Starting out:

First and foremost, if your just starting out you will need to complete your research (under technology) before you can really get your feet off the ground. The following is the best method to use early on.

When you begin you will start with three (3) workers. Place one worker in each building (Gold, Farm, and Lumber camp) and start doing your research and construction, but DO NOT build any guard towers or army yet. Doing this will just cause your score to increase and put you in jeopardy before you are ready to do battle with anyone. You wont need to assign any workers for some time after this (if ever) so just be patient and use your resources only to build mines, farms and lumber camps. Even with just one worker in each "building", once you have bought and trained a good amount of resource buildings you will see your hourly income start to come in pretty fast.

Once you have a comfortable "income" coming in across the board you can start thinking about getting that army going and building towers to protect your assets. The more patient you are, the bigger you will be able to build.

Other than that study the forums and ask a lot of questions. Most of us here are more than willing to help out.
