MacAlpine

Does anyone have any info on my clan, please ?

I do have stuff but it would be interesting to see the more 'professional' approach used on this forum so far by Macfive etc.

According to Electric Scotland there is not much history of the Clan MacAlpine. They are decended from Kenneth MacAlpine the first King of Scotland, but then I'm sure you know that.There was a MacAlpine who fought for Prince Charlie and was married to a MacGregor. They escaped to North Carolina after the Rebellion. If you can give me a week I will dig through all that I have on the Clans and see what I can find.

Yes, I think everyone knows the 'Kenneth' connection but your second remark is of interest to me, ref McAlpine / McGregor / Charlie. It would be great to see a McAlpine alongside Tearlach.

The McGregors often called themselves Clan Alpine. Rob Roy was Captain of Clan Alpine and another McGregor was installed as High Chief ( calling himself McAlpine ) around 1708.

The McGregor slogan - my race is royal - hints at the close family origins. The Siol Alpine confederacy all claim decendency from the same stock, but the McGregors may be the key to a lot of what is missing. Although the McAlpine lineage ruled Scotland for 200 years until MacBeth, they lost their immense power, lands and political sway somehow in the years that followed. They may have hidden amongst their McGregor kith and kin. What may confuse the issue is the reverse - McGregors taking on the name McAlpine and Campbell when their clan was Proscribed outlaws.

A side issue is the McAlpine Ancient tartan contains the black and gold of Campbell in the sett, is this an indication of close relationships other than McGregor?

I have noticed a large number of McAlpines did get to the States and on a visit to the Carolinas, I came across the McAlpine River and McAlpine High School.

I have done some fast checking on MacAlpin(e) and haven't come up with much. Do not despair as I will keep looking and dig out my "Skene" that is if my youngest daughter dosen't have it. If she does "I'll skelp the wee bugger. " Actually she is a 32 year old woman and you don't want to mess with her. I'll get back to you soon.

I have done some checking in reference to the sett of the tartan and what I found is that one MacAlpin tartan does carry the black and gold plus blue as does the Campbell. Another MacAlpin carries the identical black, green and gold of the MacArthurs. As all three of these families were in Argyll around Loch Awe it is quiet possible that at some point they were intermixed. Up until James 1st returned from imprisonment in England the Clan MacArthur was the power in Argyll and after their fall the Campbells took the lead. Since there is no record of the MacAlpin chiefs ever holding land or title at the time they could well have sought protection under either or both these Clans hence the similarities in tartans.
