Well, next May my wife and I will be moving to the Raleigh area of North Carolina. My daughters mom informed me today that Raleigh is the area that she's looking at.

What I'd like to know from NC residents, is this:

Is Raleigh a good city to live in?

What surrounding towns might be nice (within an hour or two)?

Thanks in advance, and if you have any other information that might be of help, please do post.

Hi Brian,
I haven't been to Raliegh, but my Grandmother lived in Hendersonville, so I have been there, Asheville, and several areas around there. Also to the Charleston area. I've always liked NC. It is a pretty state and in my limited experience, people are friendlier there than in some other parts of the country.

I live in Waynesville NC (just west of Asheville) and my wife and I would be happy to buy you dinner if you moved here, but you are thinking about down east so we can't help ya tongue.gif actually I lived there in Fayetteville for 5 years and "be prepared to keep the air conditioner running" and if you don't like pine trees you are out of luck in the spiring and summer when the pollen falls all over your vehicle. There are some pretty nice things about Raleigh though.

Brian

Raleigh area is one of the top rated areas in the country for "places to live". Lot of economic growth in tech sector. Other areas strong. Real estate high in close, more reasonable farther out. Don't have time for specifics now (wife is demanding computer sad.gif ). If you want to ask particular questions or have areas of more interest, let me know (you can PM me if you want). I'll get back to you, but it may be Monday before I have time to really answer anything. Dfilpus lives in Chapel Hill (30 minutes from Raleigh), SusieQ76 lives in Durham (short drive from Raleigh), I'm about 35 miles south of Raleigh.

Sorry, Brian. I can't be of little help. I live in the New Bern area, which is further east, and I don't get to Raleigh that often.

Haven't been there, but work with a lot of people from the area, and for the most part they're good folk. Only time I've heard them talk of moving is when their job is going to another state.

every state, every city has it's good and bad points. MY wife and I live in Dallas , N.C.
just outside of Charlotte, We prefer the quite of this small town you will be near a lot of things since the highways stretch in all directions from there. It does get warm here and does snow from time to time.
But welcome to the state being from the north my self I like it here a lot to see

I'd recommend Chapel Hill, if you like college towns and can afford it. beer_mug.gif

One of the suburbs of Raleigh is Cary, the Containment Area for Relocated Yankees. If you are coming from Florida, are you a Yankee?

There is a lot to say about moving to the Triangle. I'll contact you privately.

Been considering Chapel Hill, actually. My wife is an English major, and wants to persue her Masters degree, so we are definately looking for a good school close by.

I'm not sure if Floridian's are Yankees, but I'm originalyy from CT, so I certainly am. smile.gif

Looking forward to more insight. Thanks so much.
