Master of the Welsh Gypsy Harp to appear at the Irish Cultural Center on May 3rd, 2007. at 7PM. Tickets available at the door, from the Center (602-258-0109), and The Welsh League of Arizona, http://www.welshleagueofarizona.org/
General Admission is $15.00, $12:00 seniors, students, children 12 – 16, Under 12 free.
Robin Huw Bowen's influence on the world of Welsh folk music and harping has been far-reaching. Of the few harpists worldwide who can play the triple harp, he is the foremost professional now specializing solely in this particular field. He is recognized internationally as the leading exponent of the Welsh national instrument and ranks among the most important figures that Welsh traditional music has produced. At the Machynlleth Festival 2000 Robin was awarded the Glyndwr Award for "an outstanding contribution to the arts in Wales".
Although Robin's repertoire closely reflects that of the Welsh harp in its heyday (mid-17th to the end of the 19th Century) his playing and interpretation of the music continue the unbroken tradition. Whether it is a fiery tune from the repertoire of the Welsh Gypsies, a long forgotten hornpipe or a slow air showing off the intricacies of his harp's three sets of strings and the unique style of variations on the melody, Robin Huw Bowen is a master musician.
The Press Are Saying...Robin's style reminisces the carefree, Welsh gypsy harpists of the last century, who clung to the tradition of the triple harp even as the respectable London soiree crowd were trading theirs for fashionable new pedal harps. His infectious, always sensitive, sometimes irreverent, arrangements delight in taking the triple harp out of the parlor and into the public house for a bit of fun.
Y DELYN Robin is a stunningly good harpist...the notes trip off the strings with rhythmic precision and melodic empathy. Lawrence Heath, FOLK ROOTS |

BLOOMSDAY MEETS BEERFEST! Join them on the web at www.azirish.org
On Saturday, June 16, at 5pm, the Irish Cultural Center, 1106 North Central in downtown Phoenix, will open its gates for Arizona’s First Annual Bloomin’ Beerfest, a unique event that combines the fine old Irish tradition of Bloomsday with the fine new American tradition of a beer tasting. Co-sponsored by the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation and the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, the event will mark the 103rd anniversary of Leopold Bloom's fictional journey through the streets of Dublin in the James Joyce novel novel, Ulysses. Bloom’s journey included stops at more than a few pubs. At Arizona’s first Bloomin’ Beerfest the available brews will originate with twenty of Arizona’s top craft brewers, rather than with the brewers of Irish beers and ales.
Bloomsday is celebrated in Ireland and throughout the world by Irish people and Joyce fans alike. The name “Bloomsday” derives from Leopold Bloom, the novel’s protagonist; June 16 was the day in 1904 on which the events in Ulysses were set. In the novel, Bloom travels around Dublin meeting fascinating characters and making full use of the city’s pubs. To literary and Joyce lovers around the world, Bloom represents both the Everyman of modern society and the heroic Ulysses of Homer’s great epic poem, The Odyssey.
Arizona’s 2007 Bloomsday celebration will feature the talents of the Arizona Readers Theater who will perform traditional readings from Ulysses, such as “Molly’s Lament,” throughout the evening. Expect to see Molly’s coffin enshrined in the stone cottage at the heart of the Irish Cultural Center. Live music will lighten the mood and traditional Irish and festival food will be available for purchase.
The price of Bloomin’ Beerfest tickets includes admission to the event, 16 tickets which can be presented to taste the wares of participating craft brewers, and a souvenir beer mug. Presale tickets can be purchased online for $25 from May 24 through June 14 at www.azbrewguild.com ($35 at the door). Beer tasting ticket sales are limited to 750 persons. “Designated Driver” tickets for $5 and children under 12 are admitted free of charge. “Readings only” tickets are offered at $15 and can be purchased at the Irish Cultural Center and at the gate. The Proceeds of this event benefit the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation (ICLF), the 501©3 corporation that operates the Irish Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix in partnership with the City of Phoenix. The ICLF operates the Center and its educational and cultural programs to preserve and showcase Irish culture for the education and enjoyment of the people of Arizona.
ICLF’s partner in this event, the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, is a statewide organization of small brewers dedicated to producing quality ales and lagers. They also produce events to familiarize the public with the fine brews produced by their members.
The Irish Cultural Center and Learning Foundation is a 501(c ) 3 Non-profit organization. |

ANTHOLOGY, INC. PARTNERS WITH THE IRISH CULTURAL CENTER FOR THE 1ST EVER LIMERICK CHALLENGE ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14, 2007.
Anthology, Inc., the leading literary arts organization in Phoenix, has partnered with the Irish Cultural Center to present a raucous competition where poets will present their best Limericks on the night of March 14th, 2007. Doors open at 7:00 pm Show starts at 8:00 pm. The public is invited to come and indulge in the hilariously funny poetry form we have all enjoyed since childhood. Anthology is offering ten poets the chance to win a $100 prize in a head-to-head Limerick competition. Prizes will also be awarded for the best Nantucket limerick, funniest limerick, and other creative categories.
Wikipedia describes a limerick is a five-line poem with a strict meter, popularized by Edward Lear. The first line traditionally introduces a person and a location, and usually ends with the name of the location, though sometimes with that of the person. A true limerick is supposed to have a kind of twist to it. This may lie in the final line, or it may lie in the way the rhymes are often intentionally tortured, or in both.
The show has a $7 cover, and takes place the same week as the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Faire. One of the year’s most celebrated cultural events, the Faire runs from 11:00am to 5pm on March 17, 2007 and features Irish Music, Step dancing, Bagpipers, Food & Beverages, and much more.
More information on the Limerick Slam is available at ttp://www.anthology.org/Event_Limerick.html For more on the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Faire visit: http://www.phxirish.org/

Friday, March 30, 2007, 7 PM, Mr. Caimin O'Brien, an archeologist with the Irish Government (Department of Environment, Heritage, and Local Government) will speak at the Irish Cultural Center, 1106 North Central Avenue in Phoenix. Mr. O'Brien is a Trinity College graduate. In his slide presentation and lecture, Mr. O'Brien covers the family background, social status, and roles of saints, such as St. Patrick, St. Columcille of Durrow and Iona, St. Ciarn of Clonmacnoise and others. What became of the Druids? How were their symbols and teachings absorbed? Why did the rulers of a pagan Ireland give up their belief in an established religion to (rather quickly) turn to the new religion? What lead to the rise of Monastic orders and monasteries? Mr. O'Brien has an extensive slide presentation of historical documents, landscape archeology, historic buildings, art and poetry. Images of ruined monasteries, stained glass windows, illuminated manuscripts (think Book of Kells), religious carvings and stonework are part of the explanation of the ancient process of the evolving of religion, which created the world of the round towers made so famous by the popular book, "How the Irish Saved Civilization." Mr. O'Brien has had rave notices from his earlier appearances. You will want to get there early for a good seat. Tickets are $8.00 per person at the door. Need more information, join them on the web at www.azirish.org or call at 602-258-0109.

Arizona Irish Festival Celebrates Ireland Ancient and Modern Saturday, March 25 2006 @ 08:57 AM MST Contributed by: Admin
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (3/24/2006) Phone: 602-308-4601
(March 24, 2006—Phoenix, AZ) The Sixth Annual Arizona Irish Festival is coming to the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix on Saturday, October 28, 2006. The Festival celebrates historic and modern Ireland and commemorates the Irish in America and all over the world.
The traditional stone buildings at the Center, including a replica of a County Clare cottage, provide the backdrop for the Festival. Stage performances will feature traditional ballads and Irish rock ‘n’ roll; storytelling and genuine blarney; and the powerful dancing style that made Riverdance famous. A series of presentations on history, literature, genealogy, and traditional Irish crafts and industry will illustrate the Ireland of yesterday and today.
Hance Park will become an Irish field where visitors can enjoy ancient kings, modern princesses, real pubs and festival grub. Shoppers can purchase trendy Celtic fashion, fine art, CDs, and instruments to make their own music. Those seeking their Irish roots can consult a knowledgeable genealogist. Adults and children are welcome to wear Halloween costumes in celebration of the October 31 holiday that once marked the end of summer for the ancient Celts. A silent auction will offer unique prizes to the bold bidder with good timing, and the winner of the raffle at the end of the day will find tickets to Ireland in his or her hand. Special entertainment will be announced at a later date.
The Arizona Irish Festival is directed by members of E.R.I.N. (Executive Resources for Irish Networking) in association with the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation, a 501©3 not-for-profit corporation. All proceeds of the Festival will benefit the Irish Cultural Center and its ongoing activities.
The Irish Cultural Center is the year-round home for Celtic music, language, and dancing classes; Irish literature and film; touring musicians and actors; and First Friday art exhibits. For more information about the Sixth Annual Arizona Irish Festival, please contact Jackie Carro at 602-308-4601, e-mail [email protected], or Web site www.azirishfestival.org. |
