As a boy we cried it Hallowe'en and of a nicht wid gang oot " Guisin " ( prob derives from the word Disguise). We wid call at neeboors hooses and go in and dae a turn. This would involve sining or rectin a verse or twa or telling a joke. As a reward we wid get sweets ,apples, nuts etc.If we wir at a pairtie we wid dook fur aiples. A tin bath fu o watter wid be pit oot oan the flair, filled wi watter an aiples. We wid then dunk for them or kneel on chair facing backwards tae the bath and try to spear an aiple wi a fork. Anither game wid be astring raised atween twa poles about 6ft high, an treacle scones hung from it covered in sticky treacle, an try an eat them with yir hauns tied ahent yer back, no so easy. Trick or treat is an americanisation (apologies to my American Celtic brothers and sisters). We still cry it hallow e'en.Onyways hae a guid ane.
Slainte.
