AWESOME UPDATE ~ Skully and Vince Are Back !

It's Business as Usual with the Rescue Fort Camden Project ~ Skully and Vince are Going Forward with the Forthcoming Plans to Continue the Fort Camden Restoration and I am Extremely Happy and Proud of the Whole Team!
Thank You ALL for Your Attention to this Incredible News!

Skully and the Restoration of Fort Camden

In 2010 a 4 man team Vince Farr, Noel Condon, Paul Brierly and Skully formed the Rescue Camden group.
With the help of Noel O'Driscoll (Cork Co. Council) in July 2010 restoration work finally began.
22 July 2010.
The handing over of the key to the RESCUE CAMDEN Committee
In 1938 The British Navy marched out of the fortress for the last time, handing it over in pristine condition to the Irish free-state army.
Sadly, since then Fort Camden has been neglected, and recently it has been systematically vandalized. Not one single part of this stunning facility has been left undamaged.

A Short History of Fort Meagher
Fort Meagher was originally constructed by the British Military along with other coastal defences in the Cork Harbour area during the Napoleonic Wars. During the British rule the fort bore the name Fort Camden - after the second Early of Camden, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1795. It occupies a 60 acre site 200 feet above sea level.
Fort Meagher is situated on the west side of the entrance to Cork Harbour. On the opposite side of the entrance lies Fort Davis (Fort Carlisle) which is still used by the Irish Army.
Between 1850 and 1865 the fort served as a convict prison. It was returned to military use being extended and extended present size during the period 1875 to 1880 using both contract and convict labour from the nearby Spike Island convict prison. During this extension 30 additional guns were installed

Along with other military bases in the Cork Harbour area the British garrison remained 1938. However with war clouds looming in Europe and the presence of the British military threatening Irish neutrality the British withdrew on July 11, 1938 from Cork Harbour, along with the other "Treaty Ports", and they were handed over to the then Irish Free State Army.
The Irish Army renamed the fort after Thomas Francis Meagher. Meagher was born in the City of Waterford, Ireland, in 1823. He was educated at Stonyhurst College, in Lancashire, England and played a key part in the Young Ireland Rebellion in 1848. After the rebellion he was sentenced to transportation to a penal colony in Tasmania from where he escaped to the United States of America.
He fought on the Union side in the American Civil War rising to the rank of Brigadier General, following the war he became Governor of Montana and died in a drowning "accident" in 1867. [Full biography on Wikipedia]
Fort Meagher was occupied by the army during "The Emergency" as WWII is often referred to in Ireland. Following the war it was used by the Irish Naval Service.
In 1989 the fort was sold to Cork County Council who according to various web sources have a long term plan to develop a Military Heritage Centre and tourist accommodation.

A great example of what can be done (and lots has been done in the short amount of time the project started) once a community pulls together.

Fort Camden is a magnificent fortress that looms over Cork’s beautiful harbor in the South of Ireland. Steeped in history, but badly neglected and randomly vandalized, Fort Camden is in desperate need of some TLC. Sadly it is also a race against time. Just last week ago one of the old buildings collapsed.

What started out as the dream of four men, determined to once again "breathe" life back into one of Ireland's beautiful abandoned buildings, has quickly turned into a mammoth project supported by many others. Local businesses are not only donating material such as paint and windows, but are also giving advice on how to best proceed with bringing Fort Camden back to its former glory. Historical details have to be taken into consideration as well as replacing items that have been damaged or destroyed by time and careless visitors. Former Military Personnel and Volunteers are working side by side, cleaning, painting and locating items such as missing window shutters and fireplace mantels.

A few nights a generator was used to test the lights in one of the rooms. The light shone warmly through the newly installed windows. For a brief moment Fort Camden was alive again!

UP DATE!

Fort Camden has opened it's gates on September 4th! The Rescue Camden Group, with help of dedicated volunteers and donations by local businesses, has renovated the first two rooms of the once abandoned Fort overlooking beautiful Cork Harbor! The rooms have been transformed into a Museum and an Art Gallery.
Hundreds of people attended the opening last weekend.

Here is what Skully and the Rescue Camden Group had to say on Facebook:

"FORT CAMDEN is uniting our community! hundreds of people from all walks of life, from all over the Country came to support us. People wept, people laughed, old friends met again, families came together.

Our small band of volunteers made it look as if we open Forts every week! Everything went off without a hitch...

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!!"

The Fort will be open to the public on a limited basis every Saturday and Sunday from 12.00pm to 5.00pm for the Month of September.

Be witness of the amazing transformation and make friends with the FORT CAMDEN Page over at Facebook! Check out the beautiful before and after photos of the work done so far. You will also find a little surprise on the Page; a montage of photography by Siobhan Russell, Joleen Cronin and Gary Sullivan. MUSIC BY SKULLY!!

Fort Camden Restoration

Below article in Hot Press:

Photobucket

Metisse support Cork's Rescue Camden Project

The county's Napoleonic fortress is being restored to its former glories.

Metisse mainman Skully is currently on the flat of his back, painting, wiring, cleaning and scrubbing at ..Cork..'s ....Fort.. ..Camden.....

As he reveals to Hot Press, “I am part of the four-man Rescue Camden Group who have started the renovation of this beautiful, but sadly neglected Napoleonic fortress."

Located on Rams Head near Crosshaven, the fort derives its name from the Earl of Camden who was Lord Lieutenant of ....Ireland.... in 1795. In 1938 The British Navy marched out of the fortress for the last time, handing it over in pristine condition to the Irish Free State Army.

"This is a Crosshaven Tourism project in conjunction with Cork County Council & Fas," reads their mission statement. "Despite best efforts, ....Fort.. ..Meagher.... has been vandalised, ransacked and defaced. Our aim is to clean and restore this magnificent fortress to its former glory and thus create a tourism and heritage centre which will not only become a huge attraction, locally, nationally and globally but will also create sustainable employment."

What An Accomplishment!
Coming up this weekend! The doors of FORT CAMDEN will open to the public for the first time this Saturday 4th September at 12.00pm.

This was a post from Englishmix ~ I didn't realize that I had posted twice on the same subject and hope this is OK with everyone to combine the posts; must be burning that midnight oil too much!

Fascinating news. I have shared it with my parents, who are planning another UK tour, this time going to Ireland as well as Scotland. Thanks.

It is totally fascinating; if you have a chance go the the Ft Camden Facebook site; it shows the work, step by step; I am so very proud to be a distant part of this with a link to Skully.

Your parents are very lucky to travel; my plans totally disappeared this last Monday, lost me job; plans were IrelandScotland September 2011, not now!

Check out the pcs on Skully's sites, you will be amazed in the two finished room; The Museum Room and The Gallery Room; you will be in awe!
