I just recently found some Spanish tutorial software I purchased years ago but never opened, so I just started learning Spanish. I suspect it's the European dialect because the speakers on the tutorial don't have the rapid fire, staccato meter of the Latin American dialect.

Currently i'm trying to learn Danish. book.gif I use rosettastone software which is pretty thorough and easy to pick up. I try to learn Gaelic but that is coming really slow. bored.gif

I bought some Italian software a while ago, I should start that up again. I'm thinking about taking some Spanish classes as well. I already know some of the basics (very little but still some).

Languages...I just love languages!!! smile.gif Always have. Besides of German which is my first language, I speak English and French, some Spanish and a bit Italian.
I'm learning Scottish Gaelic ( could turn out as a lifetime project! sad.gif ) and am collecting material about certain Native American languages...
I think I will not quit learning new ones as long as I will be able to do so. biggrin.gif

I speak Spanish and English. I am the only English speaker at home so I have to speak Spanish or be very frustrated. I took a year of ancient Greek in University long ago, but remember nothing of it, and I know about three words in Quiche which will serve me very well I suppose if I ever find myself in that area of Guatemala again.

I read Ancient Greek (in my 8th semester of it) and am currently taking a course to refresh my knowledge of Latin. In my spare time, I'm working on Ancient Egyptian, Irish, and Japanese.

I love languages and thinking about how different languages relate similar concepts. I've got a thing for old/"dead" languages, part of which is probably because I want to do my part to keep them alive for another generation. Granted, there are languages in more danger of dying out, but I can only learn what I can find materials to use in learning.

English, if couse, is my first language.

I'm Proud to call German a second language (which I'm trying not to lose)

I had a Spanish class in High School to get a foundation. I could probably pick it up again, but it's so weak right now that my skill with it might only server to get me into trouble.

Learning Gaelic. Arguably stronger now than my Spanish skills, but I'd still definately hesitate to attempt using it for a complete conversation

Had a 3 week intro to French a long time ago. Enough to decide I didn't like the feel of it. It's a fine language and all, I just don't care for how it feels

Studied a little bit of Tolkinian Elven. Not enough to say I was studying Quenya vs. Sindarin. I'm somewhat familiar with Tengwar. but I have no vocabulary.

I speak of course german which is my first language and of course english.

I used to speak french pretty well but lost that after so many years not speaking it.

Now I am trying to learn scottish gaelic but I don't seem to get the knack of it. tongue.gif

But I am not giving in so quick.

English (1st language), Spanish to some degree, French to some lesser degree, Lakhota (Native American-Sioux), and I wish I had the time for Scottish Gaelic. I have the "Teach Yourself" tapes for that.....

English. Had four years of Spanish, but it's slipping away rapidly. Have been learning Welsh now for a few weeks, and that is going well.

At one time or another I've learned and largely forgotten Vietnamese, French, and Spanish. I also learned enough Japanese to get by while I was in Japan--I can still translate a phrase or so for my kids when they watch Anime. At one time, I could also recognize Russian and Mandarin Chinese, but can't say I ever felt comfortable with them--mostly, all I really learned in them was comm checks. I once tried to learn German, but decided it was more than I could handle. My Swedish grandmother tried to teach me a bit of Swedish, but I can't say I remember any of it now.
I'm thinking of making a stab at learning some Gaellic.

English is the only language I speak fluently. I had two years of high school Spanish (and am really surprised at how much of it I remember). I am also learning Scottish Gaelic. I've been learning it now for about 6 or 7 years, and have not progressed much farther than advanced beginner or low intermediate level! sad.gif If I ever master it, I'd also like to learn Irish Gaelic, Russian, and Hebrew, as well as master Spanish! Maybe someday...

I took 4 years of French in high school and remember some of it! Possibly enough to get me by, but...

I was thinking of buying some tapes (or CD's) to learn Gaelic, but I'm not sure what a good program would be. Does anyone have any recommendations for a company who makes Language on Tapes? I spend about 2 1/2 hours a day in my car, so might as well put it to use! biggrin.gif

Which Gaelic? Irish, Scottish or Manx? I am assuming, since you are IRISH Stepper, that you mean Irish Gaelic, which I can't help you with, but I just thought I'd ask... wink.gif

I speak English fluently and have taken four years of high school French and am minoring in French in college. So hopefully by the time I'm out of college I'll be fluent in French as well.

I speak Southern and know some English. tongue.gif Studied Spanish in high school and lived in Colombia (Bucaramanga) for a while, but haven't spoken it in over thirty years and don't remember much. Took Russian in college, but remember even less.

Swedish, Scottish Gaelic, English, German, French, Latin, Norwegian, Irish Gaelic(not very good though) Danish, Some Japanes, Chinese Faroese...

Posted by: stoirmeil 08-Sep-2005, 09:57 AM
Wow! That's really something, Eiric. I guess you've been around. smile.gif

I'm a native English speaker. I have some French (usually better than I think it will be, when I try to speak, and I read it for research purposes), and somewhat better German. I am fluent in Yiddish, which I began learning as an adult in my 30s (so it CAN be done, people!) and taught it for a number of years. Presently learning Scots Gaidhlig. I too have a thing for both of my "endangered languages" and the poetry, music and culture that rides on them. I have been thinking that when the Gaidhlig is more solid, I will try to pick up some Breton, which is actually in my heritage (I like to pretend I am descended from Asterix, or someone like him. biggrin.gif )

I'm currently learning French and Irish, and I have taken some Spanish to know a few basic terms...

Posted by: Nightchild 19-Nov-2005, 12:51 PM
My native language is German.
I've learned English for 9 years in school, which I finished almost 6 years ago. Since that time all my practice in English is the internet.
For 7 years I've learned French in school and had one of my exams in it. After school I unfortunately had no chance to speak it and rare chances to write French, also in some kinds of chat rooms.
Back in school I tried to learn Italian on my own from a book my grandma used to learn it. She couldn't help me with it, since I never met her, unfortunately... All that's left is the ability to realise it's Italian when someone uses it and to know the meaning of about every 10th to 100th word.
I understand Spanish as much as I need to understand what Ricky Martin is singing in the newer songs, not the english ones though. wink.gif And understanding means to know what he's singing about rather than being able to translate it acurately. I know some words though as cow, but I don't know how to write it, so I don't. smile.gif
I'd love to learn scotish gaelic. I've advanced as to understand some of its weird gramatical constructs and to know the pronounciation of some weird combinations of letters as bh and fh and so on. But I don't understand any of it since I don't know the meanings of the words. I love to sing it, though, which probably sounds pretty strange to someone who is able to speak it. But then again, maybe that way I'll someday find someone to teach me. *g*
I'd also love to learn chinese and japanese. But I guess that'll always remain some kind of dream...

Swedish
English
German
French
Gàidhlig
Norwegian
some Faroese and Danish, I understand written Italian and Icelandic but I cannot speak them, and since I love alphabeths I can write Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Tibetan..

Seriously, look into a job with the government as a translator - you'll be hired in a heartbeat!

Posted by: Eiric 30-Nov-2005, 03:35 AM
Wow! Yiddish! Stoirmeil, that's so cool! And yes, I loooooooove languages!

Posted by: kiltedlover69 18-Jan-2006, 12:29 PM
American Sign language (ASL)

Posted by: Maddie 18-Jan-2006, 04:01 PM
really? I know a lady in Canada who learnt it and also is learning Gàidhlig.

I speak English, and a Chinese Dialect fluently, I can speak Latin, read Greek, speak some Spanish, French, and Italian.

Posted by: Siarls 23-Feb-2006, 06:10 PM
English is my first language but I speak Welsh to a native standard and consider it my native language.
I speak French, Spanish and Italian as well (once you've learned one Romance language, it becomes fairly easy to pick the rest up). I can understand Latin, Catalan, Galician and Portuguese, but can't speak or write them.

I can read and write the Russian and Greek alphabets, but can't speak Russian or Greek!

I can pick up some Cornish and Breton because of the Welsh.

I would absolutely adore to speak Irish and Scottish Gaelic. I think they are SOOOOOOO beautiful, but although already having a Celtic language, it is no easier to pick up Irish or Gaelic. The Celtic languages don't quite work the same way as the Romance languages!

I find Germanic and Slavic languages to be quite aggressive, so I avoid them, but I would like to learn Norwegian I think because one of my closest friends is Norwegian and it sings really nicely!

I'd love to learn Catalan fluently because I think Catalonia is amazing. YAY Catalan Nationhood! Officially recognised as a nation, though not quite independent from Spain yet.

I am useless at anything else... only languages can I do. (Welshism there). Maths, Science - useless! Can barely use a computer! I ABSOLUTELY ADORE LANGUAGE! I hope to do a PhD in Linguistics.

I speak Japanese as my first language and English almost fluently. I'm learning Welsh and hope I will be almost fluent someday.

I'm not a liguist like Siarls and Eiric and many others, so I don't think I'll be learning any other languages. I've learned English out of necessity and I'm learning Welsh out of love for Wales. If the Welsh spoke Hebrew, I'm sure I'd be learning it!
