Hallo a h-uile duine! Agus fàilte!
Hello everyone! And welcome!

My name is WizardofOwls and I have been appointed the new moderator of the Gaelic Language forum! And, boy, do I ever have some big shoes to fill! Dannan was a wonderful, well-rounded moderator and I'm sure that we will all miss her! I hope she'll be hanging around, though, and helping out some as her busy schedule permits! smile.gif

As I said, I am the new moderator, and I want to welcome you all to the Gaelic Language forum. As many of you probably already know, I am a student of Scottish Gaelic. I am of Scottish descent on my mother's side (Clan McKay) and I have a deep interest in anything Scottish!

However, just because my area of knowledge is Scottish Gaelic, please don't assume that this is now the Scottish Gaelic forum! I would like to encourage learners of Irish and Manx Gaelic, as well as learners of Breton, Welsh and Cornish (and Scots too!) to use the forums here! I am sure that we have many learners here who would love to help out with your questions!

Anyway, I would like to start posting some Scottish Gaelic lessons soon. I know that Dannan had started posting some lessons already, but I'm not sure what source she was using, so I will be starting a whole new set of lessons for anyone who is interested!

Two major rules to keep in mind...

First and foremost, be kind to one another!

And secondly, other than the forums labeled Gaelic Only, please post translations of any Gaelic that you use. We have many learners here of various stages in their learning, and the beginners would like to know what you have to say too! smile.gif

I hope you enjoy your stay!

A rithist, fàilte!
Again, welcome!

Congratulations Wizard! I am sure you will be really good at this. I don't have a clue either. I do have a scottish gaelic dictionary and I try to make sense out of it. It is Scottish Gaelic English English Scottish Gaelic Dictionary by R.W. Renton J.A. MacDonald. Have you heard of this? smile.gif

Hallo a h-uile duine! Agus tapadh leibh!
Hi everybody! And thank you!

What a warm warm welcome! I have two goals for this place. The first is to inspire you to learn Gaelic (or any of the other Celtic languages... all are endangered and could use your support!), and if my little spot here lights that spark within you, then I feel I have done my job!

Second is to make this place better and better! If any of you have any comments or suggestions on how to accomplish this goal, please feel free to post them here, pm them to me, or send them via e-mail!

Now, on to some personal responses...

Rindy, yes, I have a copy of that dictionary and in my opinion it is one of the best available for beginners! Do you have a lesson text, like Teach Yourself Gaelic or Scottish Gaelic in 3 Months? These are both excellent. With your dictionary and one of these texts (and the cassette tapes that come with the texts) you have everything you need to get started! Have you tried the 1st lesson I posted? Give it a try and see how you do!

Gordon, dragonboy, and Em - Welcome to Gaelic! In the years since I have started learning, it has become an obsession with me! Growing from a start of one dictionary and one text, my reference library now includes 10 dictionaries, 9 Gaelic texts, a phrasebook, a thesaurus, a Gaelic Bible and several other books on Gaelic! I hope you grow to love it as much as I have. I think the lessons I have posted here are a good place to start! Give them a try! And be sure to go to the website and hear the words too!

Beannachdan Dé oirbh uile!
God's blessings on you all!

Hello,

I am interested in Scots Gaelic as well. I am looking for good books to learn but would also welcome a real teacher if there would be one close by.

So I guess I am looking for the books you mentioned and start with those.

I guess since I speak germand and english and learn french 15 years back I guess I will manage to get some gaelic in my old grey cells.

Well, if I knew how - I would thank you already in advance in gaelic but I guess that has to wait so I thank you in english for now.

I have officially start learning scottish gaelic last week.I am using 2 sites which some people here have recommend me.It is less difficult then I thought first.French is my first language , english a second(not my best but good enough). The only problem is site to another site the prononciation seem different.I listen the audio files and some word are different, really.

For our moderator I have a suggestion, when we enter on the celtic language, there is too much important topic. Why did you not divided the forum , each gaelic form should have is forum. There is too much topic when you enter if new learner are looking for something specific we have to search here and there.A clean up would be great .It should be more clear .It's my point of view you may not agree but having more order should help.

Hi Nancy-Raven!

I placed a request to the owner of the site to address this exact problem some time ago. However he is very busy at the moment and has not had a chance to fix it up for us yet. Hopefully sometime in the near future, he will get around to it.

It seems a long time nobody have post. For the moment I have learn a few sentences and words. Now I have print 4 pages of a glossary for prononciation and I will print a lesson made by Dannan(sorry if the spelling is wrong).I didn't have my dictionnary yet and a translation to do but it should wait .I will go to see an artisan to have an extraordianry sword for my course and demonstration we do,2 horses at the base and a gaelic inscription: I protect the owner of this sword, giving courage , ability and strength for fighting. If I believe in it maybe it will help me to be more concentrated in my medieval fencing course and be better then men or at least equal.Having a special sword will get attention of men.Men always tought they are better because they are men.

It will be interesting if beginners and those more advance learner of gaelic post on a regular base to know if everything is find and if they make progress in their lesson.Maybe we could exchange a few trick advance and beginner. It would be nice.
