That's right. I need baby names. No, we're not pregnant, I'll save ye that question. But we are planning on getting pregnant just after the weddin in six months. I know, there's a whole other nine months after that to think about such things, but I've got it in my head now. Truth be told, we're just looking for girls names. Boys names have been decided already. Labban Adam, and Naithaniel Poe. But girl names are giving us a bit of a problem. Ange mentioned last night that she'd like to go with Summer Solstice Reeves. I said it sounds cool, but I wouldn't name a kid that unless they were born on the Summer Solstice. So that left us just as stumped as ever. I mean, we've got a 1:365 chance of being able to use that one. So I'm looking for Celtic names for girls. Can ye help me out? |

I'm not sure about Celtic ones, OR, but here's a few of the traditional Scots /Gaelic names we have in our family Maeve, Fiona, Mairi, Sile, Morag, Elspeth, Shona - and Catriona, of course |

I've actually seen a nice website not long ago... why call a child summer solstice btw? seems a bit weird to me... there should be a nice name for that! (winter solstice is better anyway btw from then on the days become longer again! ) anyway, I'll find that website for you, it weren't only celtic names but names from all over the world with meaning etc. I like Liadan, it means grey lady. Where it comes from I don't know. Siobhan is nice as well.. for our baby we were thinking about girls names and Craig came up with Kara Mhairi or Catriona (we both like both.. so its either that or Rowan Paul for a boy) |

ummmh.. just thought.. what about Ceridwen/Caridwen? you'll get to tell her the story of Ceridwen's cauldron (this fast reply is a really good invention Paul!) |

My Case have a close female friend named Rona and I just love this name In Gaelic it means Seal (like the animal) though there are several meanings for this name she associates hers with Seal so unsure on how each is associated with what but her's is associated with Seal. I find this name quite unique (at least stateside) and very pretty |

I, personally, would go for Craig Regarding girl names, I like Brenna, Cairine, and Sheena in particular. There's a nice lot of choice Celtic/Gaelic baby name sites on the net, oldraven - I'm sure you'll discover the one that's just right for you. |

I find it interesting every time I encounter the names of Rhiannon or Brighid..... Not sure just what kind of Celtic roots the name of Isabel might have, but I think it quite lovely too.... |

I was thinking of Mhairi, but Ange made a face, so that's a no go. |

This isn't exactly Celtic, but the names we have picked out are Willow Ayne and Jesse Gilbert |

bitter... I read about 20 different translations for my name so far (Miriam) and one of them was bitter, others that occured frequently were rebellious, Mistress/Lady of the Water |

Old Raven, Here on this Site in Celtic Nations, Ireland, Irish Names, is a long list of Celtic girl names. You might want to check it out. |

Mhairi is okay but only if you pronounce it right I think... (pronounced: Vaary) |
Posted by: oldraven 10-Feb-2004, 05:09 PM |
Well, over here it's pronounced MIE-ree. And I like the sound of that better than Vaary. But, Ange doesn't like either, so we're still done with that one. |
Posted by: Celticpride 10-Feb-2004, 06:49 PM |
Several years ago when I asked my neighbors daughter what name she would like to call her new brother she said with no hesitation "Butter Fly Catcher Rainbow baby" Different but very catchy and memorable..... Out of the mouths of Babes......lol |

Hey, OldRaven, what names does Ange like? Have any of our suggestions met with her approval? I'm sure you guys are finding more yourselves, and I must admit to being curious about the ones you're mulling over. This is a lot of fun! No pressure on us, and we get to experiment. So what does she think?? Dreamer1 |

Dreamer, At the mention of Coira (COY-rah I assume, correct me if I'm wrong) she stirred from her trance, watching cooking yet again. So far she's asked me "It's Coira, right?" about 30 times. So, I'm pretty sure that one's going to be on the finals. Other than that, she's extremely picky. You know what drives me? When people act like a certain name is an insult, just because they 'knew someone' by that name who was an ingrate. So? I knew someone by that name who was a wonderful person, and I like it. You know what? I bet as soon as you named your kid that certain name, you'd have better feelings toward it. Bah! *end rant* I like Mhairi. Always have. But I can't use that one for reasons noted above. yar |
Posted by: Aon_Daonna 11-Feb-2004, 12:08 PM |
hehe well, I don't mind the name personally (it's often pronounced the way you said over here as well..). It's okay but not my favourite. But I think if people give their kids weird names they should get the pronunciation right in my eyes... =/ that's why I won't ever do it to my kid and call it Paul with first name because the german pronunciation makes me shiver. |
Posted by: oldraven 11-Feb-2004, 12:35 PM |
Well, we're not out to give our kids weird names anyway. Unique, maybe. At least where we are. That's why I'm glad I got Summer Solstice out of her head. That's just too much. |
Posted by: Aon_Daonna 11-Feb-2004, 01:10 PM |
hehe unique.. weird.. dinnae mind that pal. Rowan is my idea if my one is a wee boy and for german standarts is quite unique I still think pronunciation is sort of important as well =) |
Posted by: Richard Bercot 11-Feb-2004, 01:10 PM
Old Raven, I am so glad to hear that you are not planning any wierd names. I knew a girl, when I was in school, whose name was April Showers. There was so many kids made fun of her because of that. |
Posted by: oldraven 11-Feb-2004, 01:57 PM |
Yeah, knew a girl growing up who's name was Rainy Day. |
Posted by: Aon_Daonna 11-Feb-2004, 02:01 PM |
*blinks* poor kids. And I thought Viviana Celine was an awful name for a wee girl... |

OldRaven, Will Ange accept Mhairi as a middle name? I like the sound of Coira Mhairi, and you'd have both of your favorites, too. At least it can't be shortened to some obnoxious nickname! My hubby was seriously considering the name William Robert if we had a son. Now I like both of those names, please understand, but I knew that the poor kid would be immediately christened "Billy Bob"(!) and never hear William except from me!! UUUGGGHHH! What are some of the names she likes, and how do you feel about them? Remember, too, that you've got a good bit of time to work on this. Maybe she just needs to get used to the names in reference to her own child, instead of someone else. Patience, M'Lord. Dreamer1 |
Posted by: Dreamer1 12-Feb-2004, 08:13 AM |
Umm, let me amend that last post a bit. I mean names she likes other than Summer Solstice. (I agree with you. Summer is a good name, sweet really. I'd use it by itself...) Dreamer1 |
Posted by: RavenWing 12-Feb-2004, 09:50 AM
It usually is a boy's name but that didn't stop her. I don't know what my sister-in-law was thinking. |
Posted by: tsargent62 12-Feb-2004, 10:35 AM |
My daughter's name is Megan. I've seen all sorts of spellings for it, but we decided on the simple one. I just looked up the name (never occurred to me before). It means "intoxicating" or "she who makes men drunk". Ironic given it's an Irish Celtic name. |
Posted by: gaberlunzie 12-Feb-2004, 11:20 AM
It fits, eh? But Megan is a beautiful name! |
Posted by: Cymro 12-Feb-2004, 05:30 PM |
Megan is Welsh isn't it? how do you pronounce yours? Meg-Han |
Posted by: Aon_Daonna 13-Feb-2004, 09:34 AM
All Kilians I know are actually bavarian... *shudders* In my college two of the technicians we work with are called Frazer with first name.. I always thought that was a family name rather than anything other, I always get very confused if people call their kids "MacKenzie" or such things by first name... I think "Sheila" is quite popular over here as well, and I quite like it. Otherwise I'm just entering a Joscelin and Judicaël phase, both names I like alot and I have friends going by that name... btw, Joscelins brother is called "Gordian" does anybody know where that name comes from? I mean I only found 1 person with that name so far and it reminds me of the Gordian knot but Gordian says it's not from that... so, confusion all around |
Posted by: tsargent62 13-Feb-2004, 10:29 AM
I always thought Megan was Irish. Plus, on the name web site someone posted earlier it was listed in the Irish section. I didn't look under the Welsh section. We pronounce it MEG-en. When my wife was pregnant with our second son, I was campaigning for Cullen. That is my favorite boy's name. She wouldn't have it. She grew up with an unusual name and hated it. It's spelled Maria, but pronounced MAR-ee-ah. Like Mario with an "a". Her father is from the Yucatan Penninsula of Mexico, so the pronounciation is a regional thing. |

Hey OldRaven, Anything new on this front? Have you decided to let it simmer on the back burner for a while, hoping she'll come round to your picks? (Just curious!) Dreamer1 |
Posted by: kyre 16-Feb-2004, 06:49 PM |
I like two specialy, Xeila and Aixa. My best wishes for your future child |
Posted by: oldraven 17-Feb-2004, 09:29 AM |
Just like you said, Dreamer. It's on the back burner for a few hours. Baby fever sweeps through this house like a mad wind, but doesn't stay for long. We did just spend the day with my brothers family yesterday though, and his son is turning one on wednesday. (James Reginald Reeves III, no joke, he's a third) I imagine she'll be baby crazy again for the next week or two. |
