I'm beginning to wonder some of my right-wing friends may be right--they think Mr. Obama is using every crisis to further centralize power and bankrupt the nation to allow a complete Marxist takeover. It's harder and harder to believe that his "mistakes" are the mark of someone truly lacking the experience needed for the job. Rather, I'm beginning to wonder whether he truly is hiding a Marxist agenda behind what otherwise appear to be foolish mistakes.
Destruction of the 1st Amendment would certainly be in accord with a Marxist agenda.

IMHO, Mr. Obama has disappointed just about everyone, including his ardent supporters.
The Republicans will need to make some major mistakes to lose the next Presidential election.

Instead of securing the border, US citizens are being warned to stay away from border areas.
Seems like the Obama administration has de facto given lare sections of our country back to Mexico.
Isn't the basic function of the Federal government to take responsibility for national defense, which by definition includes securing the borders.
Seems like major dereliction of duty to me.

Antwn,
You are totally right. Thank you for correcting the oversight. I should have included Wales and Scotland with the Irish when contrasting the insular Celts who kept much of their Celtic identity while the Celts living in what is now England pretty much lost their Celtic identity following the successive waves of Roman, Anglo-Saxon,, Viking, a nd Norman invasions, and now consider themselves English, not Celts.
My apologies for creating confusion by overlooking the Scots and Welsh (I must have been really tired at the tlime, given my own Scots heritage).

I noted with some interest that an RC-135 (on which I was a crewmember back in the late 60's) may have been involved in tracking down the perp. Of course, there's no way to confirm the story.

Catching Shahzad (Ears in the Sky Edition)

An RC-135 Rivet Joint SIGINT aircraft, on the ground in the Middle East. Did an airborne intelligence platform--like this one--participate in the search for Times Square bombing suspect Faisal Shahzad? (USAF photo)

Shortly after Times Square bombing suspect Faisal Shahzad was apprehended, various accounts began to circulate about how the authorities managed to track him down. One of the most intriguging appeared on the WCBS-TV website (and has since been removed). It suggested that intelligence assets were involved in tracing Shahzad's cell phone conversations.

As an example of how moronic the Feds can get when classifying folks by race/ethnicity/etc., I have a friend whose ancestry is largely Scots-Irish. However, because he was born in Cuba when his father was stationed there, he can legally classify himself as Hispanic even though he was only in Cuba for a few weeks immediately after his birth.

Wdorholt,

I'm most surprised by the 49% with a favorable impression of the IRS! Are you kidding me?!?!

Jillian

IIRC, the IRS percentage of favorable ratings is roughly comparable to the percentage of folks who don't pay income taxes. Context is important. angel_not.gif angel_not.gif

The Insular Celts are the Celts of the British Isles. The Celts were a diverse group of tribes with a common culture and language. It should be noted that it is unclear at what point the indigenous tribes of Great Britain acquired Celtic culture and language. DNA studies have shown a continuity of the same people living in the British Isles since shortly after the end of the last Ice Age. During the Bronze Age and/or Iron Age they acquired Celtic culture and language, even though there is no evidence for large-scale migration from the continent. In what is now England, the Celtic tribes (then known as Britons--they did not refer to themselves as Celts) first became Romano-Britons, after the Roman conquest, then they became Anglo-Saxon (after the poorly-documented Anglo-Saxon conquest), then Anglo-Norman, then English. In the process, the English lost much or most of their Celtic heritage and are no longer considered Celts.
Because the Irish resisted foreign occupation far longer than other Celtic peoples and never became "Anglicized" even after being conquered by the English, they have retained far more of their Celtic identity than other peoples with a Celtic heritage.

I use a nasal pillow mask with my CPAP. It basically just covers my upper lip and directs the air into my nose. It's considerably less obtrusive than the mask that covers your nose and mouth.

I had a sleep study in early 2007. Exact procedure no doubt varies from one center to another, but in my case once the sensors were all attached my movements were fairly restricted.
The results were fairly dramatic. I did not sleep more than 2 minutes before I stopped breathing and woke up. I was getting no REM sleep at all. After being hooked up to a CPAP, I immediately went into two hours of REM sleep.

One more thing about health care. According to ABC news, the deficit is now a record $1.27 trillion. It would be smart to postpone the entire legislation for financial reasons alone. That would make everyone happy (except Obama) temporarily. In the meantime, it would give Congress time to really hash out a workable plan, and respond to the people's concerns.

It's almost as though BHO is taking lessons from the tyrants in Iran who are trying to control internet access as a means of stifling dissent.
People who wonder how Nazi Germany happened only need to look at what's happening in the US now.

Let's see. The fall of Rome (during which the people were provided bread and circuses) took about 100 years. Can't help but wonder whether our current "leaders" are trying to cause our fall much more quickly.

I'm in the 65 or over group that is not on the list to receive the swine flu vaccine due to probably already having immunity, but cannot help recalling the last time a vaccine was rushed out to prevent an epidemic. IIRC, the vaccine caused more problems than the flu did.

Mr. Cronkite made his liberal views very clear after his retirement. For a contrary view on how his statements regarding the Tet offensive started broadcast news down the road to today's activist (i.e., liberal) journalism, see the World News Daily, which states that:
QUOTE
In 1989, Cronkite spoke to a dinner organized by People for the American Way, a group founded by Norman Lear. His candid politics surprised even that audience.

    * "I know liberalism isn't dead in this country," he said. "It simply has, temporarily we hope, lost its voice."

    * "About the Democratic loss in this election ... it was not just a campaign strategy built on a defensive philosophy. It was not just an opposition that conducted one of the most sophisticated and cynical campaigns ever. ... It was the fault of too many who found their voices stilled by subtle ideological intimidation."

    * "We know that unilateral action in Grenada and Tripoli was wrong. We know that Star Wars means uncontrollable escalation of the arms race. We know that the real threat to democracy is half a nation in poverty. ... We know that religious beliefs cannot define patriotism. ... God Almighty, we've got to shout these truths in which we believe from the housetops. Like that scene in the movie 'Network,' we've got to throw open our windows and shout these truths to the streets and the heavens. And I bet we'll find more windows are thrown open to join the chorus than we'd ever dreamed possible."

In 1999, he appeared at the United Nations to accept the Norman Cousins Global Governance Award from the World Federalists Association. He told those assembled, including Hillary Rodham Clinton, that the first step toward achieving a one-world government – his personal dream – is to strengthen the United Nations.
