Even though the dot com breakdown a few years ago resulted in many people giving up their domain names, it is still very hard to find that perfect dot com name that both describes your website and is easy for people to remember.

We have been eyeing CelticRadio.com for sometime now, and even though it is owned by PBS, we thought perhaps they may not renew the name. There is actually a very nice Celtic Radio (terrestrial) program that is associated with CelticRadio.com.

Since they renewed their domain name until 2008, we have been looking for a dot com name that we could use as a second name and also help boost our search engine rankings.

Our new second domain name is....drum roll please..........

CelticMusicRadio.com

Yes, it is a bit longer than most domain names, but it does describe our site very well. We will continue to develop our website under CelticRadio.net. In a few days the new domain will kick in and hopefully drive some more traffic to our site.

Some great suggestions! There does seem to be some room open for domain names, not like a few years ago when everyone and the brother were buying up absolutely everything hoping that some company would pay $100,000 for the name.

If I recall right, at the height of the dot com craze, business.com sold for over 1 million dollars!

With limited resources, we will probably just stick with this one extra domain. It should help the search engines because Celtic, Music and Radio describe our site perfectly plus there are lots of references to those 3 words in our website. Hopefully it will bring some more and new people in, which is the reason for the purchase. Also, it might be good as an alternative because I know alot of people that when they get home they type CelticRadio.com instead of .net. So maybe they will remember CelticMusicRadio.com.

Now we own 4 domains:

celtichearts.com
celticradio.net
scottishradio.net
celticmusicradio.com

If anyone has park avenue, could you sell it to me for a song? tongue.gif

No need for extra domains, CelticRadio.net fits just perfect.

1. it's a network of people who listen to music,
2. it's simple to remember.
3. .com no, becuase this is not a comerical enterprise.
4. 2 domains can become confusing to people, and what if one goes away?
5. celticradio.net is easier to build through search engines.

Cheers,

Oh and added cost of a 2nd domain. Spend the money else where.

Cheers,

You make a good argument for CelticRadio.net! Yes, we have no plans on changing the name of the site for the very reason you mentioned. In fact, I think .net is better than .com because .net was original designed for internet services and this is an internet service.

ScottishRadio.net we will probably let go once it runs out because all of the search engines have us listed under CelticRadio.net.

Celtichearts.com we will hold onto and develop as a seperate site at some future point. I am thinking email, hosting and some sort of webportal that is years off in the making.

CelticMusicRadio.com - time will tell if it helps with the search engine listings. Small 1 year investment.

Totally unrelated to this conversation, but my 5 year old daughter is so connected to computers she had a dream last night about barbie.com. She sat up and blurted out barbie.com in her sleep. Her computer is right next to mine and while I am in paintshop pro, she is in kid pix.... smile.gif

That's got to be very cute biggrin.gif

I agree will Killthraka

I actually had no problem remembering this site name and it came up pretty high on the search engines when I was looking for Celtic music.

Search engines don't go by the name; they go by the amount of hits in the content that is in the site. So celticradio.net would be the same as any other one that you search for. (Once the robots get to it) This is why I think it's silly to have 2 names for 1 site. 1 site, 1 function, 1 name.
