Chirstian Rock 80's, what bands....?

Wow so many! Christian rock was all I pretty much all I listened to untill I listen to celtic music. I was at the very first Cornerstone festival. I listen to keith Green, Petra, Larry Norman (the grandfather of Christian rock), Randy Stonehill, Rez band, Steve Taylor. It was Sheila Walsh who was the first Celtic singer I saw. Ballydowse, Ceili Rain, and Moya Brennan are some of my favs now.

Phil Keaggy, Gary Paxton (producer:"The Monster Mash, "Alley Oop"), Larry Norman, John Michael Talbot (founding member of the folkrock group Mason Proffit).... to name a few.

Not bands, more late 70s than 80's, and not all considered to be Christian "Rock" (though they were all involved in secular Rock and Roll at one time or the other).

Remember him-how can I forget him. I saw him at the first Cornerstone festval and immediately went and bought all his tapes-no CD's back then. I was at the preformance were he joumped off stage and ended up twisting his ankle trying not to land on a kid who walked underneath where he was going to land. Got right back up and finished the show. I guess he was in a cast and wheeelchair for the rest of his tour
He is one of the best songwriters out there and I don't think the Newsboys ould have gotton anywhere without his input. I managed to get meltdown on CD and still have the rest of his stuff on tape-including the tribute album! Really wish he would put something new out.

I've never gotten into the Christian music. That's how David Koresh got his start.

I know that that's the exception, but it only takes one bad apple to spoil the whole barrel.

I have borrowed a CD called "Guitar Prayer" from my library though. It's an instrumental CD of songs from folk Masses.

The songs I can recall being on it:

"Holy, Holy, Holy"
"Lord of All Holiness"
"Eat This Bread"
"One Bread, One Body"

I was right by the front of the stage stage when it happened. I Was standing on Steve's right side about six feet away from him and maybe two or three people back. I didn't see the kid but he looked tobe in serious pain when he got back up there.
I saw Sheila Walsh and her performance of Turn, turn, turn was so powerful that it is one of the few performances where i actually started to have tears well up because it was so well done. I wish she had stayed with the musical career instead of becoming a 700 club host. wrecekd her career and almost her as well.
Also saw Kerry Livgren (from the band kansas) first performance with his new band A.D. And of course "Uncle" Randy Stonehill was great.
Rez band's performance at the end of the festval was another kick arse show.

I really wish some of these artist would make a comeback. Chritain music seems to have lost its bite since the Steven curtis chapman era.

I enjoy the boys from Stryper as well, RP. Michael Sweet has some very technically good solo works out there. Am also a big Whitecross and Idle Cure fan.

Ooh, great topic! I LOVE Christian rock to this day! My favorites in the late 70s and 80s were Phil Keagy, Kerry Livgren, Randy Stonehill. Loved John Michael Talbot, Keith Green, but I think my all time favorites were Second Chapter of Acts. Anyone remember them? Loved Mathew Ward's solo music as well.

Loved Bruce Cogburn, the Imperials and Amy Grant had a terrific album out called "Unguarded" that I played over and over and over. I could go on about favorites, but I agree when Steven Curtis Chapman came onto the scene, the Christian music seemed to mellow out a lot. But it has resurfaced with bands like DC Talk (who are no longer together), Skillet, Red, Newsboys, love Lincoln Brewster, Ceili Rain and Toby Mac from DC Talk and many others I can't think of right now.

A really good internet Christian radio station to listen to is Air1.com. Some states even have the station on their local radios. I do here and listen to it all the time on my truck radio, when not listening to Celtic music, that is.
