you might be a Yankee if...

Instead of referring to two or more people as "y'all," you call them "you guys," even if both of them are women.

You think barbecue is a verb meaning "to cook outside."

You think Heinz Ketchup is really SPICY.

You would never stop to buy something somebody was cooking on the side of the road.

You don't have any problems pronouncing "Worcestershire sauce" correctly.

For breakfast, you would prefer potatoes-au-gratin to grits.

You never had and don't know what a moon pie is.

You've never, ever eaten okra -- fried, boiled, or pickled.

You eat fried chicken with a knife and fork.

You've never seen a live chicken, and the only cows you've seen are on road trips.

You have no idea what a polecat is.

You don't see anything wrong with putting a sweater on your dog.

You would rather vacation at Martha's Vineyard than at Six Flags.

You would rather have your son become a lawyer than grow up to get his own TV fishing show.

You drink either "Pop" or "Soda"- instead of "Cokes."

You've never eaten and don't know how to make a tomato sandwich.

You have never planned your summer vacation around a gun-'n-knife show.

You think more money should go to important scientific research at your university than to pay the salary of the head football coach.

You don't have any hats in your closet that advertise feed stores.

You call binoculars opera glasses.

You can't spit out the car window without pulling over to the side of the road and stopping.

You don't know anyone with at least two first names (i.e., Joe Bob, Faye Ellen , Billy Ray, Mary Jo, Bubba Dean, Joe Dan, Mary Alice)

You don't know any women with male names (i.e., Tommie, Bobbie, Johnnie, Jimmie)

You don't have Maw-maw's & Paw-paw's.

You've never been to a craft show.

None of your fur coats are homemade.

You have no idea who the Allisons, Pettys or Earnhardts are.

Now wait a Minute!!! I grew up in Ohio, have lived here in New England for 21 1/2 years, so I'd definitely qualify as a Yankee, but I don't fit the stereotype. (maybe it's because my hubby's family is from West Virginia, and my parents both grew up in Indiana??) For instance......

* Okay, I do call friends and family "you guys", but have been known to use "y'all" on occasion.
* Barbecue is both a verb and great sauce!
* "Spicy"?!?!? laugh.gif laugh.gif
* Well, okay, you have me there. Who knows what they've got in there?
* Listen, it took me many months, and I worked hard to say "Worcestershire" correctly!
* Give me bacon with my eggs, not potatoes.
* We ate many a moon pie as kids, they're good!
* I have too eaten okra, once and only once, and don't ever give it to me again!!
* Chicken has always been "finger food" in our family
* Hey, I grew up in farm country. I know what real fresh country air smells like, too!
* I do know what a polecat is, thank you.
* Dogs don't belong in sweaters. Whoever thought that one up should be shot!
* Six Flags, hands down!!
* We've always told our girls they could become anything they want to be (but if they go into Politics we'll have to seriously think about disowning them!) wink.gif
* You know, I always called it "pop", and still do. "Tonic" (which is what they call it here) sounds like an alcoholic drink to me.
* I don't care for tomatoes.
* Well, you got me here too. You'll never find me near such shows, ever.
* I don't know. I don't particularly have much respect for scientific studies about why toddlers can't seem to ride bikes without training wheels, so the football coach may just as well have the money instead....
* Listen, you should see the hats that wind up in this house. We've got drawers full, and I'm sure if I looked I'd find at least 6 advertising such wonderful stores.
* Binoculars are just that. Opera glasses are quite different, and I don't own them.
* I don't spit in public.
* Half my relatives go by two first names (on my hubby's side!)
* Why can't women have names like that??
* We do still have Ma, but Pappa passed away several years ago now, and we miss him.
* Craft shows are interesting places. You never know what you're going to find!
* I don't have any fur coats.
* I do know who they are, just am not particularly into Racing.

See? There are such things as Enlightened Yankees! cheers.gif

I have never figured out how I became a 'guy.' I hate being called a 'guy.' Call me ma'am, hey you or whatever, but don't call me 'guy.'

Dreamer1, I didn't know you married a Mountaineer! What part of WV is hubby from, if you don't mind me asking? biggrin.gif

QUOTE (MacEoghainn @ 07-Mar-2005, 07:19 PM)

I use both. And I almost never change based on gender. If I do, it's an afterthought

It can be both. But I mainly think of a kinda mild sauce that just happens to have a little more kick than Ketchup

Are you kidding? Ketchup? Spicy? Give me a break. Mix it with a healthy dose of jalapenos, red peppers, and other spices, and eventually you might be able to make it halfway spicy.

I can't see myself doing that, no.

Never really tried to know if I can pronounce it correctly or not.

I've never convinced myself to eat grits. au-gratin don't belong as breakfast though

I've had a moon pie, and honestly am not a huge fan of them

nope, can't say I have

are you kidding? How can you get at it that way? Not that I haven't tried on occasion. It just doesn't work.

I've not only seen live cattle, I've had a hand in raising a calf and milked a cow before. And spent some time collecting eggs from a hen house, and watched chicks hatch in an incubator

I know full well what a polecat is. Phwew.

People who put clothes on their pets need help I think (don't tell my neighbor I said that though)

Six Flags any day

not applicable. Can I say none of the above?

I don't care what you call it! Just get me my Caffiene!!!

I'd rather have more substance to it. add some bacon. Give me a BLT sans the L and I'm happy

Nope, wouldn't do that. I'd attend the show if it were convenient though.

ok, agree here. research is more important. (see neighbor note above, different one though)

Nope. Actually, no hats in my closet to begin with. I borrow on the rare occasion I need one

say what? Uhh, right. sure. Keep opera away from me

I probably could, but there's something wrong about spitting out the window.

I have known some people like that before, I'd have to think about currently though.

I work with a few.

Not in my case. Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa smile.gif

nope

No fur coats

I don't watch Nascar and I know who they are. Although I think of 80's pop before I think of racing when I hear the name Petty. Who can not know who Dale Earnhardt is though? Poor fellow :'(

1. I never, ever say you guys.
2. In North Carolina, there are two food groups, Lexington Style BBQ and Eastern Style BBQ.
3. Haven't thought of ketchup as spicy since I was...well never.
4. Bought food at roadside in the past, but haven't seen any in quite a while.
5. Say it, Heck, I can't even spell it.
6. Grew up on grits.
7. Ditto Moon Pies.
8. Ditto okra.
9. Fried chicken is why they invented napkins and hand wipes.
10. Seen live ones, seen 'em get their heads chopped off (except Grandmama wrung their necks), scalded 'em, plucked 'em and cooked 'em. Probably have known more cows in my life than people. Ever had milk still warm from the cow? I have.
11. Run into a couple in my youth.
12. Why do people put clothes on animals?
13. Actually, would rather plan my vacation around camping in the mountains.
14. If either one of my sons had become a lawyer, I'd have wondered where I went wrong.
15. Been drinking cokes all my life (no matter what brand they are).
16. Before air conditioning, a favorite summer meal was sliced tomatoes (fresh from the garden), a loaf of bread and a jar of mayonaise.
17. Haven't done that one.
18. Both are important.
19. Feed stores, tractors, dog food, and several other things.
20. I call 'em binoculars, sophisticated folk call 'em stadium glasses.
21. Yes I can.
22. Half the people I know.
22. Know plenty of 'em.
23. In my family it was grandmama and granddaddy.
24. Been to more than I can count.
25. Don't have any fur coats.
26. My cousin works for DEI, his son works for Hendrick.

I'm just an old country boy from NC. biggrin.gif No where close to a yankee.

I really think those folks that speak lacking a "twang" in their voice are just pure jealous!

Lookehear! See I do know how to spell it!

Hi Maggie!

Hubby's parents both grew up in WV, Gilbert and Delbarton, and hubby spent many Summers at grandparents' houses. The very first time I met his family was over Christmas break, up in Gilbert. Everyone had come up (36 people!), and we all got snowed in unexpectedly! I heard many years later that his Mom told him if I stayed with him after that I was his for life laugh.gif It was actually pretty entertaining.
Wherabouts are you??
