We have just finished off the final version of our site-wide proverbs which are focused on Gaelic Proverbs (with translation) and on Scot Proverbs. This involved inserting all of these proverbs (over 600) into a database on our CelticRadio.net server.

Where to find them:

The community forum shows a Gaelic Proverb and the English translation everytime you load the page.

Our community home page:

http://www.celticradio.net/php/index.php

Contains a new INFO box called "Proverb of the Moment." This contains both a random Gaelic Proverb and a random Scots Proverb.

Enjoy! thumbs_up.gif

Thank you so much for these, Paul. I have really enjoyed reading them. Did they come from Nicholson's Gaelic proverbs? I've been wanting this book for a long time. Maybe for Christmas... smile.gif

I love the way they turn over with each screen change. Thanks so much! Maybe it would be good to use some of them to make a little "analysis of the day" thread to show the grammar points. Proverbs and sayings are so often little capsules of idiomatic usage that goes beyond the stiff textbook style. What do you think, Wiz?

I just saw a proverb that I really liked. I liked both the way it looked as well as its meaning

Tuigidh bean bean eile.

Literally, this means

Will understand a woman a woman other

Or, in regular English,

A woman will understand another woman.

Any comments?

Yeah: ain't THAT the truth!!!

However let me say this: Mac, from your original post it souns like you had to do at least some of the "inserting" of the proverbs into the database by hand. Given about a day, I can whip together a program to convert from one format to another. If yuo run into anything else that needs to be added to the database, let me know and I'll gladly compile a converter for you.
