Celtic Radio Community > Celtic Music > Name That Drum

My sister asked me last night, about a type of drum. For the life of me I can't think of the name. A small hand drum that I'm pretty certain is the one used in Old Blind Dog's rendition of "The Birkin Tree". Unfortunately the copy I have of that song is part of a collection, and won't likely have the name of every insturment used. I think Loreena McKennitt also used one on Book of Secrets, but the liner notes there just list 'Precussion' in the credits. There is a section where it might be listed, but I'm having difficulty narrowing down what I'm looking for. What is the name of that drum? and does anyone know of some resources for them that I could point her to?

Hey Aaediwen,

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas.
It wouldn't be a bongo, or a tom tom would it? Other wise I have no idea. Let me know when you find out. unsure.gif

What she described, I connect with about the same size as a djembe, but more barrel shaped , Maybe it's how I've seen them that makes me think that. But about that size, and played the same. Just seems like it had a different shape to it.

There is an African drum that looks like a conga, but is (obviously) not called a conga. I have a couple of djembes -- spent a summer with a guy who made them -- and we made the other ones too. I cannot, for the life of me, remember what they're called though.

It's a bodran. Celtic frame drum. Pronounced bow'-rawn. Comes anywhere from 6 to 20+ inch diameter. Played with a twoheaded drumstick called a tipper. If I was computer literate I'd post a pic, but I'm not, so Google it! tongue.gif

Googled the tabla...looks pretty keen! Might have to get one soon!

A musician's wish list is neverending...

1)mixer
2)microphone and stand
3)cables
4)new pc (with top-notch sound card)
5)new guitar (acoustic and electric, possibly even bass guitar as well)
6)electronic drum set
7)acoustic drums set
8)more microphones!
9)tabla drums, after reading this thread!
10)possibly djembe drums now that I've read this thread!
11)vocal processor

is that it?

no...

12)more cables
13)piano
14)here's the kicker...a reel-to-reel recording system with other analog recording gadgets!

I don't know if I'll ever get all this equipment within my lifetime but hey, a guy can dream can't he?

(solemnly whistles "Dream, Dream, Dream" by the Everly Brothers)
