Sex, Mischief And Witches: Dark Side Of

Life Discovered In A Medieval Oxford Nunnery

Archaeologists excavating a medieval Benedictine nunnery in Oxford have shed light on the darker side of convent life.

The excavation of the Littlemore Priory, which was founded in 1110 and dissolved in 1525, has revealed nearly 100 skeletons of men, women and children.

Among these are a series of “very unusual burials”, including the remains of a woman buried in the face-down position.

Team leader Paul Murray of John Moore Heritage Services, said in a statement: “This was perhaps a penitential act to atone for their sins or the sins of their families. Her lower legs had been truncated by the later internment of an infant.”

Speaking to the BBC, Murray added: “It’s unusual for someone so young to be buried within the church. And sometimes women found in prone positions are considered to be witches.”

Other remains revealed a victim who was the victim of a blunt force trauma to the back of the head, a stillborn child and a leper.

Background: The Flood name was originally Fludd or Floyd. The English name Floyd is the same as the Welsh Llwyd (or clwyd), meaning brown, gray, hoary or the Welsh Lloyd and Lhuyd, meaning gray or brown. The Irish surname Floyd was originally from the Gaelic McTuile, O Maoltuile, or Mac Maoltuile. Tuile meant ‘flood’ and in Ireland, Tully and Flood were interchangeable. The surname Lloyd has its home in North and South Wales; but it is frequently found in Shropshire, Hereford, and Monmouth, England.

Variations: Floyd, Floyde, Flude, Flood, Floode, Lloyd, Llwyd, Lloid, Loyd, Loid, Lwyd, Tully, MacTully, Talley, Tally.

Background: This Scottish name is habitational from a place in the parish of Gamrie, near Banff. The place is situated on a headland affording some sheltered anchorage, and is said to get its name from Middle English true hope; however, when first recorded in 1296 it already appears as Trup, so it is more likely to be of the same origin as Thorpe and other names of this origin.

Variations: Troup, Tromp, Trout, Troop, Tropp, Troy, Troupe, Troia, Trapp, Topp, Grof, Gropp, Roup, Groat, Troup, Grosh, Rous, Stoup, Coup, Dropp.

I think one of the issues with the App is it is required that you log-in to the App. For this, you can manually setup an account or you can use Facebook.

We used Facebook to register and login to test it recently on an iPhone 8 Plus. One thing it did require, even with the Facebook register, is an email address. It popped up asking to enter an email address.

After that it did let us login and use the App.

If anyone has issues logging in, just use our contact form and we can either 1) Update your password or 2) Preregister an account for you.

The App is supported by our Celtic Radio Founder's and yearly fund raising event, so we have a basic and premium part of the App which provides a good way to support Celtic Radio.

Charlie Allen, known for his work with Saor Patrol, is a full-rounded musician with a very eclectic background. Recently, he released one of his most ambitious recording efforts to date: “Battle of the Kings.” This amazing release is not only a piece of music in itself: it actually fits into a much larger scope, and it is a part of a larger set of projects and initiative, touching on many different spheres. Charlie Allen explores a wide variety of industries, ranging from multi-media experience, to film, cinema and many more. For instance, he is attached to the acclaimed Netflix Movie, “Outlaw King” as well as a wide variety of other projects. One of the most intriguing recent initiatives led by Charlie Allan and Saor Patrol was definitely Duncarron Fort, a historic replica of a medieval village, located in Carron Valley, Scotland.

The charming historical recreation site was recently visited by famed Australian movie star Russell Crowe, who also happens to be a personal friend of Charlie Allen as well! The pair have been friends for quite a long time. In fact, they met on the set of one of Russell Crowe’s most high profile big-budget films: The Gladiator. The successful film, also starring celebrity actors such as Joaquin Phoenix, went on to gain popularity on a global scale.

Hidden Medieval Caves Discovered

at Culzean Castle in Scotland

user posted image

Legend has it that a piper and his dog once ventured into the caves below Scotland’s Culzean Castle, determined to refute locals’ belief that the underground tunnels were haunted. As the pair entered the labyrinthine network, the piper started playing his bagpipes, sending the echo of its shrill wails—occasionally punctuated by the dog’s accompanying barks—from the caves to the castle above. Soon, both bagpipes and barks fell eerily silent. Neither the piper nor his dog were ever seen again—at least not alive. Stop by Culzean (pronounced cull-ane) on a stormy night, particularly one that coincides with when the castle’s one-time clan owners host a wedding, and you may just hear the piper’s doleful last tune, simultaneously celebrating a descendant’s marriage and bemoaning its player’s fate.

OUTLAW KING

For those Braveheart Fans out there, we have been wondering for 20 years if someone would ever produce a movie about Scotland's other greatest hero - Robert the Bruce.

Well, that time has come and it is in the form of a NetFlix original film called Outlaw King. With a 120 million dollar budget, filmed entirely in Scotland and featuring some pretty famous names (as well as some actors from Braveheart), this movie is already making headlines.

Release date is set for November 9th, 2018 on Netflix and in select theaters across the U.S. Check the first official HD Trailer:

There is already reports that this might be the first of a Trilogy as reported by The Scottish Sun. Although that might mean the story will not be complete until the third movie (think Lord of the Rings), we will take it anyways! Check out the below set picture just released.

So happy to hear your feedback it just makes our day!

We work really hard on having the right mix of music which allows for a mix of really excellent Celtic Music with new artists and musicians - which can be tough. We also like to cycle through the different sub-genres like bagpipes, harp music and pub music - but who wants to hear just one sub-genre all the time.

For myself, I find the music helps me be productive and focus on my work. It's also a great release to when I want to get away from the never ending pop 40 hits on the radio. And as shared with a member of the Elders many years - it's going to be hard to reproduce our mix of sounds.

So a great big THANK YOU back at you! Made our day!

We recently received a note from one of our listeners from Israel that was unable to tune-in to the music because their employer was blocking the internet stream. She spoke with the ADMIN of their system and unfortunately there was nothing that could be done about it due to default blocking programs.

We have many members that listen while at work, but unfortunately many employers like to block internet radio and do not understand the benefits that music brings to productivity and the workplace. If you are unable to tune in at work, it could be that your employer is blocking the stream. As a solution, we offer three of broadcasts using a Web Proxy system that may allow you to tune-in when the stream is being blocked

 • Highlander Radio
 • Salty Dog Radio
 • Celtic Moon

To access the special streaming system, please visit the MUSIC section under the DASHBOARD and scroll down to WEB Proxy listening.

Yes, we do have a mobile APP and we do have mobile listening, but the best way to listen to Celtic Radio when in the car is if you have the Tune-In App.

You can bring up the Celtic Radio Network App and then bluetooth it to your car, but if you have the dash board system called Apple Car Play or for the Android, simply download the tune-in App and then search for Highlander Radio or any of our other channels to connect in-car.

It's wonderful to be blasting out some pipe tunes while rolling down 95. I usually turn it down a bit at traffic lights, but sometimes not and get a few looks. thumbs_up.gif biggrin.gif

We thought about producing a video to show how to do this if anyone is interested.

I was reading a Top Ten movie list for Celtic type movies and came across a move that I have never seen before. In fact, I don't know how I missed this because apparently it was one of the most watched series in 2001.

It is called the Mists of Avalon and it is about the King Arthur stories, Merlin, Uther, Lancelot. Tried to find it on streaming and it is no where to be found.

So, purchased the DVD from Amazon and watched the first hour. It is very long over 3 hours. A good movie I am enjoying it.

5,500-year-old passage tomb at

Dowth is ‘find of a lifetime’

user posted image

A 5,500-year-old passage tomb uncovered at Dowth Hall in the heart of the Brú na Bóinne World Heritage site in Co Meath is “the most significant megalithic find in Ireland in the last 50 years”, archaeologists believe.

Dr Ní Lionáin said the people who built the tombs would probably have been “the children or grandchildren or great grandchildren of some of the first farmers in Ireland”.

“In terms of designing these monuments, they were really good architects, engineers and also astronomers, because we often get alignments on various different solstices. And we can also see from what the art we have here they were amazing artists as well. Even though we don’t know what this art means, everyone who comes here is struck by this art.”

Scotland's 5,000-year-old carved stone balls.

Shrouded in mystery!

user posted image

Hundreds of elaborately carved stone balls dating from Prehistoric Scotland have been discovered over the centuries, but their purpose remains a mystery.

More than 500 of the stone balls have been found in total, most sized to fit neatly into the palm of the hand. They have been shaped so that a number of knobs protrude from the surface and some have beautiful, intricate patterns incised onto them.

So elaborate are the carvings that early archaeologists didn't believe it was possible for them to have been made using flint tools, so they dated them to a later period. But we know they were indeed carved using flint and date back to around 3,200 BC to 2,500 BC, a time when people in Scotland were leaving their lives as hunter gatherers and settling into life in farming communities.

I agree if anyone knows of any totally free Celtic games or even ones that have a one-time charge that would be ideal.

The Gothard Sisters stand out as a really hard-working group of musicians, keeping close bonds not only with family, but also with the roots of a genre of music they know and love deeply. Folk music is timeless, pure and unadulterated, and one of the most intriguing things about The Gothard Sisters is that they keep celebrating their love for the genre, while stamping their own personality on the music they perform. As a result, listeners can enjoy something that’s broader and more direct, definitely allowing the band to combine their musicianship with their compositional sensibilities...
