On this day 9 April 1917, 92 years ago the Canadian Corps' 4 Divisions fighting as one coherent unit for the first time stormed the heights of Vimy Ridge in North Eastern France and after a three day battle against the entrenched Germans did what the French and the British before them could not do. They captured the ridge that had been in German hands since the beginning of the war. At a cost of over 10,000 casulties over 3,000 dead Canada proved to the world that we had every right to our NationHood and we were not a colony of Britain. We did on that day become a Nation unto ourselves. I join with all my fellow Veterans here in Canada in Remembering that cold snowy Easter Monday when "Byngs' Boys" did the job.

All Honour to the Fallen
Lest we Forget.

Thank you for posting Vimy Ridge Day thumbs_up.gif It is very important to honour these men & women...as a matter of fact, my old High School had been renamed Vimy Ridge High in honour of those who fought for our freedom. Thank you Camac smile.gif

Good on you to keep the memory alive Camac, and so right you are that it was a defining moment for our nation. Being a musician I composed a piece about 2 years ago called Vimy, the piece,written for black flute and percussion was used as a musical intro in a small stage play that toured a bit last year. The play essentially a series of letters home read by the actors.

Blackdog;

Glad to hear that you wrote a musical piece on Vimy. April 9th through April 12th 1917 was a great time in Canadian History . It was also a dark time as it was the Bloodiest 3 days for our Military over 10,000 Casualties including 3,598 Dead. I personally think it is very important that we never forget the sacrifices our people have made.

Thank you for reminding us of this important event in our history Camac and honor those that give away the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom...their lives for us to enjoy it today.

iolanda,

Canada is "the" most beautiful place in the world to live indeed as we are a free nation and though a lot complain about this and that...we are free.
And that's what makes this country so unique and the envy of the world.

I wish for you that someday you will come and visit us.

LOA;

This is who we are. We are not boastful, prideful or arrogant. We do not thump our chest and scream to the world how great we are. We do not conquer nor wage aggressive war. We are the quiet faithful friend and ally to all who would be our friend and ally. We do not look for trouble but when this old world gets in trouble we are there to help. We keep the peace and when the need arises we help make the peace. We are, simply put, Canadians, les Canadiens, the Canucks.

I was able to travel amongst thousands of Canadian students to Vimy Ridge for the re-dedication of the memorial in 2007 by the Queen with my High School History department and it is impossible to describe the sense of pride and patriotism that overwhelms you in that situation. I've always been interested in the First and Second World Wars and to experience something as powerful as being there for that historic event is just incredible. It was the first time I'd ever felt that kind of pride, and to know you're amongst thousands of Canadians there for the same purpose was just so humbling.

I consider it an honor to be able to stand there on the same ground as the soldiers once did. I also consider it to be an honor to just drive along the roads and streets of France...the exact places that were a muddy and blood filled battlefield.
