Just dropping in to say I got my teeshirt and CD in the mail yesterday. I like the Wild Thyme CD, especially the instrumentals. This was a fun contest and I've increased the size of my personal video collection by a little over 20GB. I now have a little over 100GB of videos and I'm considering getting an external 1 terabyte HD so I don't have to worry about storage. unsure.gif

Thanks to all for introducing me to so much new music.

Just checking to see if the current tally on the results page is the final tally. If so, how do we claim our prizes?

I'm bayouwhistler at VideoCelt. I would like to request the following corrections:

The video with the following artist:
AltanEmmylou Harris & The Chieftains
Should be:
Emmylou Harris & The Chieftains

The video with the following artist:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7zmd4rYh1o
Should be:
Fred Morrison & Bruce Molsky

I'm fairly confident I'm guilty of causing the youtube URL problem. The one with Altan is puzzling, I saw somebody was suggesting a lot of Altan so I don't remember suggesting even one Altan video. In any case, I just wanted to bring the errors to the attention of the admin. I don't know how big a hassle it is to fix it so if it's a major problem, just leave them like they are. Thanks.

I've tried the MSN and the BellSouth accelerators and they both degrade the graphics and actually slow Opera down. They do speed up loading with IE but accelerated IE is still slower than Opera un-accelerated. I haven't tried them with Firefox because I rarely use Firefox. Opera uses cashed images to speed up page loading and only download images that have changed in a reloaded page. To me, that makes more sense than degrading all the images

This is probably the most familiar song of the Confederacy:

Dixie

O, I wish I was in the land of cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

In Dixie Land where I was born in
Early on one frosty mornin'
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

Chorus:
O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!

Old Missus marry Will, the weaver,
William was a gay deceiver
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

But when he put his arm around her
He smiled as fierce as a forty pounder
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

Chorus:
O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!

His face was sharp as a butcher's cleaver
But that did not seem to grieve her
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.
Old Missus acted the foolish part
And died for a man that broke her heart
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

Chorus:
O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!

I fail to see anything offensive in these lyrics. I don't see much difference between this and such traditional Irish songs as The Blacksmith or I'll Go No More a Rovin' .

Although there are several versions of the song, the above is the most familiar. The following is a version written by Confederate General Albert Pike:

Southrons, hear your country call you,
Up, lest worse than death befall you!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Lo! all the beacon-fires are lighted,--
Let all hearts be now united!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Advance the flag of Dixie! Hurrah! Hurrah!
In Dixie's land we take our stand, and live or die for Dixie!
To arms! To arms! And conquer peace for Dixie!
To arms! To arms! And conquer peace for Dixie

Hear the Northern thunders mutter!
Northern flags in South winds flutter!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Send them back your fierce defiance!
Stamp upon the cursed alliance!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus:
Fear no danger! Shun no labor!
Lift up rifle, pike, and saber!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Shoulder pressing close to shoulder,
Let the odds make each heart bolder!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

How the South's great heart rejoices
At your cannon's ringing voices!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
For faith betrayed and pledges broken,
Wrongs inflicted, insults spoken,
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

Chorus

Strong as lions, swift as eagles,
Back to their kennels hunt these beagles!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!
Cut the unequal bonds asunder!
Let them hence each other plunder!
To arms! To arms! To arms, in Dixie!

There are more choruses but they are all in the same vein. This is certainly a call to arms but there is no glorification of slavery or even states rights. Political correctness has run amuck in this country to the point where people are offended for no reason. If it's not even acceptable to wish someone Merry Christmas, Dixie doesn't stand a chance.

QUOTE (Black Mage @ 29-Nov-2005, 08:44 PM)
Forgive me if this has already been posted elsewhere (I'm new to the forums), but are there any ITM (Irish Traditional Music (celtic)) musicians about?

I started playing the tin whistle this past June, and I love it.  So far I have four whistles: a Clarke Original D, Clarke Original C, Dixon low D, and a Clare D.

Does anyone else play anything?

Being a Cajun, I don't know if it's possible to categorize anything I play as "traditional Irish" but I have been playing whistles for a couple of years. I started with a C and D Clarke Sweetone and then I made a low D whistle out of PVC pipe. ( it took 3 tries to get one in tune unsure.gif ) I almost gave up on low whistles because I didn't have enough wind left in me to play that low D. I bought a Susato low G (non-tunable) and now it's one of my favorites. I also have A, B, C, D, E and G Susato (tunable) but the high G is too small to play. The plastic whistles don't have the best tone but they're rock solid in tune. I have a Clare D and a Waltons C, both in brass that have a sweet tone but the Clare D is a little out of tune.

I play any kind of music on the whistles, not just Irish music. I even manage to stick a whistle in traditional Cajun music, playing a slightly modified fiddle part. I have a nephew who plays Cajun accordion so I work out tunes to play with him. I also play guitar, saxophone, and clarinet.

I have learned quite a few Irish tunes using whistle mp3s and the Amazing Slow Downer, a nifty little program that slows the music without changing the pitch. It's not free but it's worth the money. The biggest problem I have learning tunes is that I can't listen fast enough and this thing helped me a lot.

I'm glad to see so many switching to alternative browsers. I'm a long time Opera user and have it configured to suit the way I surf. It can be a bit much for new users so Firefox is probably a better choice for a first alternative browser. One of the things I like best about Opera is their small market share, hardly enough users to make it worth a hacker's effort. Opera users tend to be pretty computer savvy and their forum is a great resource. Opera 9 is in beta testing and it seems to incorporate several changes to make it more like Firefox. Couple that with it being free now (no more banner ads), it may end up gaining market share. I just hope it doesn't get too popular. All the alternative browsers are better than IE though. Although all browsers can have vulnerabilities, all the alternatives are much more responsive in fixing the problems than Microsoft. There are known vulnerabilities in IE that have been known for months and still have not been patched, that's simply unacceptable.

Since they haven't been mentioned, I'll add Dervish and Planxty to the list. Planxty is no longer around but they did a reunion album not too long ago that is excellent. Dervish has been around a long time and they are outstanding. If you like fiddle music, try Natalie McMaster and nobody mentioned the Cheiftains so I'll add them too.

You should never reply to an email from PayPal or e-Gold or any other online currency account by clicking on a link. Use a good link from your favorites or type in the URL. If you use e-Gold, use their little pop-up keyboard, just in case there's a keylogger on your computer. Change your passwords often and don't use your dog's name or your birthday and certainly don't use your Social Security number. Good password have a combination of numbers and letters and should be at least eight characters long.

Finally, use an alternative browser, not IE or any browser that is based on IE, like MSN Explorer, Avante Browser or Crazy Browser. Firefox, Netscape or Opera are all free and are all more secure than IE. I personally use Opera because it has the smallest share of the browser market so it's not worth a hacker's efforts to crack it, where as, Firefox is getting too popular for my liking. Opera is now free, no more Google ads, and is the fastest of the bunch. I liked it so much, I paid for it before they made it free and I'm not upset at all about it. If you want a fast and extremely customizable browser, Opera is it. It's been my default browser for a couple of years and I only use IE for Microsoft updates.

If you have a firewall, anti-virus, Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy and you keep them up to date and use them regularly and follow the above advice, you have probably made it hard enough for a hacker that you will not be worth the hassle.

Poll Poll: Gas Prices (Pages 1 2 3 ...5 )
OBH Posted on: 19-Sep-2005, 07:16 AM

Brace yourselves for another round of price hikes. Tropical Storm Rita will be entering the gulf and increasing to hurricane status in the next day or so. CNBC is already reporting that oil and gas futures are up and likely to increase. Offshore facilities that are still working to get back on line after Katrina will be shutting in and evacuating again, as soon as Rita enters the gulf. The forecasted track puts her just off the central Texas coast by Saturday but that could change, it's already been moved a little north since yesterday. Any more northerly adjustment will put her in a location with a very high concentration of refineries, which would farther reduce refinery capacity which is still trying to recover from Katrina. If any of the big refineries between Houston and Lake Charles are taken out, there will be major shortages of gasoline and heating oil for months to come, just ahead of winter. No amount of oil from the strategic reserves can make up for reduced refinery capacity so high prices and shortages would be a certainty. If Rita strikes anywhere on the Texas coast, it will make the current problems worse so, if your gas prices are lower, you had best fill your tank now because prices will be going up again.

And they thought Raping and Pillaging was during olden times! I think we are all getting it at the pump!
Where are our oil reserves? Where is our oil from Alaska?
Has this country become so smug that we have forgotten the gas lines long ago?
What ever happened to gas wars?
A

Don't confuse crude oil supply with gasoline and other refined products. Refinery capacity in this country was at 100% before Katrina knocked 20% of the refinery capacity off line. Environmentalists and the NIMBY folks have had the result of no new refineries being built in the US for decades. Couple that with most existing refineries being located in hurricane prone areas and you have a recipee for gas shortages and prices going through the roof. Even without the loss of refinery capacity caused by Katrina, refinery capacity was being strained by a national love affair with gas guzzlers and multiple regulations calling for many different formulations of gasoline for different regions of the country. The EPA has called a temporary freeze on those regulations until refinery capacity is back up to normal, which should help some but don't expect gas prices to drop much. The decision to allow use of oil from the strategic reserve was more about politics than actual results because the crude oil shortage is a short term problem, until gulf production is back on line and LOOP is back in operation. The real problem is the refineries that were shut down by Katrina and that shortfall will continue until those refineries are back to full production. Until more refineries are built, don't expect gas prices to drop much and building a refinery takes a long time.

Poll Poll: New Oleans
OBH Posted on: 04-Sep-2005, 08:16 AM

While the idea of not rebuilding New Orleans may be popular, it's really not an option. The city is arguably the most important port in the US by virtue of it's location near the mouth of the Mississippi River. It's where the grain from the wheat belt gets transferred from barges to ships to be exported to the rest of the world.

Ever since the Louisiana Purchase, whoever controlled New Orleans, controlled the Mississippi Valley. The British knew it and, although the Battle of New Orleans took place after the War of 1812 ended, there's no way the British would have given it back if they had won the battle. The Union knew it when they took the city early in the Civil War. No city in the US is more strategically important and more vulnerable.

One little reported fact is that the Bell South building in New Orleans was in real danger of having the coolers go down last Friday. That would have shut down the switching center that controls telephone service for the entire southeastern US.

This country has for 50 years followed a foolish policy of putting all it's refining capacity in hurricane prone areas and LOOP is the entry point for most of the imported oil into this country. It will take decades to correct this situation even if it began now. That won't happen because nobody wants a big, ugly, stinky refinery in their back yard. The Henry Hub, where ALL the natural gas from the Gulf enters the US is separated from the Gulf by about 5 miles of shrinking marsh and is roughly 150 miles west of N.O. It was shut down for a day because of Katrina, mostly because most of the wells that feed it were shut down. The land wells are mostly back on line but the offshore wells may be shut in for months. Weather you use gas, oil or electricity to heat your home, you will be paying higher prices for heat this winter. The results of this poll only goes to show how little people know about south Louisiana. There is no higher ground to rebuild the city on and coastal erosion will make the problem worse much faster than we can imagine. This state is paying a very high price for supplying more than it's share of the energy this country uses.

New Orleans will be rebuilt, where it is. It may end up much smaller, which is probably a good thing. Exactly what it will look like is hard to say. If the Corp of Engineers is allowed to build the levee system they wanted to build in the first place, this kind of thing won't happen again. Compromise is a good thing in politics but not in engineering. If you need a structure to withstand a Cat 5 storm and compromise and build it to withstand a Cat 3 storm, you get the results we've been seeing all week. The few millions it would have cost to build it right pales in comparison to what it will cost to correct the mistake. When all is said and done, the nation as a whole needs New Orleans much more than the state of Louisiana does. Keep that in mind when you're gassing up your SUV.

I would also recommend Musician's Friend, I've always had fast and dependable service from them.

I would also add that you should check the bulletin boards at your local music shops. You can sometimes find really good deals with local musicians. I traded a Telecaster I never really liked for a Martin D15 a few years ago and it was the best deal I ever made and I found it on the local music shops bulletin board. I know the guy I made the trade with was also happy with the deal, I saw him playing it at a gig a few weeks ago and he told me it's his favorite guitar. Just goes to show that a buying a guitar is a very personalized experience, what one person likes may be very different from what someone else will like.

I get a weekly podcast from the Bluegrass Preservation Society through an RSS feed using Opera's newsfeed client. It's a recording of Ewell's hour long radio show but it's not the highest quality, I guess they do that to keep the file size small enough to be practical. I download the podcasts to a file on my computer and listen using Winamp, no iPod needed. Ewell doesn't have the licensing problems discussed above, he records all the music he plays himself at little concerts he puts on with mostly local bands in the Gassaway, West Virginia area. The bands get free world wide exposure and Ewell gets free content for his programs, everybody wins.

As for an iPod, I have no plans to get one. I don't like using those little ear buds, I can't enjoy music like that. If I need music for the road, I just take along some CDs.

Have we needed a mass denunciation from all Irish Catholics every time the IRA has done some violent thing?

Here's a site for you:
Bluegrass Preservation Society

The founder, Ewell Ferguson, does a radio show from Gassaway, W. Virginia that is also available as podcasts. The whole show is made up of music he records at local shows with mostly local bands. I've become a big fan because it's raw, no studio wizardry here, and the music is wonderful. The bands range from kids to old timers but the quality is remarkably good and the hour goes by really fast. He has a long list of songs on his download page that can be downloaded for like $1 each so you might take a look to see if any of it interests you. I was glad to see young bands playing that wonderful old music, that's the only way it'll survive.

"I'm sick of all these sensational trials that the news media can't seem to get enough of. I can understand Court TV following all this stuff but the main stream media is putting real news on the back burner to cover this stuff."

What do you expect them to cover; the Downing Street Memo, and the news that despite all of the White
House's denials, dissembling, and vicious ad hominem attacks, there's now
documentary evidence that Paul O'Neill, Richard Clarke and Scott Ritter were
telling the truth all along? Bush had decided upon an illegal and unprovoked attack upon Iraq the moment he took office, a peaceful diplomatic resolution was never an option, "the intelligence and facts were fixed around the policy", and that there was virtually no plan regarding what to do once the country was occupied...and we're allowing those bastards to turn our kids into kidnappers, torturers, murderers, cripples and corpses for nothing more than a LIE!

C'mon; don't you realize how just how vitally important the Jackson case is!?

God damn that despotic little martinet straight to hell, along with the whole neo-fascist junta of oligarchs that are pulling his strings!

Here's an article that puts the Downing Street memo in perspective, James S. Robbins at NRO

I don't like having to defend Bush because the only policy of his I agree with is his policy in the war on terrorism. We have technically been at war with Iraq since 1991 and Saddam broke every term of the cease fire that ended that conflict. That was the only justification Bush needed to attack him. One need only to look at a map to see the strategic importance of Iraq in a war on terror. Bush would have been derelict in his duty not to take out the a loose cannon like Saddam, who had been making threats and firing SAMs at coalition aircraft enforcing the no fly zones. By going on the attack, Bush put US forces in the center of the middle east and also put US forces on both of Iran's flanks. It also shifted the center of gravity for the terrorists who flocked to Iraq to fight the "Great Satan." We are now at the point where the terrorists are killing more Iraqis than coalition forces and Iraqi forces are gaining strength every day. These facts are slowly filtering out to other middle eastern countries who are seeing the terrorists killing more Arabs than Americans. This fact does more harm to the terrorists than all the tough fighting the US forces have done since the war on terror started. I won't try to make Bush into a military genius because I suspect it was just dumb luck that he listened to good advice from whatever military strategists came up with the plan. Despite the gloom and doom predictions, the turn over of the country to the transition government, the elections and the build up of Iraqi forces have gone off on time and the Iraqis are now doing much of the heavy lifting in fighting the "insurgency." It looks to me like there was a plan, at least in hind sight.

I had hoped that after the elections, the acrimony on both sides would settle down but, if anything, it has gotten worse. Neither side is well served by this continued fighting from the true believers on both sides. I believe the majority in this country is in the center and I, for one, am sick of it. The strength of this country has always been that we pulled together in times of conflict. The only way we can lose this one is if we defeat ourselves and I worry sometimes that we will do just that. When a hand full of bad apples puts a stink on the whole military and Amnesty International throws around terms like "gulag" it cheapens the true meaning of the word and it certainly hurts recruitment for the military in time of war. We've already defeated ourselves in one war, I hope we don't do it again.

Jackson is an obvious nut case, he proved that when he dangled his baby from that balcony with a rag over it's head. The prosecutor should have known better than to try a case with this kid's mother being an apparent scammer. If this was the best case he could make, he would have been better off waiting for a more credible accuser. I'm sick of all these sensational trials that the news media can't seem to get enough of. I can understand Court TV following all this stuff but the main stream media is putting real news on the back burner to cover this stuff. I get more real news from the bloggers than from the news media anymore. I have a couple of requests, both groups have been around for a long time but the music holds up very well.

Dervish has been around for a while and they are still together and releasing new CDs.

Planxty is an old group that is no longer together but they reunited last year and did a great live CD.

Finally, Betsy McGovern, of Irish Bayou Music, who with her band, The Poor Clares, rocked Festival International (a mostly French music festival) the year the theme was the Celtic connection. My personal favorite CD was Change of Habit but they were all good.

I don't know how advanced you are but here is a good site for beginners:
Whistle Tutor

There is another beginners tutor at The Whistle Shop, they also have a good links page and decent prices on a large selection of whistles. They also give good advice like trying a low G whistle for your first low whistle instead of jumping straight to a low D. I took that advice and I'm glad I did, it made me realize that a low G is as low a whistle as I need.

The Chiff and Piffle forum has a good links page as well.

Here's a site where you can get a free version of The Amazing Slowdowner, a nifty little program that lets you slow the tempo of a tune without affecting the pitch. It also lets you change the pitch for those groups who don't use a standard tuning. The free version has limitations, it will only play the first two cuts on a CD or will only play the first quarter of a mp3 or wav file on your computer. Some of the links above are to sites where you can download little 5 or 6 mb mp3 of tunes, download the ones you want. What I do is convert to a wav file, open sound recorder and load the wav file then insert the file at the end of the original file 3 times. Then ASD plays the whole thing and you can loop it so it plays over and over at whatever tempo and pitch you like. Works great for me since my music reading skills are rusted solid, lol.

I hope some of this helps, I love whistles, it's the easiest instrument I ever learned. You learn one scale then just change whistles to change key, like a harmonica, how cool is that. It's also very addicting and expensive, especially if you start buying high end whistles.
