Yeah! I would agree with that scenario! I would imagine that that is a good outlet for those ladies. However, I found another way, dressing up as an 18thc re-enactor and that probably looks just as silly!

I want to make the sugar cookies that you mix conf sugar and ice the cookie with and the old receipe I had was very buttery! Very rich. A friend gave it to me in 1977. That's how long I've treasured this little piece of paper.
I have never made sugar cookies, but am about to start baking this afternoon so when I'm rummaging through my cookbooks I'll keep an eye out for a recipe that sounds good.
Dang it but its been forever since I had time to read y'all's posts! All of us are pretty swamped right now with holiday responsibilities, aren't we... I finally bought the last Christmas gift yesterday so now I'm free to enjoy the rest of the time before the Big Day itself. I love Christmas!! It's such a deep joy to celebrate the birth of Christ, the single most important person in my life... the One who keeps me grounded & inspired & who gives me a sense of purpose and meaning.

I've a shortbread cookie recipe. We even follow the English Royalty and stamp our own made-up coat of arms on the batter before we bake it. I'm not sure if shortbread will do for you, but, until I find MY sugar cookie recipe, I hope this will be a fair substitute.
SO. . . .
CREAM TOGETHER: 1 cup butter, softened 2/3 cup brown sugar, packed
GRADUALLY SIFT IN AND MIX WELL: 2 cups flour
Make dough into a ball. Pat/roll out about 1/4" thick on floured board. Cut into small shapes, or use a sharp-edged wine glass and make circles, 'lozenges', or crescents. Repeat process until no dough is left. Then you could probably follow the loony Squires, and stamp your coat of arms on the batter before tossing the tray into the oven. Bake on buttered cookie sheet in 350 degrees F oven until golden - about 12-15 minutes. Makes about 3 1/2 dozen cookies.

Okay, are you ready? After looking through (oggling all the way...) 8 different dessert-type books, I've found a classic recipe for sugar cookies with lots of butter in it---does this sound like your missing recipe?
Directions: 1) Whisk flour and salt together in a small bowl. 2) In a large bowl with an electric mixer on med.high speed, beat butter until creamy, about 2 minutes. Add granulated sugar gradually and beat until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes; beat in vanilla. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Add about one-third of flour mixture and mix on low speed. Gradually add remaining flour, mixing just until blended. Scrape dough onto large piece of plastic wrap, form into two very flat discs, cover completely with wrap, and refrigerate until firm enough to roll out, at least 2 hours or overnight. 3) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper. 4) Take 1 disc and roll out to 1/4-inch thickness on floured surface; you may need to flour the pin, too. Cut out cookies with shapes of choice. Place 2 inches apart on cookie sheet. Decorate with colored sugars or granulated sugar if you wish. Bake until edges just begin to turn light golden brown, about 10 minutes. Slide parchment onto racks to cool cookies completely.
