At the urging of our sons, the wife and I have finally begun a consistent time of working out daily on our elliptical machine. It's been going great, but here's a question.

I hear varying opinions on this, so I thought I would turn to our illustrious forum for counsel. What is the best time of day to do the workout? I know any workout is better than no workout at all, but we want to try and get the most from what we do.

We have been doing it right upon getting up in the morning before breakfast. One of my sons says this is not best since it can decrease muscle by working out without eating first.

In recent days, because of my busy schedule, I have worked out later in the day, sometimes in the afternoon and sometimes at night before bed. I always wait a couple of hours or so after eating so as not to cramp up.

So there you have it! I am open to your thoughts on the matter! Thanks and have a great day!

Hi haynes9 I've always heard working out in the morning- after eating protein. Then after eat carbs, and protein. The A.M. will burn more calories as your up and moving around as opposed to sleeping. I used to exercise in the afternoon, but I would have a hard time sleeping. I could be wrong and I'm curious to what others say. Great question.

Like you say anytime is better than nothing. Glad to hear your working out. Let us know how it goes.

I've heard that, too, Rindy. So many different ideas, though! I like going first thing in the morning, but my schedule has gotten messed up and it's usually around 8:00 PM now!

It's going well for both the wife and me. I am putting a bit more resistance on our machine for me to make it tougher. So far, so good. I'm not setting any world records, but I am going about four miles and burning about 300 calories. Not a bad start for a "seasoned" fellow like myself! wink.gif

I generally work out in the morning or on my days off, before noon. Most advice I have read has been not to work out too late in the day or it will effect your sleep, but I figure, establishing a steady work out habit will do more good irregardless of the time period.

I PT in the morning, so I would offer the suggestion of doing it in the morning. If you are worried about having something in your stomach before working out, grab a energy bar, that is what I do. Hope this helps!
