Well, it might not work for everyone, but it does make for an interesting topic of conversation at parties. You are approaching this from the wrong angle - what you do is start with your own history and see if your history crosses paths with another's history. :p

Now whether or not my friend and I are actually related can only be proven through a DNA test, as I have very scanty information regarding my particular pedigree.

In my part of the country we are all related to one another whether we admit it or not. I have also read that Scotland's first "Scots" were actually from Ireland, and they came and outsted the Picts. If we get right down to it, we are all descendants of Adam and Eve. ;)

I watched one of those Discovery Channel shows about the Neaderthals, and they recreated an actual cave-family from the ancient remains and hypethesis of scientists about who and what the Neanderthals were all about. Then they did a DNA project and actually located the caveman's possible ancestor, who turned out to be a man living just a short distance away in England.

I realize that there is much honor in having Scottish blood flowing through our viens, however, I am not so arrogant to preclude others of their Scottish heritage simply because their Scottish blood is somewhat more diluted than my own.
:)

While it's not my direct history My Great Uncle (My Scottish G-G-Grandfathers son. his wife can trace her history back to a William Whipple who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and also to a Abraham Whipple. My cousin said he was an Admiral in the US Navy but my mom and dad say he was the first US Secretary of the Navy. But that is her families history I am indirectly related via marriage only. But I guess after having heard about allot of this growing up of there 2 gentleman I guess that's why I get so upset with the US Government at points. My latest tift is the tax system but won't cover that here but I guess I indirectly get some high spirited rebellious nature through them indirectly.  :p

Here is a website that tells all about my Highlander kinfolk.

Please note, the little character on the left of that web page is the spitting image of my Uncle Joe! :D

Wow! This looks like an interesting topic! But I guess that is what makes family history so interesting. I'll throw my two cents in:

My ancestor came from Scotland in 1770, he was actually headed for North Carolina, but was ship wrecked off the coast of Prince Edward Island during a terrible storm in October 1770. The name of the boat was the Annabella and was Captained by a Campbell, who just so happen to be a close and personal friend of George Washington! There is a monument up there in PEI that I would like to visit someday that commerates the passengers that made it through that first very very cold winter!

As far as being cousins, I understand from watching a few shows about humans, nathandarol and homo erectus (think it was the same show you were watching AKlassie) that at one point there were only 10,000 humans left. So I guess we are all related at some point.

It is funny, the more I learn about Scotland and Scotland's history, the more I come to realize that there were many groups of peoples that came together to make Scotland. The Celts, Irish, Picts, Vikings, Norweigns, French....all pooling to create the Scotland we know.

There are also a number of DNA initiates underway that I have heard of. One is particular to the Clan I belong to. Some fellow from New Zealand has a deal with a lab to have DNA tested from hair samples, then possibly exhumed an old body and compare the DNA too. Not really sure what the purpose is, other than to say...yes...I am definitely related to this person....it would seem that it is plausible that great great great great grandmom might of had an affair that was never revealed and it is possible then that the DNA passed down from the father would not be that of who they thought!

Oh well, not the stuff for me. I would rather listen to the music! :D...

:D  I wanted to open up a discussion regarding something one of my professors said long ago - Everyone in the whole world is 6th cousin to everyone else.  When I discussed genealogy issues with one of my friends, I mentioned that part of my family were Stewarts from Scotland. Well, my friend was born in Florida, and is of Cuban and Spainish background. As it turns out one of her grandfathers from Spain, had married a woman named Stewart ftom Scotland! So I guess that makes us 6th cousins!  I have had many such conversations along the way in my life, and we can often find familial connections many generations removed.

Well gave a quick look and found this so looks like 6th cousin idea is wrong. This chart goes back to 8th cousin. ???

OK was basically commenting on the fact you said EVERYBODY.  :p  But I do agree for allot it might very well work. Though will say right now am not going to get into it either but I am not religious in any way. That said I just wanted to make that clear.

But do agree that allot of folks might very well be 6th cousins and not even know it just due to generations of spread in the family trees.

As for my Scottish blood it's there though a few generations removed. My immigrant ancestor from Scotland immigrated aroung the late 1880's and not sure if his first wife (She died of typhoid around 1906) was Scottish or not. The second wife I believe was German so...But I know my direct ancester was via the first wife so she might also be Scottish though unsure at this point as he would have been roughly 15-20 years old when he immigrated so might have married an American. So unsure at this point. But I do have Scottish blood in me.  :D

Here is a little bit of information regarding Clan Taylor in Scotland:

http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/stoz/taylor2.html

It is true about the family being in the clothing business, as our American family became suit and dress tailors, dry cleaners and so forth. I am not a professional tailor, but I learned how to sew from my mother and grandmother.  :D

Well, supposedly I am related to General Winfield Scott, but we are evidently the side of the family that they don't claim!
General Scott had a daughter who ran away with my great grandfather. At least that is how the story goes. She had one child from a first marriage, a girl, and then she had four boys with my great grandfather. The parents both died in an inflluenza epidemic and the oldest sister helped to raise the boys.

That they don't claim? What are you all the black sheep of the family? The trouble makers?  :p  LOL

Just joking. Is always neat whe you find you have famous relatives. Wondering if I will ever find any famous relatives in my history (direct history that is)  :)

Well I guess it's better to be a highland sheep rather then a highland cow  :D

And while sort of just getting started have already decided doesn't make a difference who I find in my skeletons closet. Am actually surpised I could reach back (At least on my Scottish side) as far back as just prior to 1900 without having to ask much just checking dates amd such. Now the hard part is kicking myself hard in the rear end to write my Cousin (Not sure yet which number) but have her address and supposedly she can fill in more details on my Mom's fathers side of the family. Hard part is going to be my Dad's Mother as she's at least part indian and records are hard to come by. So might never get further then I have already gotten with her. My main interest anyways at least at present is my Scottish side though I know I do have Irish and English blood as well as Welsh I think but unsure of this last one.  :)

WOW! Now see there, that is the type of stuff I would love to find out about my family - the names of ships and stuff ----------but NOOOOOOOOOOO my g-g-g-grandpa had to run away from home and stoway!  It doesn't matter if your ancient Grandmother "had an affair" man!  There are worse things you could find out about your lineage than that!  It may not have been an affair - lifespans were considerabley short back then, perhaps the first husband was killed and she took a second husband? Often, the second marriage is not as well documented as the first.  ;)

Also, lets not get things further confused on this message board - there are two "lassies" - AKlassie is from Alaska. I am from Kentucky therefore I am KYlassie. If I had known that there was another "lassie" when I signed up, I would have used a different name, to avoid the confusion - however I picked a different fairie icon to help distinguish us. In all fairness she was here first, but I had no way of knowing who had signed on until after I joined up.  :D
