Media Bias Is Real, Finds UCLA Political Scientist

While the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal is conservative, the newspaper's news pages are liberal, even more liberal than The New York Times. The Drudge Report may have a right-wing reputation, but it leans left. Coverage by public television and radio is conservative compared to the rest of the mainstream media. Meanwhile, almost all major media outlets tilt to the left.

These are just a few of the surprising findings from a UCLA-led study, which is believed to be the first successful attempt at objectively quantifying bias in a range of media outlets and ranking them accordingly.

"I suspected that many media outlets would tilt to the left because surveys have shown that reporters tend to vote more Democrat than Republican," said Tim Groseclose, a UCLA political scientist and the study's lead author. "But I was surprised at just how pronounced the distinctions are."

"Overall, the major media outlets are quite moderate compared to members of Congress, but even so, there is a quantifiable and significant bias in that nearly all of them lean to the left," said co‑author Jeffrey Milyo, University of Missouri economist and public policy scholar.

The results appear in the latest issue of the Quarterly Journal of Economics, which will become available in mid-December.

Just as much bias as there is in your post.
Any opinion by a person is going to lean towards their beliefs.
No surprise.

Studies and statistics can be made to show anything you want them to show... you can take the same study or statistics, give them to 2 different people and they can show you 2 different conclusions...

It is all in the "Spin".

My point is there is bias on all sides of the fence and pointing at one group or another is pointless.... it is a universal thing!

my question to you would be why do YOU assume (spin) that this study was done with bias? do you know the author(s)... my "spin" is what i see reported everyday on the network news. and i happen to agree that there is a liberal bias as this report clarifies... did you read the article yet? or just react?

I have a (rhetorical) question-

Do the reporters decide what gets aired or printed?

No.

That job falls to the editors. I heard that Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism once polled the news editors at several newspapers and TV networks. Close to 70% responded that they would consider themselves a conservative.

Survey research has shown that an almost overwhelming fraction of journalists are liberal.

- Elaine Povich (1996) reports that only seven percent of all Washington correspondents voted for George H.W. Bush in 1992, compared to 37 percent of the American public.

- Lichter, Rothman and Lichter, (1986) and Weaver and Wilhoit (1996) report similar findings for earlier elections.

- More recently, the New York Times reported that only eight percent of Washington correspondents thought George W. Bush would be a better president than John Kerry. This compares to 51% of all American voters.

- David Brooks notes that for every journalist who contributed to George W. Bush’s campaign, 93 contributed to Kerry’s.

These statistics suggest that journalists, as a group, are more liberal than almost any congressional district in the country.

- In the Ninth California district, which includes Berkeley (possibly the most liberal voting district in the US), 12% voted for Bush in 1992, nearly double the rate of journalists.

- In the Eighth Massachusetts district, which includes Cambridge (another liberal bastion), 19% voted for Bush, approximately triple the rate of journalists.

John Lott and Kevin Hassett (2004) proposed an innovative test for media bias. They record whether the headlines of various economic news stories are positive or negative. For instance, on the day that the Commerce Department reports that GDP grows by a large degree, a newspaper could instead report “GDP Growth Less than Expected.” Lott and Hasset control for the actual economic figures reported by the Commerce Department, and they include an independent variable that indicates the political party of the president. Of the ten major newspapers that they examine, they find that nine are more likely to report a negative headline if the president is Republican.

Yale University's Institution for Social and Policy Studies has published a research paper by researchers at Stanford and the University of Chicago on the subject of media bias. To no one's great shock, they determine that on a number of important issues, most of the media is unrepresentative of everyday American political views--and yes, do conclude that most reporting comes from a position that's to the left of center. Indeed, what will most infuriate some people is that, using their tools, they concluded that both Fox News and Matt Drudge, while right of center, were closer to the American center than ABC, CBS, NBC, and so on.

After examining almost 700 press reports focusing on, but not limited to, the issues of race and homosexuality that were published in 116 different newspapers, "Press Bias and Politics: How the Media Frame Controversial Issues" by Jim A. Kuypers (Dartmouth College) documents a definite liberal political bias in mainstream news.

A liberal media bias is present in the "news" as delivered to the average US home. Study after study proves it, whether you like to admit it or not. Whether it's the reporters or the editors that finalize what's packaged and delivered, the result is a liberal bias.

Yeah...like Judith Miller is such a flaming wild-eyed Liberal!
The fourth estate has degenerated into nothing more than a tame dutiful corporate-controlled stenography pool for the White House, where anything even remotely like the Pentagon Papers is now completely impossible! As Thoreau once observed, every day it's simply the same shallow salacious mix of meaningless murders, fires and ship sinkings, only the dates and locations change.

What a preposterous load of unaduterated censored.gif!

I read the article before it was posted here!

Can you say 100% that there was not bias or spin ???

NO!

So it is opinion and only opinion.
