Maybe this site is familiar to some of you. I just found this guy (nice little wife here too, sigh . . . ) who's gone over to kilts all the time. That picture of him on the rocks with the sea behind him just turns me heart over. Not just wearing it, but biking in it. Notice the "Sporranos" t-shirt http://www.nucleus.com/~agingles/kilts.html Is there anything more attractive than a man in a kilt? You lads that are wearing one all the time -- you simply make the world a better place . Thanks! |

AYe lassie kilts are the thing to wear! A man in akilt is a man and half. As I say Shout Freedom and let loose the legs of woe |

Hey crazy, love your new avatar! |

Wish I could wear a kilt to work. Being a computer support tech, I have to crawl under peoples desks. That does not work too well in a kilt. |

I agree - nothing better than a man in a kilt! |

As long as we're onto kilts -- this is a beautiful website detailing the history of the kilt. http://albanach.org/kilt.html |

Kilts are fantastic. Unfortunately they're a little rare where I live. And thanks for the link to that website, Stoirmeil. |

Personally, I wouldnae' mind wearing a kilt... I'd just want to design my own pattern for my family first before I went about actually wearing one... |
Posted by: crazykiltedcelt 03-Aug-2006, 03:29 PM
you design i, I'll sew it!! |
Posted by: Dogshirt 03-Aug-2006, 06:18 PM |
Aye! Tis a gran' thin' tae wear a kilt. When I was at th' games this last weekend, walkin' wi' one o' my girls, she said " You're getting looks." "Naw !" I said, "I'm jist an old fart, why whid the lasses be lookin' a' me?" "Well, they are" she told me. Later I saw a sweet lass tha' deserved tae be turned aroond and looked at an' SHE WAS TURNED AROOND AN' LOOKIN" A' ME! Sae I guess tis true, th' lasses love 'em! |
Posted by: stoirmeil 03-Aug-2006, 06:59 PM
Havers, mon! It's a' in th' Freud -- gin ye can weer a kilt an' also remind a lass o' her first great love (that's tae say, her da) -- weel, ye're juist sae much catnip. For wha' d'ye think Sir Sean Connery still has 'em all beggin'? You know, crazykiltedcelt, if you're getting good with the kilts we ought to think about a business -- I'm really good with the jacobean shirts. I use the dancer's gussets under the arm for a 360-degree free swing to the sword arm. Never comes untucked. |

I have never seen any guy ride a motorcycle wearing a kilt, that would be something to see!!!!!! maggiemahone1 |

Posted by: Irish Stepper 06-Aug-2006, 01:21 AM |
I'd actually like to know how he rides that motorcycle with his kilt. Or at least, how he keeps the kilt where it belongs and keep other things from flapping in the breeze! |

maybe just a wee peep when he mounts the bike... zeryx, your son is a very handsome lad in his kilt. I know you must be very proud! maggiemahone1 |
Posted by: Irish Stepper 06-Aug-2006, 08:27 PM |
Hey that's a good idea. We should collect a bunch of kilt wearing members pictures and have Macfive set up a voting contest. He can use that as an excuse to give away some of his huge collection of CD's! |
Posted by: zeryx 07-Aug-2006, 01:26 AM |
Ahhh but that could mean we ladies are excluded from the prize! lol Maggie - you're right - I've VERY proud of my son - and thank you |
Posted by: Irish Stepper 07-Aug-2006, 04:01 AM |
We'd be excluded from the prize of the CD's...but we'd have the pictures to look at whenever we needed a kilt fix! |
Posted by: zeryx 07-Aug-2006, 04:16 AM |
woudn't we just! lol |
Posted by: stoirmeil 07-Aug-2006, 10:01 AM |
I think a kilt photo contest is a lovely idea! I'll PM Macfive about it. Now there's a bit of sad news -- the gentleman whose site I linked to does not actually bike in the kilt, for reasons of safety -- you really do need more protection than a kilt would give you. However, I think he is doing a great public service to the imagination just posing next to the bike in a black leather jacket and kilt. The two young men look wonderful in their kilts, zeryx. Very manly. |
Posted by: zeryx 07-Aug-2006, 10:19 AM |
don't they just! I thought about you all today whilst out in town - and just HAD to snap this picture of an unsuspecting passerby unfortunately he moved out of the perfectly framed photo I did have! |

Hunk? Gentleman?? Wow, you must have me confused with someone else! Thanks to Stoirmeil for her wonderful email and the link to this site. I've finally got my head out of the clouds enough for a first post. And yes, I'll be doing a proper intro in that section shortly. Fantastic music here, and what seems to be an interesting collection of forum members! The only member who I recognize so far is Graham (Tassiecelt) who I know from the Xmarksthescot kilt forum. Now on to this thread...I'm not sure what I can add. As someone who's fast becoming an "old fart", I can't honestly recall the last time I was referred to as a "hunk". Does my heart good, though, and I thank everyone for their comments. As Stoirmeil pointed out recently, I do not actually ride my Harley while kilted, although I have made very short trips around the neighbourhood on the bike while wearing my Utilikilt. Certainly good for bringing traffic to a standstill. Sorry, no pics. I've been wearing kilts on a regualr basis for a little over 3 years now, and currently have 7 of them to choose from. I just ordered #8 last week, a traditional Irish Saffron kilt to honour my Irish roots. Looking forward to receiving that one, and yes, pics will be posted once it arrives. Zeryx...your son looked great in his kilt! And for the ladies with the wandering minds, I found this pic online. It's not me, but I thought you'd enjoy seeing it. |

I have seen that image somewhere else, and the caption says that his unit commander penalized him -- but only because the tops of his socks were uneven. Now if you collect things like this, you will know there's a yet worse one, but it's not fit for here. (I can PM it to you though . . . ) |

Ahem. Not the kind of thing Prince Charles would be caught doing, I'm sure. Actually, even Prince Charles looks good in a kilt. I tell ya the things are miraculous. Here's a lad who stood up for his kiltwearing rights. But the stupid article persists in calling it a SKIRT. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/26/AR2006012602013.html In a way, this kind of ties in with the discussion we were having about kids' rights in school . . . |

I recently discovered Youtube.com after looking for tartan terrors and tartanic videos lately. Its a marvel what they have as far as videos on that site. Even found enya videos and interviews. But if the lasses want a treat just type in "kilt" in the search and see what comes up. |

Hey Al G. Thanks for the picture! That'll definitely give my wandering mind something to stop and focus on for awhile. |

kilts are fun kilts are great but trying to sew in one is not. my ieda on pockets turned out to be harder than i thouht. the frist one when in OK but the second one is just troulbe.Runing out of tread don't help either, but i'm not down yet no kilt can get the better of me! |

I think kilts are hard to do, and you're pretty brave. I've only made a couple for myself, though, and I think it's harder to get it right for a woman's kilt. Men are more straight up and down -- the pleats following a stripe don't bend well across hip curves. What was the idea, and what happened to it? Just interested. |
Posted by: crazykiltedcelt 08-Aug-2006, 01:45 PM |
i thouht to use the under plets but that wolud make a very samll pocket. The under plet get in the way on the left side for pockets working around the problem, the frist plet being a deep one need to modife it to fit in the pocket, just need patices and time to work on it. Maybe friday the only day this week thats free. I shall perveil , this kilt will look good in the end. Got anew camra so picture will be forcoming as soon asI learnhow opertrae this camra and down it. My bright Son canhelp his old dad in thsi mod mod world. |

Maybe you can get some inspiration from Utilikilts or Amerikilts site. I know that Utilikilts has drawings of their kilts for you to click on. Might give you an idea on how to design it for pockets. Zeryx: I had even found a video on how to fold the great kilt. Save myself a good $10-$20 finding it there rather than have some company send me instructions on a video tape I will probably watch only once |

men women childern dancers pipers warroirs the kilt is the same the diffents is in the measurements bad measure bad kilt. I do enjoy my kilts once ther done, just to making can be a bother somedays. That is what takes so long, working on them only on days I'm on top of my game. A kilted life is the life for me!! |

Here's another pic for the ladies. This one is me, but it's not on my web page. I wasn't happy with the quality of the picture as it looks too washed out. It was taken near the summit on the "Going to the Sun" highway in Glacier Nat'l Park, Montana a few weeks ago. |
Posted by: stoirmeil 09-Aug-2006, 01:55 PM |
Great shot, Al G! You and the landscape grace each other very nicely. What beautiful country! That utilikilt really grows on a person -- the black doesn't look odd to me at all now. You know? There's some similarity in the way you get yourself into an old-fashioned great kilt and the draping of a sari -- especially the temporary hand arrangement of pleats. http://www.sari.org.in/ Scroll down to the instructions for draping. (Very pretty lady, too, lads.) |

I had a great kilted encounter once, probably 3 years ago in the middle of a Target department store. Now in middle Georgia, a Target store is NOT where you usually see a guy in a kilt. But I was there one day doing my shopping when to my astonishment I saw a very handsome, tall, dark-haired guy walking towards me with a kilt on. His T-shirt said something about supporting the wearing of kilts, and he grinned at me as he walked by (he was probably amused by the slack-jawed expression I was wearing). As he passed, I turned to watch the view and burst out into applause. He never slowed a step but raised a hand in acknowledgement as he walked away! Sweet. SB |

Boy I sure did a double take on that post! We have a guy dancer in our school who wears a black utilikilt when we dance in competition or performances. He's older and married, but I still drool over that! ('specially when he kicks up his legs dancing) |
Posted by: zeryx 09-Aug-2006, 05:33 PM |
I was driving past a kilt shop in Dundee city centre today and had to chuckle at the wording on the window ... I thought you'd all enjoy it too! http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i155/zeryx/09082006061.jpg |

I LOVE it! |
Posted by: Roberto Phoenix 09-Aug-2006, 08:14 PM |
It would have even funnier if they had put some soccer or rugby balls in the window. Speaking of kilt stores I'm surprised Hot Topics has never carried them or something like them for the guys. It seems that they would stock that sort of merchandise. Maybe we should get a kilt campaign going. |
Posted by: Dogshirt 09-Aug-2006, 09:15 PM
I thought that was where all this was going. We'll make the WHOLE world wear kilts, manditory dress code. |
Posted by: Roberto Phoenix 09-Aug-2006, 09:38 PM |
The whole world! I don't know if I want to share the "secret" appeal of the kilt with the whole world just yet. It's just too much fun being in the minority for me right now if ye know what I mean. |
Posted by: Dogshirt 09-Aug-2006, 10:05 PM |
Why, yes, yes I do! Okay rest of the world, it's back to mundane pants for you! |

Like I said, you ladies set the rules and we'll send in the pictures. |
Posted by: Roberto Phoenix 10-Aug-2006, 10:20 PM
There is an unbelievable varity (I believe over 5,000 at this point) but most tend to go with the family name tartans. that tends to be the Scottish rule of thumb. Irish tend to go with the county they live in. If you are neither Scottish or Irish you can get tartans of you're country (I've seen Amrerican, German, Canada, Italian (mine), Cornwall etc. If you live in the U.S.A. there is a good chance that there is a state tartan. I know Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota all have state tartans. There are also Corporation tartans, National tartans, job related tartans, etc. Good place to check is http://www.Electric Scotland.com |

Oopps, accidently put a space in that link. It should be http://www.electricscotland.com |
Posted by: ballydun 10-Aug-2006, 10:32 PM |
we do have a state tartan, and have even just gotten a Tricentennial tartan for our city. Unfortunately I don't like either of them. Maybe I'll let him choose one and I'll get a matching one. I have heard that women aren't supposed to wear kilts...is that true? |
Posted by: Dogshirt 10-Aug-2006, 10:43 PM |
Technically, no, women don't wear the kilt. But there are women that play in pipe bands that do. Part of the uniform. There are also what are called "Open Tartans" like The Blackwatch, Royal Stewart, Dress Gordon (Mine) and a few others. Open means anyone can wear them. |
Posted by: ballydun 10-Aug-2006, 11:03 PM |
good to know! So if I get a skirt it would be more appropriate? That is OK with me, I'd like it a little longer anyway. I think one of our pipe bands wear Blackwatch for their uniform. It is a nice looking tartan. I like the Dress Gordon as well. Thanks for the input! |
Posted by: zeryx 11-Aug-2006, 01:19 AM |
There are a few websites you can view tartans on http://www.lochcarron.com/reiver.htm http://www.lindaclifford.com/TartanList.html Irish http://www.lindaclifford.com/TartanListI&C.html http://www.kilts.com/irish_tartans.htm |

While this is good advice, you can quite honestly pick any tartan that catches your eye. Families and clans did things pretty much that way in the days before clans became "associated" with certain tartans. They would choose whatever the local weaver happened to have at the time. Clan association with tartans didn't really become commonplace until the Victorian era. Stoirmeil's link earlier in the thread has some better info on this topic. My current collection of 8 kilts has a variety of tartans, including a traditional Irish Saffron solid, the Irish National, Hunting McLeod, Gordon, Black Watch, Pride of Scotland (liked the colours), etc. I could wear the County Antrim Irish tartan as that's where my grandfather came from, but I don't like the colours in it. |
Posted by: Irish Stepper 11-Aug-2006, 12:01 PM
I got a mini-kilt that I wear to festivals and stuff. I love it! Who cares what the "rules" are. No one follows them anyway. I think it's an awesome idea to get matching kilts. Go for it! |
Posted by: Al G. 11-Aug-2006, 12:09 PM
MMmmmmmmmmmm...mini-kilts... What's good for the goose is good for the gander. |

I've been to Milwaukee's Irishfest for about five years now.Seen alot of strange things but if someone were to ask me if the lasses should wear kilts I would have to say GOOD GOD, YES!!! Believe me, for the guys they are just as sexy on the lasses (my own opinion) and they are for the guys for you lasses. There is another wonderful website for kilts if you cna't afford that high price right away. http://www.greatscotshop.com They have a payment plan were I believe you can pay around $60 a month after a $75 deposit? And they send the kilt as soon as it is finished. |

*is gobsmacked, contemplating the image* I've also heard that anyone can wear any tartan, but NancyRaven had a really nice experience contacting the present chieftain for permission to wear the Hunting MacLean tartan. It's considered especially courteous, and much appreciated. |
Posted by: Roberto Phoenix 14-Aug-2006, 04:25 PM |
That was really nice idea. I'm hoping to officially join a clan when I find out more about my ancestry even though I've had offers. Unfortunately the Italian tartan doesn't really have a clan chieftain right now and hmmm...wait a minute |

Sorry Ladies but I just ordered me new kilt and it won't be in for another 8 to 10 weeks. Considering the amount of time and hassle I put in to get it I would glady be a pictured side of beef for the ladies. Maybe we could do a Celtic radio kilt calendar? |

Posted by: stoirmeil 22-Aug-2006, 04:46 PM |
Nah, when he said boxers he meant these slobbery brown dogs. You can get them in different plaids if you call the right breeder. |
Posted by: sisterknight 22-Aug-2006, 04:58 PM |
aha, don't think so but then these days you never know what breeders can come up with!!!hehehe |

Alot of rennies throw a fox tail on the back of their belt. I guess they use to keep them nasty bity things cetered in one area back in those days. Of course it has other meaning today |

Posted by: Macfive 10-Sep-2006, 05:37 PM |
I noticed this topic popped up today when I wrote a script to grab all hot topics from the forum. I mean, this is really really a hot topic! At the suggestion of StevenPD we will be doing something for the soon first ever Hunk with a Kilt photo contest. There will probably be a place to upload photographs, vote, comment and rank em. |

Posted by: sisterknight 11-Sep-2006, 06:46 AM |
mad - what a lovely pic...all that was missing were the hounds!!!! |
Posted by: stoirmeil 11-Sep-2006, 08:08 AM |
You other lads should get your pix up -- Madadh is getting a long lead on you. That wedding picture is really grand. Did they play the pipes too? |
Posted by: dundee 11-Sep-2006, 08:34 AM |
aye...... i just sent mine (kilt) back... the "buchanan muted" about burned my eyes out what appeared to be lovely earth tones really lit up in person .... the deep mustard yellow jumped to nearly primary yellow... the deep burgundy red changed to bright red.... and earthy warm green to almost christmas green.... reordered in "brownwatch" and got a real in my hands swatch this time... much more my style... and lovely browns greens and blacks..... take a hint... dont order without a real swatch the computer does things... i tried several ways to get the same on the screen from the swatch from scanning to photo's nothing really worked... my pic will go up with the contest.... cause i aint going to look near as good as madadh. cheers |

Had a piper and all. The entire grooms party were kilted as well. Did not have any hounds due to a city ordance (they owned the property) |

Sorry for the wait, ladies. Here's a new one that my wife just shot this afternoon. I have a couple more shots of it, but you'll have to wait for the contest. The kilt is an Irish Saffron kilt from Stillwater Kilts. It's the first time I've worn it. Enjoy! |
Posted by: sisterknight 19-Sep-2006, 07:03 AM |
ooo yummy!!! the ride's not bad either!!!!! as for the contest aren't teasers always good to whet the choices we make latere?? |
Posted by: stoirmeil 19-Sep-2006, 07:52 AM |
That's quite striking, Al G.! So that's the saffron color. It does look very handsome with the black -- just as striking with the black velvet dress jacket, I imagine. You're an inspiration! |
Posted by: zeryx 19-Sep-2006, 09:16 AM |
Yummy looking good! ... very nice Al G. |
Posted by: Irish Stepper 22-Sep-2006, 02:15 AM |
Thanks Al G.! That is certainly enough to whet any appetite! I will be getting my fill of men in kilts this weekend at the Celtic Classic in Bethlehem. If only 10% of them look that good, then I'll be in heaven! |
