SCShamrock, I do agree that spreading the wealth is a Socialist concept. I just don't think he's an out and out Socialist. Wanting to bring the extremes of the classes closer together is a great thing, in my mind. That doesn't mean I would see everyone with the same income. Obama wanting to eliminate the poorest of the poor in his country is a noble act, but I don't see that snowballing to the extent where he'll shutter all private business or abolish land ownership.

Why do you think the creation and restructuring of social programmes will lead to Marxism? You really don't think that's a very extreme leap? Would you assume a person who loves to drive a car will later insist that bikes be banned from the road? A solar system with three planets has recently been discovered. Are we to expect an invasion soon because the system is comparable to ours and may harbour life? No, I'd hope not. These are cases of taking one idea that CAN

relate to something, and concluding that it is in fact the extreme, no matter the likelihood.

(Sorry about the double post. I hit tab by mistake.)

I think I'd like to go back to have a look at the original context of his remark, which I confess I don't know anything about, and see how much the remark seems to generalize to a blanket policy or ideology statement.

Thanks oldraven, I truly appreciate the answer. You're right, it is a socialist policy. You're right too that eliminating the poorest of the poor is a noble act (depending upon the method). I would argue, however, that doing so by taking from the wealthy and then dispensing even more in the form of entitlements through the government is wrong. I think the private sector could far outperform anything the gov't does.

And yes, calling Obama a Marxist over one or two policies is a stretch. That's fine, I'll accept that. But it seems to have worked for the Democrats for the last eight years; calling Bush an idiot. And of late; calling Palin an idiot.

Antwn, thanks for your reply. Brilliant as usual. thumbs_up.gif

The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

SCShamrock;

I believe that every person on this planet should be entitled to certain basic things
besides that which is in every Charter of Rights. Those are a roof over their head, food in their stomach, clothes on their back, free medical attention, and free education even higher education if they qualify. I also believe that a person should have the right to own property, advance on their merit, and have a decent salary. I believe that Governments are there to help the people but not just give handouts. In the province I live in the government instituted "Work Fare" in place of "Well fare" which I personally think is a good idea. I also believe that everyone should pay their fare share of taxes especially the rich and large corporations. There is nothing wrong with a bit of Socialism it is only when it is taken to the extreme that it becomes tyrannical. Marxs' philosophy was corrupted by radicals and transformed into a most heinous form of government. He sought Utopia but spawned Bolshevism.

Let me ask this...

Just what is a Christian? There are unpteen hundred denominations that call then selves christian...

I was raised catholic ( have not been for more years then I want to state) ...

... all christian religions evloved or "protested the teachings" of this begining religion...

....even Islam holds many of the same teachings (they sure share some of the same " biblical stories " )...

So what is the definition of christian?

I thought it was a way of life that tolerated man's short comings in favor of your god's forgiving nature and acceptence of good over evil...

So why all this retoric of who is right or wrong, your heart will tell you.

I am sure there are many here that have "spilled your seed upon the ground" that take issue with abortion...

QUOTE (SCShamrock @ 12-Nov-2008, 02:53 PM)
Personally I don't believe he's being turned into anything. I think he is what he has always been...an ultra liberal, liar, socialist, and malcontent. He is not being judged on what he's done (that is something that doesn't exist) but rather on his words which, if you have paid any attention, are many. He has asserted a vision of America that screams socialism, and that in statements that stretch back over a decade. So, while you may want the US to turn into Socialist States of Amerika, we who criticize Obama for his stance do not. I'm still asking the question, and if you or anyone else will answer I would be grateful. Just like Barbara West in her question to Biden:

Care to respond?

HEAR HEAR!! It could not be put better! I waited till he proved what I suspected to speak against him.
