Karen Ashbrook has been involved with dulcimer since the mid 70s when she built her first one as a high school project. She had been a pioneer in the promotion of the dulcimer in the US, Japan and more recently in its revival in Belgium. As KA/PO Karen performers with her husband, Paul Oorts, a Belgian-born musician who performs on harp guitar, 10-string cittern, mandolin, and musette accordion.
About the new CD "Celtic Shores - beautiful airs & lullabies for dreaming.”: The calming sound of the ocean waves is the heart and soul of the airs from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Isle of Man (Manx), Brittany in France, and Galicia in Spain – the 7 Celtic nations. Karen Ashbrook, a world-renowned performer of 40+ years on the hammered dulcimer, gently brings this music to life. Celtic Duo Seán Heely and Kevin Elam have been praised for their beautiful traditional arrangements and expressive playing as well as having an authentic sound in many different styles. Fiddle legend Liz Carroll calls Seán “One powerhouse of a fiddler.” He is a U.S National Scottish Fiddle Champion as well as an award-winning Irish Fiddler and singer in the folk traditions of Scotland and Ireland.
Kevin Elam is the 2019 All-Ireland Men’s Singing Champion and an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist in the Washington D.C area.
Kevin performs on guitar, tenor banjo, whistle, and sings in the Seán Heely Celtic Trio and with Seán in their Celtic Duo. Kevin is also a classically trained pianist and holds a degree in Jazz from George Mason University, and performs regularly as a solo pianist and as a keyboardist. Seán and Kevin have performed together at venues such as the Kennedy Center, Strathmore music center, All-Ireland fleadh, Acadia Trad Festival, CCE Irish Folk Festival in Fairfax, VA, and the Virginia Scottish Games.
Two sisters is composed of two actual sisters, Guen and Liz Spilsbury, who have been singing together since the age they could carry a tune. Born to musical parents, they were introduced to both classical and folk music at a young age and fell in love with both. Named for the traditional Two Sisters song, they specialize in long and grisly murder ballads, but sing everything from classical art songs and madrigals to work songs and bawdy ballads, blending their voices in unique harmony. They have sung in many ensembles in the area, including the Washington Revels, Riverbend opera, Six Degree singers, and Victorian lyric Opera Company. No siblings were harmed in the making of this duo. |

Alan Reid was a vital member of Scotland's legendary Battlefield Band for 40 years, recording almost 30 albums, winning awards and touring all over the world. In addition to his signature keyboard work he has forged a reputation for composing songs with beguiling melodies and strong historical content. Alan has continued developing his song writing in his partnership with Dutch born Rob van Sante who adds subtle guitar accompaniments and fine harmony singing. Rob and Alan connected while the former was Battlefield Band’s sound engineer. Scythian hosts the annual Appaloosa Music Festival in Front Royal, VA every Labor Day weekend -- 2 days and 3 nights featuring dozens of groups and performers with an emphasis on Celtic, bluegrass, roots and even salsa music...and non-stop partying. It's a very family-friendly gathering of thousands.
Washington DC-based Scythian (sith-ee-yin) began over 12 years ago as a bunch of college buddies playing Celtic music in the streets and has grown to be a headliner on the US Celtic Festival Circuit as well as a name in the Bluegrass/Americana Festival Circuit. They found that their brand of high-energy folk music found a resonance that led The Washington Post to state: “Scythian’s enthusiasm is contagious, and shows seem to end with everyone dancing, jumping around or hoisting glasses.”
For over 12 years they have found success as an independent band and have played over 1,300 shows all over the united states, Europe, Canada and as far aways as Australia.
Founded by brothers Alexander and Danylo Fedoryka who are first-generation sons of Ukrainian immigrants, Scythian from the start has been a search and love for the "old time, good time music" of many cultures. They were inspired by a tale told by their 92-year-old grandmother of a roving fiddler who came into her farming village every six months or so. Once he was spotted, messengers were sent to all the outlying fields and mills and worked ceased; everyone gathered in the barn where they danced all night and danced their cares away. This spirit is what has motivated Scythian from its inception and their success as an independent band is due largely to their finding a resonance of soul amongst kindred spirits that span all ages and races. This spirit took them from the streets to playing for the US president on St. Patrick's Day and its the enthusiastic response they receive that has made each of their 1,300+ shows unique.
THE calling card of Scythian is their ability to engage their audience no matter the venue or circumstance and truly every Scythian shows ends with people dancing, smiling and covered with sweat. This is best summed up by The Camel-City Dispatch (Winston-Salem, North Carolina): “[Scythian gives] no quarter in their quest to entertain and bring a joy to their music that gives it an irony-free, wide open feel of manic possibility. The playing is technically brilliant, but it is the energy that carries the day."

On Sunday, 2/3, Charlie Zahm offers a musical tribute to the Scots' Jacobite Rebellion (reference - the Outlander series) and Robert Burns' birthday at the Trad Concerts of Celtic Music at the Old Brogue Irish Pub, 760-C Walker Rd., Great Falls, VA 22066. I just found this Celtic Radio site but I've been a fan of everything Irish all my life. For years, I assumed that I must have Ireland in my background somewhere, but a recent DNS test says my ancestors came from Scotland and Northern England. Harrumph!
Don't get me wrong, I do like the folk music of Scotland and, yes, even England, but Irish music is always at the top of my list. I have over 5,000 CDs in my collection and while it covers the gamut of folk, blues, bluegrass, classic rock and even a little jazz and classical, a huge amount of it is from Ireland.
I'm a member of the World Folk Music Association (WFMA) which has given me the chance to meet and greet so many folk singers and performers -- including Tommy Makem (a highlight). |
