I piped a funeral Thursday, after which the A/V guy who was filming for the family wanted me to come back in to the sanctuary and record a couple of the tunes I'd played for the DVD he was making for the family. Here they are; MP3's of Ranger's Lament; funerary lament of the 2nd Bttn, Royal Irish Rangers, and the Irish Catholic funerary lament "Londonderry Air/Go Silent Friend/Danny Boy".

For once nobody asked for "Amazing Grace"...

Good deal, Emmet! I'll be sure and give a listen today!

Terrific Emmet!! I knew you were a piper, but haven't heard you until now. You are very talented!

By the way, I found the piper for Aaron's funeral. And yes, he played Amazing Grace. I'm sure, since I've played guitar all my life, that songs like Amazing Grace can become quite tiresome over time. The meaning of the song seems to convey exactly what a grieving person feels at a time of loss, and that is precisely why I had it played. Fortunately, my piper was there before and after the service, in the foyer, playing a variety of hymns for the guests. It was beautiful, and as memorable as anything that could have possibly been done.

The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

I'm glad that he was a comfort for your family during such a tragic time; of all of the things I do, that's the most important function I ever preform as a piper. You and your family remain in our prayers.
