Beginner's Scots Gaelic

I know there is a Learning Scots Gaelic in the Scotland Forum. But I know it has gotten fairly advanced. And Maybe we should have it moved here? But until that time happens or is wanted lets start here!

Thanks for starting these topics, Barddas. I've been out updating some of my resources to include scottish gaelic and manx gaelic. And starting every week I'll post a word list, and also find some fun things like scottish crossword puzzles with the weekly word list or something. I'll keep it fun. For now, here are some "Good to know" Scottish phrases.

"Dè an t-ainm a tha oirbh?" (Jeh un TAH-num uh HAW-ruv?) What's your name?

"'S mise.....(insert your name)." (SMIH-shuh...) "My name is..."

"Ciamar a tha sibh?" (KIM-mer uh HAH shiv?) "How are you?"

"Tha gu math, tapadh leibh." (HAH guh MAH, TAH-puh LEH-eev) "I'm well, thank you."

"Dè tha thu a dèanamh?" (Jeh HAH oo uh JEE-ah-nuv?) "What are you doing?"

"Chan eil mi a' dèanamh càil." (chahn-yel mee uh JEE-ah-nuv KAHL) "I'm not doing anything."

"An toir thu dhomh pòg?" (Un TUH-r oo ghawnh pawk?) "Will you give me a kiss?"

"Cha toir, ach bheir mi dhut sgailc!" (Chah TUH-r, ach vehr mee ghoot skahlk!) "No, but I'll slap you!"

"Mar sin leibh an dràsda." (mahr shin LEH-eev un DRAHSS-tuh) "Ta ta for now."

and with that... Mar sin Leibh an dràsda!

The other Scots Gaelic thread started off as a beginners thread and like barrdas said, it got pretty advanced, so I thought I would move some of the very beginner's stuff over here. Hope that is okay, barrdas!

Thanks for posting these phrases up... I just rebuild my computer so I am without my normal resources right now, so me putting up the Scottish weekly lesson is going to be delayed till I get into work and get my links sent to my "new" computer. So... I hope these tide everyone over till tomorrow afternoon or so. I also have some vocab links and such.... wow. I am turning into a teacher.

Another stab at learning too Your Gaelic is probably better than mine, CR Hopefully we can change that. though I would like to get my Gaelic at least to the level of my German.

Aaediwen, I don't know how much Scots Gaelic you can speak or write, but I know mine is very very limited! The folks on the other thread went to fast for me and besides, I just didn't study like I should have, so mostly it is my fault! So will be anxious to see what Danann has in store for us! Yippee!

Aye, as is mine. Very poor. Maybe this thread should be used to discuss problems, and address questions about scots gaelic. Then start an other thread that is actually lessons,and examples.
This way it keeps the information together, and searching for one particular item is easy if it is not buggered up.
Just athought...
Basically this thread will be used as a 'homework' or 'scratch pad'....

That sounds good to me. I started a Scottish Gaelic Lesson with greetings and goodbyes... I forgot to put lesson one by it, but yeah, we can use that thread as the lesson thread and this one as a question and answer thread.
