I wouldn't say that the Irish contribution to Canada was insignificant. At the time though you must remember most of them were Catholic in a Orange Lodge dominated Province and the Irish weren't to keen on the Monarchy. They along with all the other emmigrants from Britain helped build this country into the great Nation it is to-day and we should all be thankful for it.
That's what happens when you try to steal some lucky charms.

"Irishness is not primary a question of birth or blood or language; it is the condition on being involved in the Irish situation, and usually of being mauled by it."-Conor Cruise O'Brien

The reference to the non-contribution of the Irish wasn't from anything I think but rather gleaned from a newspaper article (read the article in the Ottawa Sun) which I was referencing in another thread. The Irish had a huge contribution in the building of Canada and the U.S., however, some government departments won't recognize the obvious. I live in Ottawa and spent most of my childhood, living just blocks away from the Rideau Canal (known in the winter as the worlds largest skating rink). Over 1,000 people died in the building of this engineering marvel, mostly Irish. The person who designed the canal, Colonel John By, has been honoured... the canal itself has been registered as a UNESCO world heritage site, but apparently, those who built the canal are of no real significance.
It's always the way. Those who head these projects always get the laurels while the people who actually do the backbreaking labour are just so many [ants] bodies and really don't count. BTW. I read that the Rideau is no longer the worlds largest skating rink. Some place in Manitoba,I believe , took that title by being a kilometre longer.

The Rideau Canal is still the worlds largest skating rink. A portion of the Red River in Winnipeg, Manitoba is now the worlds longest skating rink. It is approximately 1.2 km longer than the Rideau Canal but is much narrower. Total skating area of the Rideau Canal is about 100,000 square metres larger than that of the Red River.
Upon searching the dead Leprechaun's apartment, the police didn't find a pot of gold but rather, a Santa suit that he apparently wore during a bank robbery, three days before Christmas.
Banks probably don't have to worry about being robbed by a big pink bunny rabbit in the next few weeks.
