With Halloween just around the corner, there are so many horror movies making the rounds. Which are your favorites? Do you like the gorey or suspense? Do you like the modern or the old classics?

Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair.

In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.
John Muir
"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves."
The only kind I ever seem to be drawn too are vampiers and Werewolves (Lycnans). I have some, Underworld 1&2 Interview With a Vampier. I don't care for gorey movies I don't like to see blood that way, would rather watch ones that make you jump. The Ninth Gate is pretty good.

Hopes are towers in the skies Dreams are wings taking flight
The Boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best Shadowy and vague. Who shall say where one ends and the other begins
The Exorcist - I have only just had the nerve to watch 3-4 yrs. ago Interview with a Vampire (really not that scary). Don't like gore, like in Saw I, II, III etc. etc. etc.) never watched those, never will. The Stand (Stephen King) was well put together for a mini-series movie (I read the uncut version....verra thick book).
Growing up in the sities and seventies I go more for the old Universal studio monsters and some of the Hammer films. I must have built the Aurora models of them hundreds of times and they still sit on my shelf to this day. I plan on ordering a model of the invisible man next. Never did care much for the gore flicks of the 80's to now. I always believed suspense rather than gore always makes a better horror movie.
I think that last "great" horror flick I saw was American Werewolf in London. Haven't seen one as good since although Army of Darkness is also one of my favorites. Great combination of horror and comedy. And of course Bruce Cambell is a fellow member of the International Brotherhood of Rogue, Scoundrels and Cads so I gotta give him some shout outs once in a while.
Bela Lugosi as Dracula is still my favorite. Second best racula was the guy who played him in Monster Squad. No romance issues with that version of Dracula.
They are also doing a remake of the Wolfman and a authorized sequal to Dracula. Hope it leads to a good revival of the greats of horror.

Unavoidably Detained by the World
"Irishness is not primary a question of birth or blood or language; it is the condition on being involved in the Irish situation, and usually of being mauled by it."-Conor Cruise O'Brien
I don't like horror movies! Why that? Maybe I'm a freak, but I rather read a good horror book. When I read this, I can image the situations in this book with my own "pictures"... I think a good horror book stands out due to the horror "between the lines". I can image, that's really difficult to translate (I hope, that's the right word) this into a movie but almost all horror movies I seen were too bloody for me and show moments of shock only.
My absolutely favorite in this matter is Stephen King (who else ). In many of his books the horror isn't in the spotlight, but it is always present - even between the lines. (tommyknockers, needful things, deadzone, pet sematary etc). Unfortunately are the most movies, which based on books by Stephen King, only bloody too and you can't find this "permanent background horror", that King stages so perfect. Maybe I had "my own pictures" in my head, as I watched these movies, however often I couldn't retrieve situations from book in the movie. It' s a pity, because King writes a really good stuff.
"Vampires" "Blade" (even though it's more of an action movie) "Rosemary's Baby" "Night Of The Living Dead" "Children of the Corn" "Underworld" "28 Days Later" "Scream"

May the Irish hills caress you. May her lakes and rivers bless you. May the luck of the Irish enfold you. May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.
One of my all time favorites is from 1959, "The haunting of Hill House ", by Shirley Jackson, well, the movie was from 1959, not the book, it was scarey, but you never actually saw anything scarey, it was just ,insinuated, it was great, a groupg of people staying in the old house, it even had an old nursey upstairs, spiral staircase and everything.

I saw the remake of that with Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones and then-unknown Owen Wilson.
I think Owen Wilson's character died because the director probably couldn't stand looking at his nose any longer .

I'm with you on Night of the Living Dead and 28 days later. Resident evil 1 & 2 were ok but I am more a fan of the apocalyptic "what if" type movies. I recently saw "The Happenings" and it started well but got really weak about 45 min in. There is one called "The Road" I saw a trailer for and that looks good.
"1408" (I thinks it was a Stephan King book) really scared me. Not gory just disturbing.

... that's fine. Now we are already two... The best of this stuff I ever seen are two (alowedly quite old) movies. The first - a french movie - "Malevil" is based of the same named book by Robert Merle (the book is written in 1971) Some people survive a nuclaer strike in and around a french village. The first group survived in a wine cellar, the secound group are train passengers and they survived, because the train stopped in a tunnel. Like the wind became new structures by live together (of course absolut different in every group) and some day they meet.... I found in the deep of internet a chance to download this movie (English spoken version) as torrent. ---> click here The secound movie is an American movie named "Fatherland" (in German: "Vaterland") Im sure, that someone of you know this...
There are many horror films on tv now. What are you watching? I still enjoy the old vampire movies (1930's). I found out on wikipedia (I know you have to watch what is on there) that the first vampire movie was a silent film. Check out the list of films: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire_films
For a lighter note you can't beat Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein or The Ghost and Mr. Chicken with Don Knotts.
I thought I would bump this back up to see if anything new is going on. I watched Nicole Kidman in "The Others" and Leonardo DiCaprio in "Shutter Island." I don't do gore!
This year seems filled with alot of Zombie movies.
