Thank you very much for your loyal support! It is much appreciated. We are up to about 367 CDs given away over the past several years. That does not include when we had a more manual system, we have probably found homes for these CDs maybe 1,500.

We should be starting our fund raising event soon this month. We have a new hard cover book on Celtic Castles that is surely going to sell out fast and some other cool packages. Hopefully will have up soon for added selections!

Thank you again!

AULD LANG SYNE

In celebration of the New Year we will be playing 8 hours of Auld Lang Syne by the immortal Robert Burns. Tune in on Highlander Radio to hear this Robert Burns festival of his most famous poem and have a Happy New Year!

So you don't understand the Lyrics?

We twa hae ran about the braes,
And pu’d the gowans fine,
But we’ve wander’d monie a weary fit
Sin’ auld lang syne.

Then read on...

The end of a year often signals new beginnings – gym memberships and dating apps see an uncharacteristic surge in sign ups – but one thing that has never, and will unlikely change, is Robert Burns’ Auld Lang Syne. It’s pretty much accepted that most don’t know all the lyrics, but does anyone really know what they mean either? Here is a breakdown of each verse and chorus in the original 18th century Scots along with its translation.

Yes Virginia...

Eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York's Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history's most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.

A stunning collection of classic tunes, performed by a talented, passionate ensemble of quality musicians.

It’s that time again! As we get closer and closer to Christmas, there is always room for more holiday-themed songs in my playlists. I’ve always been a big fan of how Celtic music intertwines with Christmas vibes. It is almost as if the ancestral, timeless feel of folk music has something in common with the spirit of these holidays, and there is something special about this combination. With their most recent release, The Selkie Girls did an amazing job at capturing this very special feeling....

TRAVEL MUGS

If you are looking for a unique gift for that someone special, consider one of our Coat of Arms products in the Celtic Radio Online Store.

Our newest product is the white steel travel mug. We also offer silver steel travel mugs, but the new white steel provides for 100% full color Coat of Arms. The silver steel travel mug does balance with the steel making for a lighter design. Both products are great gifts.

An example:

HERALDRY CONSULTING

The Coat of Arms image above was actually created using a photograph of an old silver badge of the arms from the 1800s. The customer could not find this Coat of Arms anywhere using a number of online services, so we recreated the image using a photograph of the old artifact:

This is a low resolution image, we offer Coat of Arms images up to 6 feet in height. Great for banners, flags or posters.

We offer free Heraldry Consulting if you are interested in uncovering your family's Coat of Arms. We can research your family name and also recreate any Coat of Arms from old photographs or pictures.

Two of our channels will be changing very soon from SonixCast to TorontoCast. This will bring all of our channels under the umbrella of TorontoCast.

Ye Old Celtic Pub & Celtic-Rock-Radio should be updated very soon, so just be sure you are using the right tune in links on our website, mobile or App or you might hear just silence! smile.gif

These channels are going to be using a different system for streaming called IceCast - it is very similar to Shoutcast, but it is open source. In fact, it can emulate shoutcast and perform a whole bunch of other features which we will need to learn about.

For you the listener, no worries - the links will be updated very soon and there is nothing more you need to do.

This is the perfect time for us to "try" out IceCast for our broadcast servers since ShoutCast appears to be moving towards an advertisement model and while in-stream advertising with them is currently optional, we want to have a solution available in the event it becomes mandatory. IceCast is Open Source and does not have any advertising built into it. So we might be exploring this option more in the future!

UPDATE

Android listening for the APP has been restored for Highlander Radio, Celtic Moon, Celtic Christmas and Salty Dog Radio. It might be another day before it returns for Celt-Rock Radio, Ye Ol Celtic Pub and A Celtic Christmas channels.

Listening on all our channels remains available for web-based, iPhones, Windows, Kindle.

Thanks for your patience.

Just a quick note and an apology to our members who use the Celtic Radio Network App for listening on Android devices or commonly called "Google Play Store".

An update to the App has broken listening for Android members. If you see an update to the App do not update until you check this thread or receive a push notification on your device that it is ok to update.

Google is requiring all streams to be HTTPS compliant and our providers are working on those new URLs, but it is going to take a few days. We will post a notice on this thread once the stations are working once again on Android devices.

Web, Mobile, Apple, Windows and Kindle continue to work fine.

HISTORY OF THANKSGIVING

In September 1620, after panicking about leaking ships and provisioning problems that had necessitated stops in Southampton, Dartmouth and Plymouth, the Pilgrims bid a final farewell to England. By November they had become grave-robbers. William Bradford, the future governor of the English colony of Plymouth on the east coast of North America, wrote one of the few surviving accounts of the voyage and life in present-day Massachusetts

The colonists needed all the help they could get. Having arrived too late to plant crops, cut down trees and build sufficient housing, they spent the winter on board the Mayflower. Several weeks after they anchored, Bradford’s wife, Dorothy, “fell overboard” and drowned. Most historians think that she took her own life rather than live to face the rigors of the future...

HIGHLAND GAMES

Outlander is back for another season and it is not failing to disappoint with every episode. This week's episode will be near and dear to all those that enjoy the sights, sounds, food and drinks of the Scottish Highland Games.

Weaving into the story a 1960s Highland Game filmed at Pollack Park is just brilliant. And for anyone accustom to all of the traditions and events of the Games, you will be yearning to schedule a visit to your local Highland Games as soon as possible. From the Calling of the Clans, the Caleigh, Bagpipers, Tossing of the Caber and of course the Celtic music - it was all so very well done for Episode 3 of Season 4 for Outlander. We will definitely be watching this episode again to catch anything that we missed.

Which brings up a very good point. Scottish Culture and Highland Games are really enjoying a comeback and renewed interest everywhere. Call it a Renaissance! Starting with Disney's Scottish Princess movie (Merida), Game of Thrones Actors making appearances at the Games, the 2018 Netflix Movie Outlaw King and the millions of viewers that are enjoying the Outlander series.

So, it is no better time for you to consider attending a Highland Games! You don't need to be Scottish though - if you have a fine appreciation for drink, food and music then you will fit right in!

"If you’ve ever been to a Scottish Highland Games event or are contemplating one, this list’s for you. Kilts, food & whisky aplenty, live entertainment, occasional celebrity sightings and more, these events held around the world provide a fantastic venue for connecting to your Scottish roots (ancestral or acquired) and fellow Scots-obsessed pals."

Read more from the Outlander Cast website for the top ten reasons to Attend a Scottish Highland Game.

That is a great suggestion. Right now we are thinking about our new site which is a very longs way off in development.

Some thoughts to bring the App and the Website in line better would be to have the login for the website be the email address. There still would be a member name.

But if the two were sync'd up we could have the passwords sync'd too.

About the App - we are supporting the App even more now that we have gone on to a dedicated plan for the App developers that will see us having a dedicated manager handle all updates, upgrades and to make the App function on all mobile devices. While it is was a little pricey to gain this dedicated support for our App - it will benefit our listeners for a more stable and functioning App.

So thank you Celtic Radio Founder's that make this possible!

HOW TO THROW A MEDIEVAL FEAST

Imagine that you are a master chef, working for a celebrity who wants to throw a wedding dinner for their daughter, with 200–300 guests. Next imagine that you have no electricity – no refrigerators, no freezers, no light – and no gas. Your suppliers have to get everything to you fresh, and you don’t want to use salted meat for this important occasion.

You are not sure exactly how much of any ingredient you will need until very close to the day. What’s more, the guests may stay on for several days. Among them there will be vegetarians or people needing special diets. To top this all off, the only transport available is horse and cart, so nothing can be brought at the last minute.

ANGLO-SAXON KINGDOMS

A new exhibition has opened at the British Library in London - "Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms: Art, Word, War." Billed as a "once in a generation exhibition," it promises to show off not only the exceptional collection in the British Library itself but also treasures now housed elsewhere - in England or further afield in Europe.

The premise of the show is the world of the Anglo-Saxons, a period of roughly 600 years, stretching from the early 5th century CE when Roman troops officially left the British Isles and groups of Germans began to move in, to about 1066 CE when Duke William of Normandy defeated King Harald II Godwinson and took the crown for himself.

Did you know we speak German?

The West Germanic languages include the three most widely spoken Germanic languages: English with around 360-400 million native speakers; German, with over 100 million native speakers; and Dutch, with 24 million native speakers.

Never knew that English was actually German? Read more from Why English is a Germanic Language.

Outlaw King is now playing on Netflix, so be sure to grab a private viewing!

So from what I understand the original movie is 4 hours long and it has been trimmed down for the Toronto Film Festival and then trimmed down again for Netflix to about 1 hour 37 minutes.

I really hope they release the full directors cut of the movie.

In other news about the movie, we heard from Tu-Bardh from Clanadonia tonight and he provided us with this link from Edinburgh Castle where they performed for the Scottish First Minister at the premier and Chris Pine. Thank you Tu-Bardh for that link!
