PIANIST LAURA MCMILLAN HAS A DISTINCTIVE STYLE It is not easy for a solo pianist to find their own voice but Laura McMillan has a fairly distinctive playing style. On her new album LINGER LONGER she proves to be a master of tempo changes as she moves from slow, stately progressions to rapid runs, fast-paced melodies and occasional forceful chording, often within a single piece. It is worth giving a listen to this classically-trained pianist and composer because the way she writes and the way she plays is just a bit different than most of the contemporary solo pianists out there. As she flits over here and then soars over there, she sounds like she is having fun, and it is infectious. The music is, as most solo piano is, fairly soothing and contemplative, but she moves around enough to keep it interesting, and that alone puts the music in the smaller category of “listening music.” |
