Along with Leo, I'm the only other 'foreign' moderator. Sitting here in Ottawa, the capital of Canada and knowing that with the windchill outside the temperature is around -40 F right now, it's not easy thinking about the summer festivals. However, I am looking forward to them.
I have been hanging around Highland Games and festivals now, in one form or another for more than 37 years. My mother used to be a highland dance teacher, my brother a highland dancer and I have pictures of myself when I was 3 with a small set of toy pipes. Since then, I have been either piping, spectating or vending at festivals. I have attended hundreds of festivals including the Glengarry Highland Games, the very first highland games at Loon Mountain in New Hampshire, the Celtic Classic in Bethlehem, PA and many more. In addition, I have been maintaining a list of over 300 festivals taking place around North America on my website for over 7 years now.
This forum is not only intended for Highland Games, but will also be a place to discuss Irish festivals, Celtic festivals, Renaissance festivals and any other type of festival that fits the forum.
Hey Keltic. I didn't know Canada was a foreign country. LOL. I thought Canadians were our cousins. Anyway sounds like you have a lot of experience with games/festivals. And although it doesn't get as cold down here in the south all of us are ready for the spring when the festivals and the games begin.
I am sooooo excited. When I logged in today I saw on the calendar that the Kentucky Scottish Weekend will be May 13 - 15 at General Butler State Park in Carrollton. Guess where I will be next weekend!?!? It will be my first festival!! Yippee!!
Keltic....the Glengarry Bhoys will be there. When you were at the festival in Glengarry, did you see them?
Thistlefur - - you bet I'll be at UTA this year for the Scottish Festival! I wouldn't pass up a chance to see The Rogues and Scottish Mayhem (and my hands will be sore at the end of the day from clapping along!). I missed NTIF in Dallas in March so I HAVE to be at the Scottish Games. Any other members going?
MaDora
p.s. Ed Miller will be there too... what a wonderful voice!
Hi Keltic, congratulations on your new role here at Celtic Radio and welcome.
My husband and I have been to the Montreal highland games a few years now...maybe 10 years and always looking forward to go every years no matter what. Every time it's a real treat for me, enjoying the music under the big tent or just take a walk around the site.
I don't know if you have any idea what happened to the "Celtic Music Festival" we use to have about the same time. This was great too because there was great musicians from around the world that would come and play. All of a sudden it stops. And I think there was only 3 or 4 events if my memory serve me well after that nothing.Too bad.
Maybe this year my husband and I will go and see the Glengarry's, we've been talking about it for the past 2 years and finally end-up in Montreal. I heard from the athlete of the heavy events that the Glengarry's one are something to see.
Again this year we'll try not just talk about it but go...we'll see.LOA
