Greetings from Des Moines, Iowa! Just returned to the town of my childhood (Des Moines) after living in Wyoming & Colorado for the past 25 years.
I am passionate about family history and living back here is giving me a chance to explore more of my Irish ancestors' migration to Iowa. Family names are: HANLON, O'CONNELL, BRADY, CLANCY & FINNEGAN. The Hanlons and Bradys came to New York, then to Waukesha, Wisconsin, (1859) on to someplace in Illinois moving to Anamosa, Iowa (1870) before my great-grandparents finally settled in Waukee, Iowa.
My favorite Irish band is SOLAS. They touch my soul.
I miss flyfishing in the mountains of Colorado. I had the great fortune to get "stuck" in Ireland for 3 weeks during the 9/11/2001 crisis. (I had been visiting my son in Prague, Czech Republic, where he was attending college). So I was able to do some flyfishing in Killarney. How beautiful!!!
Favorite Irish book: Nuala O'Faolain's 'My Dream of You'. I wish she would write some more novels.
Thing I hate about some of the Irish bars in Des Moines: they have NO CLUE how to pour a Guiness! I'm going to report them to the Motherland!
I tried learning the Irish Language when I lived in Denver but I just couldn't decipher all those sounds! I've got about 100 pages of family history written and I think your little irish quotes on each web page are just adorable! I might have to 'borrow' some to liven up the family history pages.

welcome back to the nice quiet fields of the Heartland Joan. Glad you joined us here. I'm not to terribly far from Waukesha, much closer to that than I am Des Moines anyway. Hope you enjoy browsing around here and getting to know the people.

Howdy from the Navajo Nation, Joan. Right there with you on SOLAS. They are great. We heard them a few weeks ago in Flagstaff.
