'round these parts it ain't bears(tho there are a few black bears) or cats you have to watch out for

but HOGS!!!

Heya Sweet Rindy! How ya been? Loooong time no see(I'll try to do better!)

check this out:

Physician attacked by wild hog
By Elizabeth Billips [email protected]

It was his last cartridge and his last hope.

The 192-pound wild boar had already gored Dr. Joseph "Larry" Jackson Sr. twice and had him right where it wanted him.

It had all happened in a whirlwind ... the quick tremble of leaves in the thicket, the scrape of tusks and teeth against his rifle. Dr. Jackson slid the cartridge into the magazine, knowing a movement too quick would probably be his last. Blood was already puddling around him.

The hog locked its eyes on the downed physician and lowered its head to strike again.

The Fourth of July had actually started off nicely for the 64-year-old Waynesboro physician. It was just after sunrise when he and hunting buddy J.R. Rountree spotted the big black hog inside a pasture at Old Town Plantation in Jefferson County.

Dr. Jackson took a shot and heard the bullet hit tough hide. But it missed its mark by an inch, and the hog ran off along the fence line and out of sight. Rountree went back for the truck while Dr. Jackson took off through the pasture on foot.

The hog hunkered down in a thicket no bigger than a compact car, and when the doctor came into sight, it charged.

"I fired from my hip and just missed," Dr. Jackson recalls from the leather recliner in his living room. "He took my feet out from under me and was on top of me."

The hog backed off and charged again, this time burying a tusk in the doctor's arm. He used his Remington as a club and managed to hold back the hog's head as it drove into him again and again. A pair of binoculars blocked a blow to his gut. "These saved me from having my belly ripped open," he says, running a finger along deep scrapes above the lenses.

When the hog backed off again, he knew it was his last chance.

"I didn't want to make any quick, sudden motions," Dr. Jack- son explains, remembering how the hog stared straight at him as he reloaded his rifle and eased the barrel around. As the boar lowered his head to attack again, he squeezed a pointblank shot into its chest. "I never felt any pain, and I was never afraid," he says. "I was just trying to fight for my life."

As the boar went down, the doctor realized how badly he was hurt. "I could see I was spurting blood so I knew I had a problem," he recalls. He used his good hand to keep pressure on the gash until Rountree arrived with the truck. "I lost three pints right there on the ground … another three minutes and I would have been dead."

His friend had heard the shots but didn't suspect trouble until he rounded the bend. "JR knew something was wrong then," Dr. Jackson says, noting the whole attack was over and done within minutes. "He said he'd never seen a hunter and hog on the ground at the same time."

Rountree rushed Dr. Jackson to the emergency room in Jefferson County where they learned the hog's tusk had severed the artery in his arm and sliced through three tendons. Unbeknownst to the doctor, the boar's tusk had also pushed through his boot and severed his calf muscle. "It looked like a cherry bomb went off in there," he says, glancing at his thickly bandaged leg. It took orthopedic and vascular surgeons at University Hospital in Augusta nearly four hours to repair the damage and close up the jagged wounds.

Dr. Jackson hobbles to his gun safe and pulls out his trusted Remington. "It was a hell of a fight … a fight to the death," he says, pointing to the bite marks and scratches along the barrel. "One of us wasn't coming out of there alive."

He returns to his recliner, sporting a deep tan and athletic shorts. He looks himself, despite the cuts and lumps and the perfect purple hoof mark imprinted in his thigh.

He says Rountree returned for the hog and will soon deliver packages of bacon, sausage and cubed steak. There will be a skull mount arriving soon too, complete with the razor teeth and four-inch tusks that came so close to taking his life.

Dr. Jackson points up the wall where it will likely hang, recalling the flash of black and the white stripe across the boar's shoulder. "I will always remember that pink eye staring right at me," he says.

I'd say the doc is a very lucky man.

This happened about a hundred miles east of me. When I first moved down here six years ago the area was infested with wild or feral hogs. A friend got me into hunting them tho I actually shot several here in my own yard! They were walking up in broad daylight and eating my pecans-GRRRR!
One instance I'll never forget happened late one night whilst he and I were hunting. I, for some reason(like a a dumb@ss) had decided to walk around a bit. I slowly walked down along a hedgerow to the end and stopped. I was hoping to see one feeding as it was a rather moonlit night. Oh, FWIW it's been legal to hunt hogs at night here for some time. They have gotten so bad that the state DNR is now allowing them to be hunted day or night, all year round, lights are allowed and you can even hunt them over bait! Anyway, I stood there for a bit and after seeing nothing I started to walk back to the camp. About halfway back all of a sudden a hog shot out of the hedgerow running at full tilt about 15 feet behind me! Scared me so bad I wasn't even able to raise my rifle and shoot at it before it made it across the small open field and into the woods.
That was close enough. From that point on you better believe I stayed either in the stand or in camp at night!

Rose dear, you rang? Here ah be's...
Yer a-beginnin' ta sound just like a sheCAD fer sure (I warned ye, didn I?-LOL!) And if'n ye ever gets ta see 'em live-yer a goner! Just ask Gwen... you have got to get yer hiney over here and see 'em at least once(or twice!-LOL)

So Gwen, were you there by yerself or with someone else? Was that yer first CAD experience? I only wish I could have stayed for the jam session afterwards-I know I missed some great music-but I was so drained from the heat and all, ah wuz feelin' a bit prostrated-near 'bout heatstroked even. I've e-mailed the Culloden people to see if CAD'll be back this year-(I've even asked a CAD member too)-but gotten no response as of yet-(oh gawd please don' let it be so hot this year!!!) If they make it, I hope to see ya there!

Heath-from what I hear, all their albums are stunning. (is it possible to wear out CD's?) I've got Keep It Tribal, Tribal Eyes, and Tribal Waves(the live album). And I plan to aquire all the rest as soon as I make it to their very next gig...

Sweet Rindy is right-Tribal Waves, being a live show, is definitely one album to have. Have you seen 'em live? (love yer avatar too)

Sadly, Tu-bard and Davy have now left the group-it apparently happened shortly after Culloden. I tried to engage TB in conversation that day but he was in no mood. They shall both be missed-especially TB's oh-so-powerful visual presence. But from what I gather talkin' to their REALLY hard-core fans over on the forums at their website, the two new fellers(Aya and Kyle) have really taken up the slack. Or at least, they are very popular wid da lassies anyways...LOL!

As to this years shows, so far they have announced that they will be at Gatlinburg TN. May 20, 21, and 22. Glasgow KY on June 2, 3, 4, and 5. We're all hoping for them to make Loch Norman but it doesn't look like it'll happen. But, they will be at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games July 7,8,9, and 10! woo-HOO!!!! From what I hear, this is THE SHOW and you best be there or be square... Other dates are pending-I would love to catch 'em at Murfreesboro too(if they make it). Seems their fame is growing by leaps and bounds-as well it should be.

I'm actually thinkin' of buyin' a tent and becoming a bona-fide CADhead-I wanna follow them around from show to show just like the Deadheads follow the Grateful Dead around. I only wish I could make a show or two in Scotland! I could die happy fer sure.

So anybody else wanna join me in this adventure?

Hi Mac. Thanks for the help. Have gotten L365 to work now but still having problems with Winamp. Hard to explain but... I'll get 8-10 seconds of music via L365 and then I hear it repeated via Winamp. I say it's Winamp as the quality is much better the second time. Have redownloaded WA and the MP3 plug-in.
What next?

Also, can I just send you $12 direct?(I hate Paypal)

Yes, I know it's been a while since I was here. Remodeling and all. So, imagine this: everything worked fine last time I was here, nothing(AFAIK) has been changed. Clicked on L365 link to bring up music(using Winamp) and WTH? It's like, the record player should be playing at 78 but it's only playing at less than speed 1! What is going on? Can't find any problem info that is even close to this. Have now tried everything I know. Am I just not destined to listen here anymore or what?

Hi Rose!

How are you? Well I hope. Yes, I know I haven't been here in a while-life has been in quite an uproar lately(a hermit's nightmare LOL!) but just dropped in to say that I recently purchased the Winter Storm III CD and just plain love it!

In corresponding with the fine gentleman handling my purchase, I informed him how I happened to find out about the CD and suggested he might forward the other two CDs-Winter Storm I (more piping) and WS II (more drums) on to CRN. He replied that he most definitely would!!

So hopefully we can all look for more of Winter Storm to be here soon-woohoo!

Take care,

Greg

Hello all.

Still quite the newbie here but have been wanting talk about this all week.

Got to see them at a small Highland Games last Sunday-absolutely awesome show as usual-but best of all...

they were selling copies of both their two new CDs!

Tribal Waves -recorded live
(my only complaint is it's not a double album!)

and

Tribal Eyes- their newest release that is simply fantastic.

I got them both and have been attempting to wear them out since I got home...

more good news: a live DVD will be released soon!

If you ever get the chance-go see this group!!!

Rose, you have got to be kidding me-I grew up in Mableton! Wow, this is un-believable! We lived there from when I was just a wee dink on up until the mid-80s. This is just weird or something. I have about a thousand questions Id love to ask you but... better not here.

Have you been back lately? I haven't in several years but even when I did go it certainly had changed a lot from what I remember. Still have some close friends in and around there.

I used to play electric bass years ago. Was also in school bands playing trumpet, trombone, tuba, etc.,. Was never really good at any of them so now just listening is about it.

I wish they'd had the DVD at the show. That would have given me enough reason to finally buy a player! You know how contrary us hermits can be laugh.gif

Waterhouse, eh? Not familiar, but I like him now biggrin.gif

I'm still getting a few dropouts but I suspect it's the MickeyMouse phone company we have here. Aggravating but what can you do?

Oh, hope you don't mind but I took a peek at yer pic. Wow! fox.gif thumbs_up.gif
Rather nice for a hermit, if I may say so...

take care,

MacFive,
you may wish to start a new thread on this:

Clann An Drumma has released two new albums!

Tribal Eyes

and best of all,

Tribal Ways -their new live CD

I purchased them both last Sunday at the Highland games where they were perfoming in Culloden GA and all I can say is WOW!!!! They just keep getting better-both in the studio and on stage.... hope you can get both of these soon!

Aye ye bonnie lass, I just knew you had good taste! And of course, great minds always think alike! wub.gif Really, either of the new ones would be a great choice. I so wish they were available here on CRN. And the first and second albums are just as good. Of course, I'm not biased in the least. biggrin.gif

Tribal Eyes is their newest and it's just plain fantastic and their new live album-Tribal Waves-is made up of both older and newer songs with all that raw power they're so famous for when performing live. I suppose it's my favorite but only by a wee bit. I simply lack the vocabulary to adequately describe either one. A hearty hermit thumbs up for both! thumbup.gif
Oh yeah, they also told me they have a live DVD coming out soon!

This was the second time I've seen them. The first time was little over a year ago in WV. They just flat blew me away!!!! I have been hooked ever since that day. Then, right after I moved to GA last May, I learned via a local newspaper that I had just missed seeing them at a Highland Games right up the road in bonnie Culloden! GRRRR!!! furious.gif
So I have been waiting a year to see them again and it was well worth the wait-they even did TWO SHOWS!!!! Tu-bardh had some Native American friends show up during the second set and they danced along with him and then joined the the band on stage during the final song. I'm still speechless!!!
thumbup.gif notworthy.gif clap.gif notworthy.gif clap.gif notworthy.gif clap.gif thumbup.gif

That was where I also got to see Searson and Seven Nations-two totally different types of music from Children of the Drum-but both of which were excellent(and I'm only about 85 miles south of where 7N will be performing along with the Atlanta Symphony in July!!!). I had no idea how good nor how long 7N has been around.
Searson consists of a father, his three lovely daughters, and another bonnie young lass that really put on an excellent show. I just wish I would have been able to hang around for the jam session afterwards but.... it had been a miserably hot and long day and I was spent.

Things are much better since I've gone ahead and loaded WinAmp and while the audio quality is really great, I still have a few dropouts-but not as much AND much less audio ads and no pop-up ads(Ooops, I hope L365 doesn't see that). Guess I'll hang around a wee bit more...

Hi Rose. Yes, I'm still here. I guess I'm kinda weird as I like to listen to an entire CD until I like most everything on it.

Right now I like anything by Clan An Drumma but absolutely love their new live CD: Tribal Waves. Followed by anything on their other new one: Tribal Eyes
(got to see them last Sunday at a Highland Games and they were fantastic!!!)
Sadly, these two albums aren't on CRN-yet. If you ever get the chance-GO SEE THIS GROUP!!!

My other favorite CDs at the moment are:

Seven Nations- Seven Nations(duh) and like the songs God, Twelve and Seeds of Life the best
(they will be with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in July!!!)

Searson(wish they were on here too-send a CD in girls!)-House Party(two lassie fiddlers-WOO HOO!!!- another must see if ye ever get the chance)

Wicked Tinkers-Bangers for Breakfast

Winter Storm III- really like anything on The Pipes and Drums Concert
(goosebumps!)

Wolfstone- Almost an Island

a few other artists come to mind:

Runrig-most all I've heard

Natalie Macmaster-ditto

Slainte Mhath(how do you pronounce that? I got a LOT to learn-LOL)-'tis another ditto

Now that I'm so broken hearted to find out yer married(sniff)-I guess I'll be searching out Celtic blues- laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Thanks CelticRose. I couldn't sleep so I'm back. And thanks for your kind words. I've read a lot of your posts and you seem a very nice person even tho yer not a computer nerd(I'm not much of one either). I live so far out in the boonies I doubt I'll ever have broadband. Yes, I log on just as you describe. I'll be calling my ISP tomorrow, fer sure! But I doubt they will be much help. And yes, I'm hearing audio ads during the songs. I wonder if it's a ploy to get me to sign up and give them money. What makes it so bad is I stayed up untill sunrise yesterday with hardly any problems at all! While typing this up I tried L365 again and I'm still having lots of dropouts. It seems just a wee bit better, but... All I have up and running right now is it and this forum-nothing else. I guess I'll load up all my Clann An Drumma CDs in the player and just listen to them.

well... I may not stay here if tonight's experience keeps continuing...

Does L365 drop out and act like this a lot?

I mean, it's bad enough to have to hear audio ads in the middle of a song(odd that it never seems to drop out during them!!!!) but tonight it's just awful. I get to hear 8-10 seconds of a song in between dropouts lasting from 25-30 seconds all the way up to 2 full minutes! I have done everything I've found in these forums to try to help but it ain't working! This just plain sucks... Is it any better if you go the VIP route?

Sorry to dump this on you all but I'm just frustrated as hell right now

You guys are idiots lol.gif

Just joking (hee hee)

Nothing worse than i have done as an adult

Sticking my hand in a running lawn mower deck

hitting myself in the head with a running chain saw

Well, I must admit I too have a couple scars from a running lawnmower as a young lad but thankfully I always did have a healthy respect for running chainsaws laugh.gif
