Well, it looks like Florida is going to get hit with a couple big storms. Bonnie is headed towards the pan-handle as a tropical storm, and Charley was JUST upgraded to a Hurricane, and is headed toward the Tampa Bay area (that's where I live).

So, for those that live in Florida, be prepared, and be safe!

Yep. I hope you and your family will be okay, Brian.

I live in eastern North Carolina, and it looks like Charley will give us our second hit of the season after he gets through with Florida. But, at least he's supposed to be a tropical storm for us. Then again, that's what they said about Alex, so, we'll see!

Stay safe, Brian.

Yep, looks like the "wind gods" are out to get us this year. Three storms and three hits so far. Fortunately no biggies yet. Don't need any more Frans or Andrews.

ImmortalAvalon, I'm just east of Sanford, NC, dfilpus is in Chapel Hill and FreeKenny has a house at the beach in NC. We ought to all get together sometime. Wonder how many more of us are in the "Old North State"?

A North Carolina meet would be good fun. Anybody have a location in mind?

Meanwhile, we're looking for lots of rain from Bonnie (Prince) Charlie. Bonnie hit southern NC the last time around.

That sounds like fun! I live a bit northwest of New Bern.

Oh, how I remember. That one wasn't very strong, but it was SLOW!!!! Went through at about 2 mph or something.

And we certainly don't need another Fran, Isabel, or, horror of horrors, Floyd!

Aww shucks, dfilpus, you beat me to the Bonnie (Prince) Charlie joke! I caught that the first time I saw it on the news and wondered if I was the only one to make that connection! Great mins think alike, I guess! smile.gif

Well..it looks like Charley is headed right toward Tampa Bay, where I live. They still haven't evacuated are particular area, but we are close to the water (3 blocks). They are predicting 14' storm surges in Tampa Bay. We're going to be moving our vehicle to a parking garage across the street real soon.

I work for the Hilton hotel, which is just two blocks away, so I'm hoping if any flooding occurs (we're in a first floor apt.) we can get over to the hotel and hopefully get a room. The winds are supposed to start around 10am, tropical force winds will arrive by 2pm, and hurricane force winds will be here by 5pm.

Wish me luck!

I wish you more than luck, my friend, I pray God will protect and watch over you and yours and came you safe from harm!

Posted by: ImmortalAvalon 13-Aug-2004, 07:47 AM
Sending you lots of good luck, Brian, and lots of sympathy.

I've friends that just moved down to the tampa area, and they are already getting their first taste of the weather, I wonder if that'll send 'em back to Alabama... probably not. My parents have a condo out on Edisto Island, but I think that's South Carolinia otherwise I'd say we could all head there for the meet 'n' greet.

Also, have to say I like the weather this week. Not often that I wear long sleeves in August in Alabama.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the path of this storm. Florida could be hit very hard and areas further north could receive major flooding. I hope everyone stays safe and that no one takes any chances.

I'd like to add my thoughts and prayers. You all take good care and stay safe!

Don't forget about those of us that live on Georgia's coast. I have my boat out of the water and secured. Have all of my coolers full of ice and precooked food stored. Have my two gas cylinders filled so I can cook for the family and neighbors when the electricty is out. We will not get hammered like our Florida neighbors but we are expecting heavy weather after midnight tonight with winds increasing to 45 knots or better with gust up to 65 knots. This will change as the storm changes directions. Keep all of us in your prayers.

Well Charley has come and gone and I am still here (Thank God!!!)scared.gif . My house and I have survived (That's my house 2, Hurricanes 0, Donna and now Charlie). Have less foliage than I had before lookaround.gif . Currently have no power and don't know when it will come back. Appear to have lost a couple shingles off the roof. The Eye of the hurricane passed within 20 miles of me. It was fun. dribble.gif

I am happy to here that you, and your house, are alright. Unfortunately, however, no it's my turn. What is it with hurricanes and North Carolina? I mean no offense, but what's wrong with them going to Georgia or Massachusetts occassionally?

::sigh::

Anyway, the meterology guys are saying that this one will be similiar to Bertha of '96, which means I probably won't have any power either by the time the day is over.

My sympathy and best wishes to all of you Floridians, if there are any people who truely understand, it's us North Carolinians.

My daughter and her fiance` live in Saint Petersburg, they were evacuated and went to Orlando ( big mistake there ). They survived but the neighborhood they evacuated to has much damage... should have stayed in St. Pete!!! Now they get to go home and see if there was any damage there.

Posted by: Avonlea22 14-Aug-2004, 08:19 AM
My wife and I live in St. Pete. We certainly lucked out. Although I must admit...I was kinda hoping it would hit here. I like hurricanes. Ok..maybe not a cat. 4, but I've experienced a few in my time, and I just think it's awesome how strong Mother Nature can be.

Thanks to all for thier well wishes and prayers. I guess they worked. smile.gif

I'll be thinking of all those that are now in the path of Charley. Stay safe!!

I know parts of Florida were devestated; I hope everyone from this forum is safe and sound. Just heard there have been at least 15 deaths in Florida. Not good. Think the storm is hitting ImmortalAvalon as I type this; hope she and her family are OK. Look out Norfolk and Tidewater area. Keeping all in my thoughts and prayers.

MacE and Brian, glad to hear ya'll made it OK. smile.gif

Thanks! beer.gif

Apparently there is another storm in the works. As of right now, it's on the same path as Charley was. It's Tropical depression #5. It may be named Hurricane Earl later today. We'll have to keep a close eye on that one. And we just finished putting everything back that we took off the floor yesterday, in case it flooded. grrr.

Posted by: ImmortalAvalon 14-Aug-2004, 02:54 PM
Thank you very much, TheCarolinaScotsman. Everyone here is fine, though it got kind of hairy there for a little bit. I know of at least 2 confirmed tornadoes, and several more indicated by Dopplar radar (we had a rather close call with one of those!).

By the time Charley came through here it had been downgraded to a Tropical Storm, but, somehow, I think someone forgot to tell that to Charley wink.gif .

And now, of course, we have Danielle and Earl to deal with. ::sigh::

I am very happy to hear that you and your family are okay, Brian. biggrin.gif

TheCarolinaScotsman,

Thanks for your kind thoughts.

Still no power here, though Condos across the street have power and small commerce park one block away also has power (they must be better customers than my neighborhood!). Telephones worked all through the storm and then went out yesterday and didn't start working again until about 1 hour ago. Currently have Internet access via my laptop, though I'm on last battery.

Punta Gorda (City just north of me less than 20 miles) and north end of Pine Island (also less than 20 miles away) totally devastated. Both took a direct hit by the Eye of the storm. Looked like it was going to make direct hit on Fort Myers and Cape Coral, but jogged north at last moment. The islands of Sanibel and Captiva also have serious damage as well as Fort Myers Beach. So far 13 confirmed dead in Punta Gorda Area, expect more as they sort through wreckage.

So you are saying my daughter has hope that her car and home are safe?!?

I hope so!! She only lived a few blocks from the beach.

Oh yeah. We barely had a breeze here, and very little rain.

We live close to The Pier. We were starting to get real worried ourselves. As the crow flies, we are about 3 or 4 blocks from the water.
