There's biodiesel and then there's biodiesel. Some sources show more promise of immediate and cost/effective alternatives. The following link: http://www.discover.com/issues/jul-04/feat...thing-into-oil/ details a plant in Missouri that will produce 500 barrels per day of "high quality fuel oil" from left over turkey parts. The plant is undergoing final testing now and is supposed to be on line this fall.
I've seen it as low as $1.60 in Indiana and Ohio in the last few weeks. I think that the decrease reflects sluggish sales and I can promise you that this is one demand driven commodity. I think what we need are a few health gas price wars. As long as no one is put out of business giving the big dogs an even bigger stranglehold on the market.

I saw as low as $1.66 near Toledo, OH, this past weekend. We made sure we filled up at those prices. We're still averaging between $1.75 and $1.80 in the Detroit area.

Normal is a relative term. For some reason it is not a term my relatives use to describe me.
Oh my Gosh!! We're still at $1.93 right now, down from $2.05 two weeks ago. (We're in Northeast Mass.) Wish we had your prices!

Electric cars have other problems besides the obvious ones of A/C, heat and mileage. One thing that's been in the news recently is the fact that in an accident, that electricity is a danger to passengers and rescuers.
Fuel cells are years away from being viable. Lots of problems with those as well.
Steam is high maintenance and dangerous as well.
Solar power is also years away from being a contender. Lots of work for little return at this point.
Biodiesel shows lots of promise, but little research is being done in this area.
Guess we're stuck with rising gas prices for now.
In the interest of alternative fuel sources, here is a link to a site you may find extremely interesting.

The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859
