The Saltire is the only Scottish flag... But you often see the Lion Rampant being flown as though it, too, was Scottish flag. Strictly speaking it is the Scottish Monarch's personal standard, and should traditionally only be flown when she is present...
Our flag is the saltire - and this site has details. It also details when it is appropriate to fly the Saltire. Of course, it doesn't mention such important dates as any Scotland rugby match, any Scotland football match, any Scotland... well, you get the picture
Catriona! I was very interested in this topic. I have a Saltire hung in my home. At certain Scottisn gatherings, I have seen the Lion Rampart as well. Was wondering the difference and the history of both flags. thanks!

I have never yet spoken a word of English to any of my children. They can speak as much English as they like to others, but when they talk to me they have to talk in Gaelic."

As the Queen is (still, at the present time) Queen of Canada, I suppose any province of Canada which has permission to incorporate part of her standard may do so..........
I know a little about Scottish adn English heraldry (both are distinct and quite different in many ways) - but as for overseas heraldry - I haven't a clue. I do know that Canada has its own heraldic society.
And just so no-one can misunderstand, I have no problem with foreigners flying the Lion Rampant - if they want to use the Queen's standard - good luck to them, sez I I was talking about SCOTLAND and the ettiquette of using the Queen of Scots' standard, instead of the Saltire....

Some interesting history here IMHO, if the lion is part of a specific flag for specific purposes, then noone else should use it unless in honor of that. but that's just MHO
Definately plenty of honor in these flags. keep them flying!
Thank you Old Raven! I never knew that about each provinces of Canada having a flag. The only flag I have ever seen from Canada is the Maple leaf!
MacFive! I was watching a movie just tonight about the civil war and got to really looking at the Confederate flag and I wondered if it was based on the St. Andrew's Flag. You answered my question!
When we have our Burns Supper every year here in Houston, Texas we fly both flags. The Saltire and the Lion Rampant, as we have Her Majesty's Consul General in attendance, therefore it is all proper, as he is her represenitive. At any other function the Lion Rampant is not flown because of that reason.

I am Wolf. It is my cry you hear in the night, My eyes that gaze at you from the shadows. It is my heart that beats in your Soul, My strength that makes you whole. I am Wolf. I am in you. You are in Me. We Are Wolf.
Oh, I understand completely. I'm just left wondering, what's the story with the Nova Scotia flag? Was it improper to haveplaced the lion rampant in the inverse saltire and fly it all over? Or does it matter, since it's not being flown in the UK...............And if I were to go to the UK, would I be putting people out by wearing the New Scot flag?
OR, speaking as someone who knows no etiquette or historical knowledge of the flag, I would imagine since your flag is of a completely separate country then you can fly it wherever your proud little heart desires . And, as a Scot, nothing that resembles the saltire or lion rampant is going to offend me ( or, I believe, most Scots) So go to it big boy!!
