I am seeking information regarding the various history of migration to Ireland and maybe years of migration. We, my husband and I, have ancestors who migrated to Ireland and some who went back and forth.

Thank you for any assistance.

Hello mdeanm,

First, thanks for being a member of Celtic Radio for so long! Much appreciated.

Have you tried doing your Ancestry DNA through Ancestry.com. We did ours this year and amazed with the location of our ancesters. Might be a good starting point.

CelticRadio: Thank you for the response to my inquiry.
I have been research my linage for a number of years, with some lines back to the 1100s and others not as far but have a good ideas where most of the family originated. My husband has a family went from Scotland to Ireland often with family members being born in both countries. My Mackay [Mackey] family left Ireland prior to 1767 but have been unable to find information as to what was happening in Scotland which may have encouraged the family to emigrate to Ireland from the Highlands.

I have thought about the DNA testing but since I have a good idea where the family comes from, I'm not ready at this time.

Thank you again for responding to my inquiry.

Your very welcome, sounds like you have done alot of research already on your family history. That is awesome it is amazing the things you can discover.

I think years ago, and talking more like 50+ years family histories were passed down more verbally from generation to generation. If someone wrote it down then at least today we have it. But you figure 50+ years ago no internet or email or social media. Our social media were family gatherings where we engage in things such as eating hot dogs and home cooked baked beans. Aunts would bring the potatoe salad and uncles their stories of winter storms and hunting trips.

Our grandmother who was born around the turn of the century always claimed we had Native American ancestry although no one knew for sure if she was right or not as they could not figure out where it came from. Although a clue from my father was that when he was young they would visit a reservation in Maine.

Sure enough, the Ancestry DNA testing shows a small % of Native American. I think the Ancestry DNA is well worth it, if you wait until it goes on sale it is only $49.95 and there is a ton of information in the App that they keep updating and linking new family members that come online. Just remember if you order before Christmas it does take several months to get the results, atleast for us as they must sell alot of kits around that time.
