QUOTE (Gaelic Bread @ Oct 11 2003, 09:30 PM)
That's pretty wild really. It seems like yesterday when we were gaulking at the prospects of getting member number 1000.

Computer-Celts. Could be a dangerous thing?!

Not as dangerous as techno-kilts. (Having a Wallace and Gromit moment here, could it be the Oktoberfest in the kegerator that's doing it, or hearing "Donald Where's Your Trousers" for the 8000th time today?)

And just how the devil do you pronounce Brobdingnagian without having to go to the infirmary, anyway? Every time I try, I end up hurting myself. lookaround.gif

QUOTE
What part of Maine? Spent about 5 years up there before moving to South Carolina.

I grew up in York County, went to college in The County as well as Portland. Made my home in Brunswick for a while before moving to Beantown for a better tech job. I'd be living in Maine still, if it weren't for two things: 1) the economy up there, which seems to fear high tech in every aspect 2) the tax rates, which have ballooned out of all proportion to income - much higher than MA or NH.

How did you end up in the land of vinegar BBQ? (can you tell I'm hungry?) I have other friends from Maine living in exile "down south", in VA - one's in the Navy, though, so he doesn't really have much choice wink.gif .

This came in from my dear ol' dad... further proof that my twisted sense of humor comes from his side of the family.

I'm tired. For a couple years I've been blaming it on lack of sleep, not enough
sunshine, too much pressure from my job, earwax buildup, iron poor
blood or anything else I could think of.

But now I found out the real reason:

I'm tired because I'm overworked.
Here's why: The population of this country is 273 million. 140 million are retired.
That leaves 133 million to do the work.
There are 85 million in school, which leaves 48 million to do the work.
Of this there are 29 million employed by the federal government, leaving 19 million to do the work.
2.8 million are in the armed forces preoccupied with Iraq.
Which leaves 16.2 million to do the work.
Take from the total the 14,800,000 people who work for state and city governments. And that leaves 1.4 million to do the work.
At any given time there are 188,000 people in hospitals, Leaving 1,212,000 to do the work.
Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons. That leaves just two people to do the work.
You and me.
And there you are sitting on your butt, at your computer, reading jokes. Nice, real nice..

I'm an RPG gamergurl, so I frequent the boards at kenzerco.com. Hackmaster rocks.

I also belong to a group that enjoys ranting about stupid people and video games. It's a good, friendly place to vent one's spleen. smile.gif

Other than that... ?? Anything more than that would just be misuse of time that would be better spent making more homebrew.

Currently Belmont, MA - t'other side of the river from Bahstin.
Mind you, grew up in Maine (and a few other places besides).

Area sayings:

"Tha' was a wicked pissah of a Bruins game last night!"

"Yankees S---" (I'll let you fill in the blank)

"Grady Little couldn't find his bullpen with both hands"

From up in Maine, (yay FireStormReel! smile.gif ) You get things like:

"Ayuh, Bah Hahbah is abowt 40 miles up apiece. Buht ye cahn't get theyah from heeah."

Moxie - ugh. That's a drink that rates about 18 cats warm, and 26 cats chilled (ask me about the Cat Rating System sometime. wink.gif ). Should only be taken for medicinal purposes, an' then only if you're going to die anyway. I used to use it to clean engine parts.

Also, Aroostook County is just called "The County" by locals, as if the rest of Maine doesn't exist. I have this theory that folks living up there were planted there by alien spacemen who abducted people from the deep south. After the aliens were finished their experiments, they didn't know what to do with them. So they ended up dropping them off in The County.

Catherine-Ann MacPhee! One of the best traditional Scottish singers I've ever heard.

Goat?!? Who let in a goat?! *peers suspiciously at barddas* I wunner'd what that smell was...

Speaking of goat, I'm getting hungry... will someone get this barbecue started, if I haul out my homebrew?

Mike, I feel for ya. I know all about the Black Sox curse, it's one of those anecdotes of baseball history that make this game so special. The curse of the Bambino, by comparison, is an utter hoax. I mean, Shaughnessy slaps a book together and suddenly it's "The Curse" this and that. Most of Beantown has gotten over it - unfortunately, no one has told the national media outlets. If Steve Lyons mentions the curse one more time, I swear, may have to go postal. The guy was such a phenomenal jerk calling Game 5 last night, that I finally had to turn down the sound and turn up Joe Castiglione on WEEI just to get a friendly voice.

Wish we had Sean and Remy on the TV.

Reds? ROFLMAO. They're a farm team for Seattle now, aren't they? *snort*

Mike, speaking on behalf of Red Sox Nation, we admire the spirit of the Cubbies and their fans. They're like us, only more polite! *snicker*

I'm really hoping it ends up being BoSox vs. Cubbies at the World Series. Heck, even if we lost to the Cubs, it would still be a game for the ages. Last time we saw them in a WS was when we won in 1918.

I'm confident this is the year for the BoSox though - the last time we won it all, in 1918, my great-grandmother (gods rest her) was the same age I am now. The metaphysics of baseball are powerful; and I feel like the heavens are finally coming into alignment for a Sox series win. And if not us, well... there's no other team I'd rather see have it than the Cubbies and their fans. They've suffered too.

LOL... had the paper been available online at the time, I probably would have. As it was, I needed to keep on top of the important things: my sports teams. wink.gif

When I finally did let the subscription lapse, I got all kinds of junk calls and mail about it - it let up after I moved to a new apt., so it all ended well, anyway.

Now I just screen all calls that come in - if it's someone who needs to talk to me, they have the sense to start talking into the machine, giving me an opportunity to pick up.

I did an odd thing to a telemarketer once... before the days when I could afford the whole caller-ID thing.

Poor slob calls to sell me a subscription to a newspaper I already get. I was ticked at this - second call in three days from this paper, and why don't they check their own frickin' databases?!

So I did the only thing a self-respecting looney can do in a situation like this: I interrupted the guy before he could start his schpiel, ordered a pizza from the moron, and hung up.

I'll spring for the third... beer_mug.gif beer_mug.gif beer_mug.gif seeing as how the Red Sox have made it to the ALCS!

I pointed out to a client today that it's a darn shame the Sox don't have their own tartan. They should have one. A real loud one.

Have I mentioned I haven't slept since October 1st? Augh!

Definitely Aon! Although you being in Scotland, hard to get together over a cup of coffee.

Sort of on the subject of Independence Day... the last LARP I wrote was based in the White Wolf genre, and took place in Boston during the Rev. War. I tried to challenge my gamers by getting them into more of a politically oriented game, as opposed to the constant combat they were used to - utterly lame in White Wolf, because it devolves into an endless game of rock-paper-scissors. Some thrived on it, some complained, but overall it did well. I put it on hiatus after some key players had schedule conflicts, but I'd love to start it up again.

As for pumping gas in antebellum ballgowns...preach it, sister! I've done my grocery shopping like that a couple of times. It wasn't anywhere near halloween. Folks ask me if I'm going to a wedding, it's hilarious.

Happy Independence Day everyone!

Loved the fireworks show on the site... now I don't have to suffer the crowds on the Arthur Fiedler Footbridge and at the hatch shell!

Going up to my fiance's family camp for bbq (and wow them all with my ability to bake a cake in a dutch oven!) laugh.gif No idea if they will be attending the local fireworks show, as it's a 2 mile walk. After we delve into the homebrewed beer, I have a feeling no one is going to be in a capacity to walk that far. *snicker*

Have a safe holiday!

I'm a Heathen. Which I view as distinct from say, Asatru. A-S deities, with a fair number of Celtic ones thrown in as well because I thrive on non-conformity. (My hearth goddess is Egyptian. Go figure).

Linen thread....*drool*....

Swanny, you're such a bad influence on my budget! Darn ya! wink.gif You're bookmarked for the fall sewing season. LOL

Are those wool stockings you offer hand knit? I'm curious. I knit stockings for anyone who wants them in my circle currently, because I haven't found any quality handknit repros at sutlers. I have two USCW era patterns, one Union, one Confed. I get my yarn from a place that uses mule-spinner technology to spin their yarn. Good stuff.

Aon, what LARPs? White Wolf? Nero? Or homebrewed D&D style?

I've done my share of playing in, writing, and hosting LARPs. Took a wee break after the politics of one group got too ridiculous for my liking. Wouldn't mind getting back into it with a saner group of people though.

I hear ya about walking out among the mundanes in garb. I've had a few hilarious adventures with friends at different times of the year, wearing our garb "on the road". One of the best was riding the T in Boston over to South Station. I was dressed as an Irish immigrant washer woman from the civil war. We were taking Amtrak down to an event, and there I was pushing my way through the crowds with my bandbox. To my credit, even when I got dirty looks from the buskers, I never broke character. happy.gif We got weird looks, to be sure, but it was good fun to shake folks up!

Hello the house!

I'm the Madweasel, and I've brought the homebrewed beer!

A little about me: computer programmer (to make the folks happy), costumer and U.S.C.W. reenactor. I homebrew beer and mead, garden, and play the fiddle. Family is mostly Irish and Scots, I'm told we have some connection with a sept of Clan MacFarlane, but I'm still working on the genealogy. If anyone has a clue about the families Knox or Knowles, do drop me a PM. I'm stumped!

I love Celtic music, and go to contradances and local fiddle events whenever I can. If I were to describe my personality...I'd have to say "outgoing, outspoken, and Out To Lunch". In a good way, though.

Glad to have found this radio station, and your good selves! Looks like a nice little community here. Thanks for welcoming me into it.

ROFL. Swanny, you're a peach. If those quips aren't on bumperstickers, they should be!

I have another one for you (this one is a bumpersticker):

Vegetarian: primitive word for lousy hunter.

I had this sticker on a vehicle I once drove around Boston... I used to get honked at angrily by vegan college students. My argument: plants scream too, they're just quieter. A scientist actually proved plants respond to pain, so the vegans are no better. tongue.gif

For the record, bbq sauce would completely ruin the delicate flavors of a moose steak. That's like ordering a gourmet meal of french cuisine and then asking for the brown sauce. Go for the simple: a little salt, a few snips of garlic chives from the garden, a little pepper. And a nice pint of homebrew to wash it all down with.

I'm like Swanny and Free2B... My closet is, for the majority, living in the 19th century. U.S. Civil War reenactor here. (BTW, looking snazzy there Swanny!) There are times I wish I was a guy - it's easier to explain wool pants and button-on braces in the wintertime, than it is to explain the corset and the stripey flannel petticoat!

A couple of years ago I gained some weight, the result of being cooped up for two months following knee surgery. Nothing to do but eat, work at the computer and no vigorous exercise will tend to do that. rolleyes.gif Anyway, I'm *still* trying to lose the weight. Meantime, I'm at an odd size. Borderline "regular" and "plus" size. To make matters worse, the Gap stopped making the jeans I used to wear. I bought the same style, the No. 9s for close to 10 years. I have always hated shopping for jeans, so when I finally found a size/style that worked, I would always buy that. Recently my denim purgatory was lifted, and I managed to find a good fit. Ironically I got them at LLBean; I almost never shop catalogue (unless it's for computer stuff).

Since I'm self-employed (computer programmer) and do most of my work from my home office, I tend to dress like a slob most days. Jeans and T-shirts are my usual attire, except when I go to a client's site.

Ghah! Too many of my favorites up there to make a choice...

One I'd like to see around on the playlist but haven't though, is Catherine-Ann MacPhee. Anyone else ever heard of her? She put out 3 albums that I know of (and own), between 1987 and 1994 - I'm still looking to find out if she did any more. Great voice, all her albums are in the Scots Gaelic, which for some reason seems hard to find generally.

The albums, in no particular order:

Cànan Nan Gàidheal (The Language of the Gael)
Chi Mi'n Geamhradh (I see Winter)
Catherine-Ann MacPhee sings Mairi Mhor

Chime in if you have a clue what I'm talking about. blink.gif
