Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday takes it's name from the verb "to shrive" meaning to confess sins and receive absolution or to hear confessions and give absolutions for sins. It is in keeping with the old custom of confessing sins to the priest before the start of the 40-day Lenten period.

In the times before Vaticen ll, the Lenten Fast and Abstinence rules were quite strict and banned only the consumptiom of meat but of butter, cream, eggs and fat during Lent. The traditional fare on Shrove Tuesday was hearty and included meat and pancakes which were made to use up any eggs, dairy products and fat in the larder.

Shrove Tuesday is February 8th this year. Anyone practice this? Enquiring minds want to know! biggrin.gif

I used to Maggie, but not so much any more. Part of this feast before the famine is to eliminate some of the perishables as well. the hottest part of the year is around the Lenten times, so to consume those things we give up for lent makes more sense than allowing them to go bad.
