Here's the place for us Canadians to cheer on the home team.

TIME TO KICK SOME OLYMPIC PATOOTEY CANADA

user posted image

Who else was a mess watching the opening ceremonies last night? That poem by Shane Koyczan was bone chilling. And of course, the East Coast tribute was INSANE! 180 dancing fiddlers on the floor with six feature performers on the main stage.

I missed the opening ceremonies last night as I had an emergency in the building. Our brand new boilers decided they were taking the night off. Hope I can catch a replay to-day. According to what I saw on the news Canada is predicted to win the most medals with 27 (5 Gold) got my fingers crossed. We are the Best.

I'm going to wait, I guess, to find an actual VIDEO clip of the opening ceremonies. I'm sorry for not viewing it before posting, as I was waiting for the video to load when I typed it out.

Camac, at least you can read this transcript of Shane's piece, 'We Are More'. king.gif

We Are More

by Shane Koyczan

When defining Canada

you might list some statistics

you might mention our tallest building

or biggest lake

you might shake a tree in the fall

and call a red leaf Canada

you might rattle off some celebrities

might mention Buffy Sainte-Marie

might even mention the fact that we've got a few

Barenaked Ladies

or that we made these crazy things

like zippers

electric cars

and washing machines

when defining Canada

it seems the world's anthem has been

" been there done that"

and maybe that's where we used to be at

it's true

we've done and we've been

we've seen

all the great themes get swallowed up by the machine

and turned into theme parks

but when defining Canada

don't forget to mention that we have set sparks

we are not just fishing stories

about the one that got away

we do more than sit around and say "eh?"

and yes

we are the home of the Rocket and the Great One

who inspired little number nines

and little number ninety-nines

but we're more than just hockey and fishing lines

off of the rocky coast of the Maritimes

and some say what defines us

is something as simple as please and thank you

and as for you're welcome

well we say that too

but we are more

than genteel or civilized

we are an idea in the process

of being realized

we are young

we are cultures strung together

then woven into a tapestry

and the design

is what makes us more

than the sum total of our history

we are an experiment going right for a change

with influences that range from a to zed

and yes we say zed instead of zee --- (*I loved that part* biggrin.gif )

we are the colours of Chinatown and the laughter of Little Italy

we dream so big that there are those

who would call our ambition an industry

because we are more than sticky maple syrup and clean snow

we do more than grow wheat and brew beer

we are vineyards of good year after good year

we reforest what we clear

because we believe in generations beyond our own

knowing now that so many of us

have grown past what used to be

we can stand here today

filled with all the hope people have

when they say things like "someday"

someday we'll be great

someday we'll be this

or that

someday we'll be at a point

when someday was yesterday

and all of our aspirations will pay the way

for those who on that day

look towards tomorrow

and still they say someday

we will reach the goals we set

and we will get interest on our inspiration

because we are more than a nation of whale watchers and lumberjacks

more than backpacks and hiking trails

we are hammers and nails building bridges

towards those who are willing to walk across

we are the lost-and-found for all those who might find themselves at a loss

we are not the see-through gloss or glamour

of those who clamour for the failings of others

we are fathers brothers sisters and mothers

uncles and nephews aunts and nieces

we are cousins

we are found missing puzzle pieces

we are families with room at the table for newcomers

we are more than summers and winters

more than on and off seasons

we are the reasons people have for wanting to stay

because we are more than what we say or do

we live to get past what we go through

and learn who we are

we are students

students who study the studiousness of studying

so we know what as well as why

we don't have all the answers

but we try

and the effort is what makes us more

we don't all know what it is in life we're looking for

so keep exploring

go far and wide

or go inside but go deep

go deep

as if James Cameron was filming a sequel to The Abyss

and suddenly there was this location scout

trying to figure some way out

to get inside you

because you've been through hell and high water

and you went deep

keep exploring

because we are more

than a laundry list of things to do and places to see

we are more than hills to ski

or countryside ponds to skate

we are the abandoned hesitation of all those who can't wait

we are first-rate greasy-spoon diners and healthy-living cafes

a country that is all the ways you choose to live

a land that can give you variety

because we are choices

we are millions upon millions of voices shouting

" keep exploring... we are more"

we are the surprise the world has in store for you

it's true

Canada is the "what" in "what's new?"

so don't say "been there done that"

unless you've sat on the sidewalk

while chalk artists draw still lifes

on the concrete of a kid in the street

beatboxing to Neil Young for fun

don't say you've been there done that

unless you've been here doing it

let this country be your first-aid kit

for all the times you get sick of the same old same old

let us be the story told to your friends

and when that story ends

leave chapters for the next time you'll come back

next time pack for all the things

you didn't pack for the first time

but don't let your luggage define your travels

each life unravels differently

and experiences are what make up

the colours of our tapestry

we are the true north

strong and free

and what's more

is that we didn't just say it

we made it be.

Canadians set a national record, with over 13 million watching opening ceremonies, and 78% of the country watching day 1!

VANCOUVER, Feb. 13 /CNW/ - Live coverage of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony Friday night by Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium has made history as the most-watched television event ever in Canadian history. On average, 13.3 million Canadians were watching every single minute of the 3.5 hour ceremony. The figure eclipses the previous record-holder, the Gold Medal hockey game at Salt Lake City 2002 (10.3 million), by 29%. Airing live across 11 television networks in 11 languages, an astonishing 23 million viewers, or two in every three Canadians (69%), tuned in to some part of the ceremony.

A total of 26 million Canadians, representing 78% of the population, experienced the 2010 Winter Games on the platforms of Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium yesterday, according to the Consortium's CUME (Canadian Unique Multimedia Engagement) index.

Previous Opening Ceremony Audiences:
------------------------------------
Calgary 1988: 4.24 million (CTV & TVA)*
Salt Lake City 2002: 3.99 million (CBC & SRC)*
Beijing 2008: 1.64 million (CBC & SRC)(xx)
Turin 2006: 1.18 million (CBC & SRC)(xx)

"The Canadian Olympic team will break records at these Games," said Ivan Fecan, President and Chief Executive Officer, CTVglobemedia and Chief Executive Officer, CTV Inc. "But, the first record was broken last night."

Detailed Day 1 audience breakdown to follow.

I see that the issue of not enough French being spoken at the opening ceremonies is still causing a bit of a stir. Canada is a bilingual country with both French and English as it's official languages. I personally do not speak French, that is the type of French that one would use in polite company. What French I learned I learned working construction so there is a alot of "merde" and "tabernac" in it. When I went to school in the late 40's and 50's Canada was predominately English and in order for anyone to get a decent job that was the language you had to speak. French was not taught in Ontario schools except in some Highschools where it was an option and very few in my Highschool chose it. In those days the French were second class citizens and as such were subject to many wrongs. In the neighbourhood I grew up in they were referred to as "Frogs, Frenchies, and Peasoupers" with the usual adjectives attached. My ex is half Quebecois and half English and she grew up in a family where her Father forbade French to be spoken so it wasn't until she went to Highschool that she started to learn the language. Thankfully those days are gone, long gone. I envy my fellow Canadians who can speak both our official languages, gives them an advantage that I and my generation don't have and I am thankful that both my girls learned it also.

I didn't see the opening ceremonies in Vancouver I don't know how much French was used but if it is as reported then it was a shameful ommission on the part of the organizers. Promises have been made that the closing ceremonies will include more French, after all it is also the official Language of the Olympics, and hopefully everyone will be satisfied. So my fellow countrymen and women "Vive l'Canada".

How'd the mens' hockey team do today biggrin.gif ?

Posted by: Camac 22-Feb-2010, 06:58 AM
I gave up watching Hockey years ago and last night proved my decission right. I watched the 1st period then turned the TV off in disgust. Personally I think it should have been the Canadian Women's Team that played the Yanks. Then we would have won. I know the game doesn't mean elimination but there is Pride you know. It's our Game. The Americans just simply out skated and out played us and had a hot goalie. First skirmish to the Yanks in the Border War.

I'm glad I missed it. Frankly, I didn't have much hope for the men's team after barely squeezing by Switzerland in a shoot-out.

As I said I gave up watching Hockey years ago when the NHL started expanding. Just wasn't the same game and watching that bunch of amatuer prima donnas called Team Canada was embarrasing to say the least.

Now the Women's Team, they play Hockey as it should be played. I think they are fantastic and the Gold is theirs. I figure we will be lucky to get Bronze in the men's.

It may be about time, but I hope it only stays as long as the Olympics. I'm proud and all, but it's juts not who we are to brag. When this is all over, I'll go back to loving Canada, and be happy when someone notices when we do something respectable, but leave it at that. Self-respect is about not needing the world's approval.

That said, we're doing awesome! Six Gold! Our athletes are doing us very proud.

For the first time since the late 70's I watch a men's hockey game and I have to admit that I was jumping up and down cheering us on. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also watched the end of the Women's Bobsled and saw our girls kick butt. As unlike us as it is we deserve to do some boasting and I don't think the PM will have to apologize to the world for our "Uncharacteristic Behaviour". It also seems that NBC"s Tom Brokaw explains Canada to America is very popular on Youtube and Twitter. My Stepdad had a saying "If it's Canadian, It has to be Good".

It may be in my dreams but winning the 14th Gold, although it would be great, is irrelevant as if I am correct the Country that has the most Gold (not most medals) wins the Olympics. If that is the case then #14 will be the icing on the cake.

Congratulations to our fine neighbors to the north on a beautiful Olympics!

Posted by: Camac 01-Mar-2010, 07:53 AM
Well it's all over but for 17 days we were at the centre of the Universe and it felt good. Now the quiet, restrained, polite people of the North will return to normal and in 6 months the world will have forgotten we are here. It's the way it is with Canada. We will go back to quietly working off stage doing the things we do best and what the world has come to expect from us, then something will occur and we will be thrust back into the limelight to enjoy another brief moment of Glory. "Only in Canada, EH" You will have noticed that in the closing ceremonies we took the opportunity to laugh at ourselves and remind everybody that we are a country full of R.C.M.P., Hockey Players, Beavers, Moose, Lumberjacks , and Maple Leafs, every Hollywood Stereotype ever put on film. For 17 days the whole country went out of character and now it's time to settle down and fade back into the background there to wait until the need arises again. In the words of those Famous Canadian Brothers "Take Off, Eh"

Camac.

Posted by: oldraven 03-Mar-2010, 09:22 AM
That was definitely the most enjoyment I've ever gotten out of the Olympics. And I believe it's the best Olympics for Canadians that will ever happen in my lifetime. I'm VERY proud to be a Canadian, and glad the world now gets to see why. Let this be a testament that multiculturalism CAN work, and a nation can thrive with it.

Hockey is our game. We did not 'kick-ass', we played hard, and were evenly matched by a number of other teams, and we managed to come out on top. That was honestly one of the best games of hockey I'd ever seen. 19 seconds left and the US ties it up? We did not whoop anyone, just won. And THAT is why I'm so proud of our Men's team. I'm proud of the Women's team too, but they won because they out-gunned everyone out there. The Men had to work hard for their Gold, and just barely got it. That's triumph.

As for those who feel there shouldn't be a Women's Hockey in the Olympics anymore, since it's so 'unfair', consider that Canada never did do all that well in the Olympics a decade ago. If you got beaten 8-0, get better. We obviously did. It sounds harsh, but it's the truth.

Posted by: Camac 03-Mar-2010, 10:29 AM
oldraven;

I have not watched an N.H.L. Hockey game since 1974 and even in the previous Olympics I only watched the Women's Team but I must confess that I had to watch the U.S. Canada final for Men's Gold. That was a supurb game and the U.S. really tested our mettle and I congratulate them for such a fine game. It is our game and I agree that it is far better to have to work to win than to obliterate an opponent by some outlandish score. The griping by the European members of the Hocky Federation about our Women's Team is sour Grapes. As you said our girls had to work hard to get to where they are and the Rest of the Teams should get off their duffs and work harder. It's great when we win but even that gets old after awhile.
As to being a proud Canadian, well that goes without saying. I am an adopted son of this land that I Love, it has been so good to me, given me everything and made me who I am asking little in return. Truly we are Blessed by the Gods.

You're going to enjoy it, then. Seriously, not one man on the ice took a half a second to breath in that game. No lazy loping down the ice like when they played Russia, it was hard sprinting and quick sticks from start to finish. At any moment, it could have been anyone's game. That's good Hockey!

With all the singing of our National Anthem during the Olympics Harper and his idiots are suggesting that a committee be formed to change the wording of O Canada to make it gender neutral. Seems some don't like the line "in all thy sons command" . There are far more important problems in the country than the words in our Anthem. Get on with the business of governing the those things "that ain't broke, don't fix".
