Well, it is 0543 CST and all of the news channels are reporting that ol' Saddam has been taken alive. I guess we'll see if it is true. If so, Huah!!
If true, how does everyone feel this will impact the political recovery of Iraq, and how will it impact US politics? Does this help Bush in his reelection bid?
I think that if the Iraqi people can be convinced that he is REALLY in custody, they may be able to get on with politically restructuring their country. Convincing them will be tough, given that he had many body doubles and substitutes. I guess DNA might be able to ID him, but will the Iraqi people buy ths? What do you guys think?
Will the opposition party in the US be able to overcome this by next November? I feel that this is a coup for the Bush administration that the Democrats probably won't be able to overcome. What think ye all?
Well, just waiting for the military press conference to see if it is for real.

This could get interesting. I wonder if he will be put on trial by a US military tribunal (which I hope doesn't happen) or an Iraqi court, possibly under Islamic law.
Hussein will probably hope for the military tribunal, since he would be much less likely to face the death penalty that way. But, I feel theat the Iraqi people, who suffered under him, should be the ones to determine his fate.
My Wife woke me up to tell me the News. Needless to say I was up like a shot.
Now with Saddam captured, maybe our efforts to catch Bin Ladden will be next, without a doubt.
This I believe will greatly quiet the Democratic Party. But I think this wil not stop them and now there effort will be made towards President Bush on why haven't we capture Bin Ladden yet.
Overall, I do not think the Democratic Party will have a Snowball's Chance (in You Know Where) in the up coming Presidential Election.

I woke up quite early due to morning sickness and sat there half the morning watching speculations on the BBC world service...
I personally think Saddam should be tried in front of the international court of justice, but since the US don't recognise it I don't see much hope he ever will stand in front of a public, fair and independent trial.. I don't think the trial will be fully public either since he has to say many many embarrassing things to the US, to Russia, France, Germany and all those others who helped him getting this kind of grasp over his country.

The democratic party will have to hope that people become better informed about the issues. The present US administration has stripped the environmental laws of their effectiveness, crippled the US economy and started dismanteling the Medicare program. The US educational system is suffering badly. Tax relief for the rich. Sure, THAT helps. The Iraq war benefits ONLY the big oil companies (Halliburton counts as one of those). The people in Iraq get xxxxxx, but that was happening anyway. War on terror? The Iraq war has moved us all backward in that regard. The entire Muslim world is now firmly anti-US. Only about half were that way before the US incursion into Iraq. Of course that is only my opinion. I also have a related posting under "rebuilding Iraq".
