I have just found out about this group and love their music. I don't have any of their CDs yet... was wondering where I should start.

Posted by: Aaediwen 28-Nov-2003, 11:02 PM
I'd recommend <I>To the Moon</I>, I've also got <I>Beautiful Wasteland</I> in my collection. Indeed a wonderful group.

Posted by: CelticRose 28-Nov-2003, 11:10 PM
Oh thank you! Aaediwen. Was just on eBay looking at their CDs and was not sure which to buy!

Posted by: Elspeth 29-Nov-2003, 01:25 AM
Should have know the first group you'd discover was the same one as did I. biggrin.gif

To the Moon definately. Of course they may all be as good, this is the only one I have, but it contains the song I love the very, very best. The Price of Fire.

Enjoy. Karen Mathieson truly has a gifted voice.

Ooh! Elspeth! We seem to have the same taste! Thanks for the help. I will definitely get To the Moon then. I have heard Karen Mathieson's voice and she is phenomenal! Many thanks again!

Let us know how you like it. smile.gif

Posted by: Catriona 29-Nov-2003, 07:41 AM
I've got all their CDs - and I have seen them live on at least 10 occasions over the years (probably more, I don't keep count!)

Posted by: CelticRose 29-Nov-2003, 01:53 PM
Catriona -- where are the band from?

I noticed they have a new CD out called "Choice Language." It got really good reviews by Amazon buyers. I think I may get that one too. Oh! My Christmas list is ever growing! rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif

Posted by: Catriona 30-Nov-2003, 08:52 AM
They have been together for so long, I can't remember the exact details of their beginnings! Although I seem to think most of them were at school together in Oban... (don't quote me, I haven't got the CD boxes beside me in my study!)

Here's a website which claims to have their bibliography - haven't checked if ALL their stuff is on the site...

http://www.themusicindex.com/commerce/pages/html/capercaillie_bio.htm

A capercaillie is a game bird - large - and a symbol of Scotland to many people!

Posted by: CelticRose 30-Nov-2003, 03:38 PM
Ooh Catriona! Thank you. I checked out their site you gave me and it looks as though they did start in Oban, West Scotland. Recorded their first CD in 1984, so they have been together a long time.

Thank you for giving me the definition of Capercaillie. It is always nice to know things like that. I noticed after I started this thread that I had misspelled their name by leaving the i off the end of the name! Duh! I was so mad at myself but you all got who I was talking about anyway.

I am getting an Amazon gift certificate for Christmas, so you know what I will be shopping for. What are your favorite songs?

Posted by: snowblind 01-Dec-2003, 01:51 AM
I second Beautiful Wasteland and also strongly recommend Delirium. All of my favourite songs by them are on Delirium, Breisleach in particular is an amazing song!

Posted by: CelticRose 09-Dec-2003, 02:35 PM
Well I went to Amazon.com and tried to buy the CDs you all recommended, but to my dismay they were sold out! sad.gif But I was able to buy their latest CD called "Choice Language" and that got good reviews too. I will also get an Amazon gift certificate for Christmas and hopefully by then, I can buy some of the other CDs. I just really love their music and Karen's voice! Oh my! thumbs_up.gif

Oh my goodness! I got my Capercaillie CD, Choice Language, and it is marvelous! Every single song on there is absolutely wonderful! Hard to pinpoint any favorites, but I really love the song At Dawn of Day. I would highly recommend this new CD of theirs to fans of this very talented band. thumbs_up.gif

Eamon and Celtic Rose;

I "discovered" Capercaillie by watching "Rob Roy" and was absolutely fascinated. Then I bought the soundtrack-CD and found "Choice Language" at amazon.

Did you finally get the movie? I don't know how often I did watch it until now; still love it - hope Santa did a good job for you! smile.gif

JaneyMae! I did indeed get the Rob Roy movie. I very much enjoyed it. I loved the music and the solo done in the movie by Karen Matheson. I have "Choice Language" and just ordered "To The Moon."

I'm really glad for you! Enjoy it...you must have been a good girl this year (*grin*)

I am a Capercaillie French fan ! I have seen them live only once but that was in Cairo, Egypt (not live at the Pyramids !) in 1987 ! Their concert was great and my Scottish friends sent me lots of tapes through the mail to Egypt.

Now that I am back to France, I hope to see them live again soon. I hope to talk and to meet Capecaillie fans in 2004 ! That is one of my wishes for the new year.

Tell me about your feelings when you saw Capercaillie live or when you listen to Karen 's magical voice ! angel.gif

Waiting for your opinion ! smile.gif

Hi Lionel! I am a recent convert to Capercaillie. I first heard them on Celticradio and wow! I had to find out who they were. I only have the one CD, Choice Languages, and it is awesome. I ordered To The Moon but have not received it yet as it is on back order. I have a German friend who is burning some of her Capercaillie CDs and is sending them to me now. I can hardly wait.

I own the movie Rob Roy and Karen Matheson's voice solo in there was just beyond beautiful. I love her voice, the music, the singing in Gaelic. I love their contemporary work as well as traditional. A very gifted group of musicians and singers. walkman.gif

Hi CelticRose !

Oh great ! I think that we have the same tastes in music ! I also own the Rob Roy DVD and every time I listen to Karen's voice singing in the movie, I shiver ! Incredible voice and beautiful woman ! heart.gif Can't wait seeing her again live after the Cairo concert 16 years ago ! rolleyes.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 11-Jan-2004, 07:21 PM
Wow! That is a long time ago! Has Capercaillie been together that long? I bet it was awesome seeing them and in such a beautiful setting too. That is my favorite part in the Rob Roy movie is Karen's solo! Gives me chills too! thumbs_up.gif

Posted by: Lionel 11-Jan-2004, 07:30 PM
Yes that was a long time ago and Karen Matheson was still very young ! But unfortunately the concert was not at the pyramids ! It was at the American University in Cairo (Ewart Hall), the venue was quite nice and the concert really good ! I still have the poster of the concert, I kept it as a memory !

Posted by: CelticRose 17-Jan-2004, 01:21 AM
Well I am sooooooooo excited cause a good friend of mine from Germany sent me three Capercaillie CDs today! She sent me "Dusk Till Dawn -- The Best of Capercaillie," "Glenfinnan -- Songs of the 45" and "Waulk Roots." They are all so marvelous, I am not sure which I like the best! I ordered "To the Moon" but it is on back order and so I am impatiently waiting for that one too! I want to order "Delirium" but that has been out of stock. sad.gif

Posted by: Lionel 18-Jan-2004, 08:59 AM
Try to order them directly from Capercaillie's label, Vertical Records.

www.verticalrecords.co.uk

Posted by: CelticRose 18-Jan-2004, 07:36 PM
Thanks Lionel! I thought about that. I have ordered things from the UK before, but the shipping is horribly expensive from there to the US and I am too cheap to pay for it. So my German friend and I burn CDs for each other and trade! smile.gif

Posted by: Lionel 21-Jan-2004, 04:59 PM
That's the best deal that you can get ! Enjoy your Capercaillie listening ! smile.gif

Capercaille - cool band. Karen Matheson's vocals are something special thumbs_up.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 04-Feb-2004, 10:47 PM
I got two new Capercaillie CDs in the mail from Amazon last night: Delirium and Beautiful Wasteland! Absolutely beautiful as all their CDs, but think of the two I am partial to Beautiful Wasteland! thumbs_up.gif

Posted by: CelticRose 21-Mar-2004, 07:33 AM
I finally, finally got my "To the Moon" CD. This has been back ordered since Christmas and I can see why it was on back order. This CD is excellent. I could listen to it all day and night. It is so wonderful!

Hiya Rosie!

We've got to quit meeting like this! My wife might get jealous! wink.gif

Once again I find that we have a common interest! I love Capercaillie also. I have 6 of their albums:

Crosswinds
Sidewaulk
Beautiful Wasteland
To the Moon
Dusk Till Dawn The Best of...
Nàdurra

Of the 6, I think Beautiful Wasteland is my faorite also! Some of my favorite songs are Fisherman's Dream, M'Ionam, Níl sí I nGrá, Ailein Duinn, The Price of Fire`, Coisich A Ruin, Outlaws, Waiting For the Wheel to Turn, and Mi Le M' Uilinn from Karen's solo album (which I don't have yet, but hope to get!)

It's really cool when I sit down to listen to one of their Gaelic songs and suddenly a word or lyric that I never understood before becomes clear to me! Makes me kinda glad to be a' learning the Gaelic!

Hiya Allen!

Hey! My husband may get jealous too! wink.gif laugh.gif But it is great running into you!

I have 6 of Capercaillie's CDs too!

I have
Dusk till Dawn, The Best of....
Beautiful Wasteland
Too the Moon -- my favorite thumbs_up.gif
The 45 -- my favorite thumbs_up.gif
Delirium
And one I cannot remember the name of, but it is mostly reels and such.

Do you like Runrig? I love them too! Have about 5 of their CDs as well.

Posted by: wizardofowls 20-Apr-2004, 07:20 PM
I've only heard one or two of Runrig's songs, not really enough to form an opinion just yet, and those were a long time ago... Know of any sites were I can here a song or two?

I forgot to list one of my other favorite Caperaillie song, Muladach Mi Is Mi Air M'Aineol. This is one of the first songs I ever heard by them, and probably my favorite. I like to sing it to babies!

Posted by: CelticRose 21-Apr-2004, 05:50 PM
Allen, just look up on google for Runrig and that will take you to their site. You can also access some of their music on Amazon.com. I bet you would love their music too.

I also bet with your knowledge of Gaelic you can sing along with Capercaillie and Runrig! thumbs_up.gif

Posted by: wizardofowls 21-Apr-2004, 07:46 PM
Tapadh leat a ghràidh!
Thanks dear!

I will look up the Runrig site when I have some time! You're right, I do enjoy singing along with Capercaillie! And Mary Jane Lamond! Even though I don't always understand all of the words, its great pronunciation practice for me!

Posted by: CelticRose 24-Apr-2004, 03:44 AM
Allen, here is one of the many Runrig sites: http://www.runrig.co.uk/
