What are the sounds you use for your computer, like startup and shutdown sounds?

Mine:

Startup:
Joshua (the computer) from WarGames: "Greetings, Professor Falken."

Shutdown:
Gregory (the new kid) from South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut: "Get lots of sleep. Tomorrow, we'll all be risking our lives for freedom."

Error:
Sgt. Hartman (the drill instructor) from Full Metal Jacket: "What is your major malfunction, numbnuts?"

Have silenced all of Windows annoying beeps, chimes, etc. and not replaced them. Silence is golden, except when I'm listening to Celtic Radio. wink.gif

I don't use Windows enough to care about startup/shutdown sounds anymore. But when last I did, I had a really nice thunderclap in my startup sound. I've sometimes thought of setting up a startup sound on my Linux box. never bothered to scrip it in though. I'd need a nice soundfile first biggrin.gif

Of course, it's also almost completely up and ready for login before the sound drivers ever get loaded.... Also, I should keep X startup quiet. I might be listening to mp3s or Highlander when I start X. I'm convinced I'd like nothing well enough to let it interrupt what I'm listening to. After all, that's one of the things I like about the new layout at www.quinlanroad.com. I adore Loreena's work, and I really like The Mummer's Dance, but a couple times I had to get really hasty to change the page because it started playing in the middle of something else I was listening to. I challenge you to try listening to two songs at once at equal volume and see how long it takes before you're either sick or turning it off. Lt. Cmdr. Data can do it, but he's a computer and can seperate them a little better than we can smile.gif

Go to "Control Panel" and click on "Sounds & Multimedia". Then, click on the "Sounds" tab. Scroll to the sounds you want to change and then click "Browse" to find the sound you want to use. Then click "OK" and then "Apply".

Question here, like your lord of the rings with Gandolf do you have to down load them from somewhere or what. I am such a computer idiot. I'm sorry. That would be neat to have. thumbs_up.gif

This is so fun. Not sure what I did but I shut my computer down after I put the files in my documents instead of the desk top and had to redo all of them. Guess I will just leave them on the desk top no biggie.

Thanks guys

Can you tell I'm a fan of "The Matrix" movies biggrin.gif ?

If I ever get a cell phone with voicemail, I may have what Keanu Reeves says at the end of the first movie as my outgoing message biggrin.gif .

Yes I can tell. I really liked the first one the best. Kind of like Lord Of The Rings. A lot of people didn't understand either movie. Very hard to try and explain to someone also. smile.gif I was going to do ring tones then found out my cell you have to have messages or something so I decided na.

OK, here are my new ones:

Startup:

From National Lampoon's Animal House:

Flounder: "Excuse me, sir. Is this the Delta house?"
Bluto: "Sure! Come on in!"

Shutdown:

Yosemite Sam: "Adios (long a), you chicken-pluckin' little stinker!"

Error:

Elmer Fudd: "There's something scwewwy goin' on here."

Mail:

The "Spam" song from Monty Python.

(my work computer only)

startup: (generic) "Thank you for pressing the self-destruct button. This ship will self-destruct in three seconds"

shut down (Marvin the Martian, i.e. Bugs Bunny): "Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth shattering kaboom!"

incoming e-mail (Worf, from Star Trek: the Next Generation): "Captain... incoming message!"

My home computer uses an assortment of sounds from http://homestarrunner.com/homester.html while my work has a variety of animal noises. A cow moo indicates I have an Instant Message, rooster crow is my new mail, crickets on shutdown and a lion roar greets me on startup but since I rarely ever shutdown or reboot, I don't hear the latter ones as much.

I used to have a clip from UHF as my error sound but you can only take having the computer scream "Stupid! YOU'RE SO STUUUPID!" at you so many times in a day. wink.gif

My Windows startup sound is the Dolby THX thingie (heard at the start of Star Wars movies).

Posted by: MDF3530 17-Feb-2005, 12:00 AM
I finally found a startup sound I was looking for!

I may give some of you a flashback to the 70's with this one...

"Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends/We're so glad you could attend/Come inside, come inside" -Emerson, Lake & Palmer

If any of you want it, give me your email address & I'll send it to ya!

Or, you can go to the Downloads section here (Community, then click on "Downloads"). It'll be under "Desktop Enhancements".

New sound files:

1. Startup- Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet in Mel Brooks' Star Wars parody, Spaceballs: "Ludicrous speed, GO!"

2. Mail- David Letterman & the CBS Orchestra: "Let's open up the CBS mailbag. Here we go! (band plays the mail song)"

3. Shutdown- Kathleen Freeman as Sister Mary Stigmata (aka "The Penguin") in The Blues Brothers: "And don't come back until you've redeemed yourselves!"

4. Beep- Howard Dean's scream.
