I would be interested what does Avalon means to you.
Is it a mystic place where King Arthur awaits till Britannia needs him,
or is it an imaginary place where live will be perfect?
Or is there maybe a place that you would call Avalon?
Have you ever been there?
Tell me what you think!

Seriously, since all we know about Avalon is what we read, then yes, I think it's where King Arthur rests in waiting. king.gif

If we get to go there, can I have Lancelot? No, Elspeth I'm not sharing!

I can promise you I wouldn't go to a convent! Ha ha!

Avalon is not a thing of jest .... you must accept the myth or legend as is ....or not .... but those of us who believe in our pure Celtic heritage .... accept it as such

Seriously .... Avalon is a way to pin your hopes and dreams onto something .... if we don't believe in something then what is left .... Avalon is one of those things we tend to zero in on to try to attach ourselves to some kind of reality/fantasy in order to be able to accept the reality or our every day existence .... sometimes vey hard .... we have to believe in something .... for me it is Avalon and all the mythological connnotations that go along with it .... something out there must be real unsure.gif

It is where my wife is able to spend obscene amounts of money on perfume, lipstick, soap and ... wait a minute... No, that's Avon. Sorry, my bad. wink.gif

Seriously, I place Avalon on the same par as Valhalla or, dare I say it, Middle-Earth. It is existent only in reference to the mythological cycle which supports it.

Just my tuppence.

I believe its a place where Gaia and the sprits can live peacefully.
a place where King Aurther waits and where everything is beautiful and lively.
A place I wish I could live.

Why get serious?

You've got to chill, man. And yes, it is a car.

Besides, I gave my serious answer.

Avalon has aways been the "land behind the curtain" in my opinion. The land were faeries, Sprites, gods, goddesses, and heros wait. They aren't trapped there, they are just waiting for a need to arise where people would need or call for their help.

Which brings up, did anyone see Mists of Avalon? Good mini-series. thumbs_up.gif thumbs_up.gif

Yes, I did see the mini-series, and even own it on DVD. It did suffer from one inescapable fatal flaw: I read the book first. biggrin.gif Even considering that, I feel they did a decent job of bringing the book to the screen. To me, they did play down Bradley's take on Christian hostility toward the old religions. It was there, but not as starkly portrayed as in the book.

As I said, a good flick. thumbs_up.gif

Avalon.. small question ahilissa: Gaia as greek mythology, Avalon Early English... *blinks*

I think it's a place where people cling to in hope for a better future... or at least they used to.

Highlander, relax, nobody will tell you what to believe in here. If you have to state your beliefs all the time and give others the warning glance it might look a wee bit odd. To me it seems that your beliefs don't stand on a very stable ground when you have to justify them... =/

AVALON
To me its the place where fairies, elves. unicorns, dragons and king arthur are in untill time come along for us to need them. It is like summerland a place for theotherworldly to rest and prpare for the day when humankind needs them.

OK, after you all tell what it means to you I don´t want to keep back my thoughts.
For me Avalon is (of course) a mystic place where live will be perfect, where King Arthur and all those heroes are awaiting for us until we need them....
But for me it is also a place I have been a long time before. For other people it is a normally old, overgrown apple garden. But in this place I experienced a time of perfect happiness and love.
But now this Avalon is concealed in the mists of my memories and, maybe, behind the mists of the future is a new Avalon awaiting for me.
Now for me this garden is a normally garden again, only in my memories and if I close my eyes I feel the remains of what that place once meant to me.

But I still keep searching for a new Avalon.....

COOL! smilie_osx.gif

Avalon exists in many places. It is where we seek it. Sometimes it is in ourselves, our loved ones, or that place in our memory we return to when escape is the only answer.

Everybodys ideas are great! Some of us how ever need to take a pill!
To me Avalon is a place where my family can all come together in peace and harmony. Never had that, think it would be really great.

Posted by: JaneyMae 11-Dec-2003, 08:27 PM
heart.gif Avalon exists in the mountains where bald eagles play and the deer eat in the yard. The snow is deep and it frosts the trees. Steam rises from the river below and everything is quiet and peaceful. It is a place where grandkids can sled on the hill in front and run in to warm themselves by the fire and drink hot cocoa. biggrin.gif Ya, that would have to be it.

Yes, but Gaia is also Mother Nature in which the goddess worship.

well.. I busied myself with a lot of religious beliefs and mythologies, that's why I'm asking...
I am a bit "stubborn" on terminology though wink.gif

but I would say (I'm not very experienced in this, and it probably belongs into the grove wink.gif ) that there are different forms of paganism, worhipping the mother goddess/earth etc is over here usually combined with the other regional gods.. calling her gaia would be scrambling things together in my mind... =o

In greek mythology gaia was only strongly worshipped through earlier periods, before Zeus took over the Pantheon (I love Greek Mythology.. it's got high story value wink.gif biggrin.gif )

If you can clear things up for my poor wee brain I'd be happy =)

Posted by: AhilissaMay 13-Dec-2003, 12:15 PM
It's hard to explain really. I have always thought of them being one and the same i.e Gaia being nature and all....its just the same to me, sorry im trebile with this things.

When I think of Avalon I think of A Toyota Avalon automobile or "Avalon" the Christian rock group...
now if we are talking about "Avalon" with King Arthur and all that it's just a story to me. Not anything tangible. If it were I would imagine it as a beautiful place like the highlands of Scotland where the mist rolls in at all hours of the day and men and women wearing beautiful clothing of that period. Life would be difficult and rough but men would be knights in shining armour and women would be helpless.

Well so much for the fantasy. Most women I know don't want to be helpless. They want to be in control.

When I think of Avalon, I have the song that the McCalmans sang in my head.
It started...."My love is gone to Avalon, the winter here's too cold." I loved that song.My sister had a tape that it was on and played it constantly. walkman.gif

spielverderber! (spoilsport)... you're not much of a chevalier, eh?

Ahilissa: I thought of that concept but call me a nitpicking idiot but shouldn't people stick to one mythological background?

Avalon, The Natural Get-Away... in Paw Paw, West Virginia!

Legend has it that, shortly after the Crucifixion of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathaea built the first Christian church where the abby ruins now stand. King Arthur was buried here, and Glastonbury has been home to Saint Patrick, Dunston, David and Bridget.

I am most likely way off base with my thinking, but it comforts me. I have always believed that the mind is the builder, and Avalon, or the concept of Avalon, is the place we all go after death. In that place, we can "build" any "lifestyle" we like as we study our past mistakes and triumphes in order to progress in a new life. In this concept, King Arthur COULD have come back to help England in her time of need. (As Churchill, although he is not my minds picture of King Arthur, lol. There were many other men he could have come back as.)

As I say, these thoughts comfort me. I hate the thought that we go through our lives, learning, teaching and advancing if it is all for nothing.

Just a thought.

Someday I'd really, truly love to visit Glastonbury to see the Tor, the Chalice Well, the Orchards, the Abbey ruins, and Joseph's Church. I'd very much like to believe that Avalon still waits there, and is accessible to anyone who has that remarkable gift to find it. It holds such Promise, in so many depths, that I am unable to put it all into words.

On the lighter side of this discussion- if we could choose our own place that reflects the peace offered by Avalon, then this would be one of my places to experience it...

Avalon does exist. It is 26 miles off the California coast. Avalon is the name of the harbor city on Santa Catalina Island. I believe it is part of the "Channel Islands" I have been away from California long enough now that the useless facts are getting blurry. there are no monkeys there.

Posted by: oldraven 15-Jan-2004, 11:48 PM
Avalon is on Brock Island, (named after the stone figure we left on the shore), in the middle of Archibalds lake. It's my island! (first time I got to say that to a group who would apreciate the joke)

It really is mine though, in all but the legal sense. About fifteen minutes drive out an unused logging road on my parents land, there is another fifteen minute trek down a path through the forest, you'll find the lake. I was the first to go to that island, in my fathers canoe, and the first to camp there. The moss is green, and about eight inches thick, and the trees are very, very old there. Obviously it's never been logged. Critters everywhere, but nothing bigger than a fox. There is an animal path I found, (but didn't chop anything down. Just cleaned it up), and it leads to a small thicket where there are spaces in a circle big enough for three to ten men tents. Had a long weekend party there with about 12 friends. One of those instances where you find the hippie within. wink.gif Lots of skinny dipping.

It is a very special place, to me in particular.

Oh, just to add something. I proposed to Angela in that very canoe, in the middle of that lake, on our way to spend the night on that island. I bought my acoustic that day, as a beard for buying the ring, and that was the first time I played and sang anything for her.

No one's been there since. (Not even me. I didn't get there on our vacation last year.)
