Looking at the previous idea here I think I have another "random occurence" that would add an interesting twist to the game.
When your sending an army(s) to attack someone, there should be a random chance that "something" would slow them down or stop them altogether, (thus making it harder to accurately predict arrival times by both sides). In reality, when a two or three month long march took place things like the weather and other natural obstacles would regularly cause setbacks. Several battles throughout history have been won by one side having that slight advantage, (the weather turning in their favor, etc.). I think it would be quite natural to have some kind of mechanic like this in the game.
