One lasting affect on me from our tour of Scotland in July, was the impression left by the Kirks and Chapels we visited.
On Skye, Iona, and other parts of Scotland we found so many beautiful buildings with stone walls, slate roofs, stained glass windows and worn timber pews. The atmosphere was fantastic.
I've come home and been more than ever dissappointed in the modern, bland buildings we call church halls here. I know we don't have the history to make such places possible, but I think that protestant churches have largely ignored the importance of creating such atmospheres in church in modern times.

I totally 100% agree with you!!!!! New church buildings here in Georgia tend to be metal buildings without even a pane of stained glass or sculpture to add any character to the building.
After seeing churches in England and Ireland, it makes me value even more the few older brick and stone churches that remain in the south. Our own church contemplated building a new Family Life Center on the location of our 1940's era church building and I spearheaded a campaign to prevent tearing down the one bit of history First Baptist has... best thing I ever did, sure pissed a lot of people off but our chapel still stands and the new Center is going to be built where a parking lot currently sits.

"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king..."
The pictures are awesome. I recall all of the churches that I visited in the Ireland, Scotland, and England where amazingly breathtaking. I belong to a church that has been standing for over 175 years. Although there have been many additionals from the original chapel, they have done a remarkable job at maintaining the appearance of the original architecture.
