Wilson, my last name, is a sept of both clan Gunn and clan Innes. Does anyone know how to find out which clan I'm affiliated with? Do I need to delve deeply into my family history? Can I just choose one?
If you want to be totally correct, you need to find out where in Scotland your family came from. That can be an intimidating task. If however, you're satisfied just to celebrate your Scottish heritage in general, then pick one and don't worry about it.
When you go to Scottish festivals, you will meet some folks who insist on documented blood lines, others who accept "fuzzy" heritage and everyone in between. Be as exact as you want to be. Be prepared to be snubbed by some of the "correct" folks, but remember, as a friend of mine observed, 90% of geneology assumes all spouses were faithful and all births legitimate. The "correct" folks may have a surprise in their closet.

Why choose? Join both of them (if they'll have you). I know my Clarks are claimed by a couple different Clans (and it's rumored those evil Campbells will accept MacEwens into their Clan).

Thanks for the info guys. I'm trying to get my Dad to get in touch with a cousin who has some information that might be helpful. Just waiting to see, I guess.

Hi Brian,
Wilson is a common name in Scotand, almost as common as Brown. If you're a Scot, then it is usually associated with the clans you mentioned, Gunn or Innes. To read more about clan Gunn, try this:
I'm proud to be of the clan Gunn. I was born a Robison.
Hello friend,
Robison is a name found in two areas in Scotland. If your ancestors were from the Highlands (especially the Caithness area) then Clan Gunn is your best bet. Robison (som of Rob) is also found in the Border areas as one of the famous/infanous reiving clans of the Borders.
Realm: Sweden, but me heart's in Scotland - An t-Suain, ach tha mo chridhe às ann Alba
Halò a h-uile duine! Hey ya! My grandparents parents moved te Sweden a long time ago, and they were members of the Gunn clan. Then my grandpa married a lass named Ögren, but still considered himself a Gunn, and he thinks it's fun that I love Scotland, Would you say I can call me self a Gunn, or not??? Grandpa says I'm a Gunn, but since it's not me last name (Sandberg - but I hate this name due to my father's family from where it come, and will change it as soon as possible - and in Sweden you are allowed to take a surname that has a connection to your family) I don't know.
If you think you can hold me down I beg to differ If you think you can twist my words I'll sing forever
Tha gach uile dhuine air a bhreth saor agus co-ionnan ann an urram 's ann an còirichean. Tha iad air am breth le reusan is le cogais agus mar sin bu chòir dhaibh a bhith beò nam measg fhein ann an spiorad bràthaireil

QUOTE
many clansmen do not bear the surname of Gunn. Surnames were not commonly used until comparatively recent times. They would have been of little use where everyone was of the same clan.
It may be of interest that the chief line (which is now considered dormant) is likely of Norse descent through the Jarls of Orkney, while most other members of the clan are likely of Pictish descent.
My surname is Wilson and my grandparents were very proud to be Scottish. We had our own kilts, bagpipes and books on family history and the clans. My grandfather pointed out that we were definitely Gunn. I always consider myself as a Gunn, although it is not a blaring pride. I feel more patriotism toward Wales. My father has since sold all our family heirlooms since my grandfather died and he inherited them. My mother was outraged, although not Scottish, she has very proud of her children's heritage. Therefore, I would be most grateful to be kept updated on any progress with searching Wilson/Gunn history.
