I don't like horror movies!
Why that?
Maybe I'm a freak, but I rather read a good horror book. When I read this, I can image the situations in this book with my own "pictures"...
I think a good horror book stands out due to the horror "between the lines".
I can image, that's really difficult to translate (I hope, that's the right word) this into a movie but almost all horror movies I seen were too bloody for me and show moments of shock only.
My absolutely favorite in this matter is Stephen King (who else  ).
In many of his books the horror isn't in the spotlight, but it is always present - even between the lines. (tommyknockers, needful things, deadzone, pet sematary etc).
Unfortunately are the most movies, which based on books by Stephen King, only bloody too and you can't find this "permanent background horror", that King stages so perfect.
Maybe I had "my own pictures" in my head, as I watched these movies, however often I couldn't retrieve situations from book in the movie. It' s a pity, because King writes a really good stuff.

One of my all time favorites is from 1959, "The haunting of Hill House ", by Shirley Jackson, well, the movie was from 1959, not the book, it was scarey, but you never actually saw anything scarey, it was just ,insinuated, it was great, a groupg of people staying in the old house, it even had an old nursey upstairs, spiral staircase and everything.

I saw the remake of that with Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones and then-unknown Owen Wilson. I think Owen Wilson's character died because the director probably couldn't stand looking at his nose any longer  .

... that's fine. Now we are already two... The best of this stuff I ever seen are two (alowedly quite old) movies. The first - a french movie - "Malevil" is based of the same named book by Robert Merle (the book is written in 1971) Some people survive a nuclaer strike in and around a french village. The first group survived in a wine cellar, the secound group are train passengers and they survived, because the train stopped in a tunnel. Like the wind became new structures by live together (of course absolut different in every group) and some day they meet.... Interview with a Vampire (really not that scary). Don't like gore, like in Saw I, II, III etc. etc. etc.) never watched those, never will. The Stand (Stephen King) was well put together for a mini-series movie (I read the uncut version....verra thick book).
