Had steak, baked potato with butter and sour cream, green salad and a fine IPA.
I haven't changed anything in my life, food or habits.

Well it sure is alot harder to eat healthy when you are trying to cut back on the grocery bill. Fresh fruit and vegetables are way more expensive the processed food. We are lucky to live in an agricultural area so we have many roadside vegetable stands. Since it has been cool, I fix soup more often then add biscuits or cornbread.

I think I am going to send the husband fishing more!!!!!

Well -- I discovered something that may interest anyone watching their pennies who likes to eat flavorfully. I use a peanut butter that is very low in sugar (so called "natural", not much in it but peanuts), and since I have made peanut sauce indonesian style, I tried to imitate it in a way with a plain peanut butter sandwich: bit of minced garlic, ginger and scallion, some satay spice mix, and a few drops of soy sauce mixed with a couple tablespoons of peanut butter. Plain bread seemed too weird with this, so I spread this on wedges of pan-toasted pita. It was GOOD!
(I get my spices and blends from Penzey's. They are wonderful, and in larger packages they are very reasonable in price if you care for them and keep them cold and dry, so the flavor lasts. Penzey's satay blend: coarse flake salt, brown sugar, garlic, white onion, coriander, purple shallots, ginger, turmeric, sweet paprika, Ancho pepper, galangal, cayenne red pepper, lemon grass.)

We are eating more soups, beans w/fried potatos and cornbread, and also more hamburger. The fresh fruits and vegetables have skyrocketed in price here so we have cut back on them.
I also told hubby that we needed to get back into fishing again. We had gotten away from it for some reason.
I am also going to move the flowers out of one of the flower beds and plant it in all vegetables this year.

I'm lucky that my son in-law is the great white hunter as I like to call him. He is giving me a lot of venison which I like and makes my daughter very happy because she doesn't. And we have been talking about takeing some of their yard for a garden, and I think the grandkids will enjoy that (little weed pickers).

We purchased a $17 crock pot at Walmart and have begun making stews. Actually they are really good and very inexpensive to make. Some of the less expensive meats taste a whole lot better cooked all day in vegetables.

Also, no more buying lunches - making lunches which are a whole lot healthier.

My Father and Uncle use to hunt deer back in the 30's. Not for sport, but for food. A couple of deer would feed the family for the winter. My dad couldn't kick the habit though, I remember him back in the 70's cooking pan fried venison on the stove!

I told my brother if things get bad we are going to become hunters and do the same!

One is fortunate if one lives in an area where hunting is possible. In urban areas, the opportunities are limited. However squirrels and rabbits are to be found nearly everywhere. Live traps are easy to use and allow the user to release animals not in their food chain. If I have learned anything of importance in my travels, it is that in many countries, any source of protein is edible. They do not seem to be harmed because of it.

The cheapest source of protein today would be beans and rice. Black beans are best. Combined in a meal they form a complete protein.

I recall the stories told by my grandfather of the Scots of long ago. I would like to know their dietary habits.

I like to make soup; although mine is closer to stew. I put in a little hamburger that has been browned, some onions, canned tomatos and then whatever vegatables we have on hand. Fill up the 8 quart stew poy and let it go all afternoon. Oh yeah, salt, pepper, garlic salt. and red pepper.

I am cooking a lot of leftovers. I also have been cooking a lot of chillies, stews, soups. Can't live without a crockpot. It's one thing that tenderizes any game meat. thumbs_up.gif I have been eating a lot of canned fruits and vegs. can't afford the fresh. Great topic Shadows.

I was checking my freezer and found some Buffalo roasts that I forgot about. My crock pot didn't work right so I replaced it. I will probably use that a lot now. It is much better than the microwave. I like smoked ham hocks and pinto beans which are great cooked in a crock pot. Hamburger roast is another good one.

I see alot of individuals use crockpots but does anyone use a pressure cooker? They really do tenderize less expensive cuts of meat and cuts your cooking time immensely. After soaking dry beans overnight you can have them done in 20 minutes. Fresh vegetables usually take 10 depending on vegetable.

Most pressure cookers are aluminium and I stay away from aluminium cookware for personal reasons. I have used pressure cookers in the past and you are right, just not my style right now.

I bought my daughter a stainless pressure pan. She has a life time to use it and young children. I quit using my two aluminum ones but probably any health effects in the next 10 or 15 years would be minimal if I started using them again.

I have nothing against anyone who uses aluminium cookware, I personaly don't like the after taste it leaves.

Then there are the health issues...

Use what ever you prefer, aluminium is not on my top 6 choices.
